This song brings back the memory of sitting in the end of year exam at high school and someone at the back, in the heavy silence and concentration that goes with a big exam, says loudly ''Now let me get this straight, you put the lime in the coconut...'' and the whole exam had to be postponed because we were practically inconsolable.
OMG .....my wife had an upset stomach all night, so we went to the grocery store today, and she bought limes and coconuts.....and I almost lost it in the grocery store.....in Brazil, she had never hear this song before but I was rolling in the aisles.......
This song never gets old and always makes me laugh. I was just diagnosed with crohns and couldn't get this song out of my head. Maybe I need to eat more coconuts.
I remember, I heard this song, after decades of not hearing it, on the radio, and I kept singing it, and my little sister asked me what I was singing. I told her and she accused me of making the song up, that there couldn't possibly be a song like that, and I said, I swear, it was a popular song in 1970 or 71, and she still didn't believe me. Years later, I was driving to my mom's house, and just as I pulled into the driveway, the song came on on the radio, so, I called her up on my cellphone and told her that song was on this specific radio station and to turn on her radio at work so she could listen to it. She just happened to be driving around due to some work related appointments and she said she was listening to it, and she laughed her head off at how silly it was. She also accused me of making up Barbara Mandrell's, "You Can Eat Crackers in My Bed", too, UNTIL she heard it!! LOL!!
Fun fact. Due to a clerical error within the gov't this song was Canada's official national anthem for 3 weeks in August 1974 until, oddly enough, the mixup was spotted by actor Pat John who played Jessie on The Beachcombers.
I first heard this song on the ending credits of Reservoir Dogs. That moment when the camera just pans up from Harvey Keitel to the ceiling with sounds of gunshots being fired and the ambiguity of who shot who still reeling in the mind and then this just comes on as the credits roll. What a moment.
Same! 😂 I was hooked! I heard the song somewhere one time so I kinda knew it but after reservoir dogs I had to finally look it up. Such a silly song. I'm convinced of this remedy if they're willing to make a song for it.. I'll definitely have to try it next time I get a tummy ache.
Lance and Nigel were my favorite characters in bones. (Also Finn and Wendall) I bawled my eyes out. We're rewatching the show. We had just seen the episode where Lance passes, so sad. Listening to this makes me feel better. 😢
Nothing sexier than watching korean street foods on facebook and seeing a truck full of coconuts and people pealing them to make some good health drinks combined with this song!
So nice... I was ten years old listening to my am radio basking in the morning sun on a fishing dock fishing for anything that would bite on the Willamette river and this song came played at least 3 times on this station I listened too!! Memories, probably I'd say some of the best times of my life! Not a care in the world!! "Doctor relieve my belly ache."....
I'm surprised no one has mentioned Practical Magic when Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman are in the kitchen dancing. ICONIC MOMENT IF YA TELL ME. That movie is why I became obsessed with this song!
Back then song lyrics were not available easy and so I thought for years he sang "put the LION in the coconut" and yes I was wondering about the meaning xD
The time has come! My Great niece is coming up on 1&1/2 years old and I must make it my mission to familiarize her with this uplifting song. Great memories with me and my three sisters!!
This is absolute production and songwriting GENIUS. I love how it pulls on the time and feels like it is about to go flying off the track, such beautiful subtle manipulation of time, dynamics, very slight phrase adjustments (sometimes called phasing), mind melting harmonies, and off such a simple little riff. Brilliant.
I was in an accident and was headed back to emergency surgery. I said “I think I’m ok, I’m just kinda scared”. Anesthesia, surgeons, techs, nurses started singing this to me as my meds kicked in while they were pushing me down the hall. Turns out I was kicking the bucket. The team saved my life with a sense of humor. Shout out to St. Luke’s in KC.
Such a cool and funny song! Love to play this song if my son is playing on his Xbox!!! It makes him giggle and then he would lose the battle he and friends played all night to win!! 😂😂😂 Work every time 😂😂😂😂😂
Fortunately, this is not a song I have gotten stuck in my head as I tend to do without trying, although back in the day it was played a lot on the radio and I haven't heard it since, at least not on the radio, until last week and NOW it is in my head for sure. Who knows for how long? Never realized just how brilliant, wacky, circular and, to a degree, hypnotic it was until the last week or so. What a fun song. It needs to be brought back into popularity somehow for the world to hear. Wonder if Harry ever did this one live?
I love this song. I was 12 and there were so many weird songs (My Dingaling, Bertha Butt, Disco Duck etc around these years, ugh!) but this one is perfect in its nonsense! Just makes you smile and want to dance!
Discovered this song when I crashed at my brothers dorm in university, we just had some *regular* brownies and after hearing this song I couldn't stop laughing. I will now play this for similar occasions in the foreseeable future.

Harry was a creative genius. I wonder if he was inspired by "Bolero" in this song. It builds and builds on the same theme to a climax.
