  • Here's a quick preview of the ByteDelight gamepad, the prototype.
This is the smallest version, there might be bigger ones.
It's Atari compatible for any ZX Spectrum joystick interface (except SJS ports), or other machines with compatible joystick port.
It has a 'twist in' stick option, so it's almost a joystick.. or is it already?
Let me know what you think!

    Excellent !
I really like this version which seems to hold well in the hand.
The removable handle option is a great idea !

Got a couple of recommendations that would probably make it an overall better gamepad:
    - a switch to alternate between ATARI and SJS.
    - a normal button and a turbo button, with a switch to alternate the turbo function between both buttons, so we can choose which one is the autofire.
I picked up a few black chinese NES gamepad knockoffs with this goal in mind, but I haven't had the time to try to modify one.

Cool! I especially like the removable stick; it's a great idea.
I'm also playing with custom controllers, still only trying and prototyping :). One day maybe I'll create a good one :)
I made a prototype only with small micro-switches (pushbuttons) closely tight to a d-pad in U shape just for thumb + buttons on the right side. I was surprised how it was useable for some games (for example playing Exolon was easier than with joystick),
For the second prototype I made, I used Cherry Mx Red switches + keycaps. It worked good, but not a perfect experience. And It feels like an expensive keyboard. For some games it was good.
The third controller I made, was a modification of a NES-clone controller. (original D-pad + microswitches for fire and second button). Again, It was great for some games (perfect for Splitting Images), but not for every game.
For some games, classical Joystick was the best (Jetpac)
Conclusion: It will be hard to make a great controller good (at least good) for every game.
One thing I found useful was to add an extra button for "up" next to the "fire". It's great for platformers (Manic Miner and so on), because "up"+"left"/"right" with a d-pad isn't always precise enough. Hmmm... Hm! I just got an idea: left side: "left"/"right"; right side: "up"/"down"; and two triggers, both for "fire". No d-pad, no stick.

My Gravis Gamepad had the same trick: I could remove the little stick from the D-pad. Of course I lost the stick over time .....

it would be nice to see how it sits in the hand when you hold it. maybe a little bit more rounded corners? It looks like the right size to use the joystick with 2 (thumb and pointing) fingers. Question: with 2 fire buttons, will it work like extended kempston?

Make the detachable stick Spectravideo SV-318 compatible and you'll have two markets ;)
