    Such a casual fun interview and everyone is taking it so seriously. I highly doubt bubba hurt anyone’s feelings with his comments. Phil himself admits he never took care of himself and finally getting into to shape is what allowed him to remain competitive

      Commenters are bringing more than Bubba said into this as is typical. And while I’m thoroughly excited for Phil and was cheering him on at the pga everyone is singing an awful different tune than 4 weeks ago after Phil missed the cut at the masters. Which again, still isn’t something Bubba ever talked about.

      Yeah. "They're just robots." As if anyone could just "beat balls" and become a multi-major champion. Athleticism also does not mean being in peak shape. Any PGA player has incredible hand-eye coordination and body control.

    You ever think about what its like to be these guys and get asked questions about your coworkers constantly. Knowing your answers would be broadcast to the world and now you have to go back and work with these guys. They literally ask them stuff like whose the laziest of your coworkers, whose got a bad body, whose overrated, whose bending the rules.

    I've played golf, baseball, swimming, tennis etc in competitive setups and i wouldn't think golf is "sport" per se (at least everyone in the room will look down on golf in that regard) that said it doesn't really matter to me anyway -- because we have things like "e-sports" that's generating some ridiculous cash & excitement in the whole world today (especially the e-sports viewership has surpassed some of the biggest "real" sports already) I expect that we'll eventually stop fighting over "XXX is sport or not" sort of discussion as it gets less and less important for anyone

    The best athlete on tour in any era was gary Player.
    In the last 25 years it would be hands down Tiger, who started this fitness craze when he just steam rolled over everybody when he came on tour.
    In today's game, Kopka and Dustin are tied imo.
    The worst physical specimen on tour today is Kevin Stadler. 5'10" 250 lbs.

      To me an athlete is someone with natural hand-eye coordination that can quickly pick up any sport. Being in good physical shape is a small part of it.

    Many people forget that Jack Nicklaus was a tubby, unathletic potato at the beginning of his career. He then transformed his body and became a legend. Golf takes a lot more speed, agility, and stamina than most casual fans think.

      "unathletic potato?" Nicklaus attended Upper Arlington High School, whose nickname and mascot are coincidentally the Golden Bears. In his senior year, Nicklaus was an honorable mention All-Ohio selection in basketball as a shooting guard, and he received some recruiting interest from college basketball programs, including Ohio State. During his youth, he also competed successfully in football, baseball, tennis, and track and field. Chegas, learn to know what you are talking about before you put forth your beliefs.

    Anyone who has seen a PGA event live can tell you that golfers look like a bunch of accountants. There are exceptions , but pro golfers dont look like athletes. Of course, try playing the game yourself and learn how hard it is to play well.

      I don't completely agree, I think in the old days that was true but the game has changed so much. Across the pga, almost all of the pros are in better than average shape physically. I think some of them are more naturally athletic than others, but in order to compete at the highest level these days you have to be in pretty good shape. Look at Phil for example, he's one of the most naturally talented guys out there, but he wasn't able to keep up with the younger guys anymore. So he spent the last 2 years losing a bunch of weight and going to the gym and now he's back to winning again.

It doesn't really take a lot of athletic ability to play. Physical fitness helps but is not a requirement. You clearly have never played a real sport.

      Yes they are. Sure, golfers are not as big as basketball and football players but the golf swing requires the use of many different muscle groups in a perfect sequence. The top pros today are in unbelievable shape.

      Golf absolutely has athleticism involved specially with driver. And now with trackman as training tools. People are dialing in more and more their swing.
