The new Nike Pegasus Trail 3 is a slight and expected update to one of my favorite door-to-trail shoes from last year, the Pegasus Trail 2. Sporting a redesigned upper (nice!) and the same React midsole (double nice!) the Pegasus Trail 3 does a lot for comfortable long runs while still suffering some of the same issues as the previous version. What do you think?

The new Nike Pegasus Trail 3 is a subtle and welcome update to last year's model (which made my Gear of The Year list). But there's still some carry over issues that need addressing. Also, does anyone else have the lacing issues that I do??
No lacing issues for me. Might be the most comfortable shoe I’ve ever worn. Loving it so far. And it was on sale at the end of June for $99. Sick deal.
I'd really like to try this shoe but with the grip issues that everyone is complaining about it's a total no go for me living in Cape Town. Thanks for the great and honest review
Just got them 2 weeks ago. I love them! Very, very comfortable and the reaction from the foam is very noticeable! And yeah! Laces are definitely too short! Good call, there...
I’ve done hundreds of miles in two pairs of v2 and absolutely love them. I live in Scotland which is not a dry country and don’t have any major complaints about the levels of grip offered. Yes, the shoes isn’t one for heading into the mountains but overall it’s a good shoe for day to day trails.
So far I’ve liked it but you’ve nailed it about the grip. First little rainfall and I was struggling, not so much on the uphill but down hills were a nightmare. With a 100 miler coming up in September and good potential for wet weather I’m not sure I can trust this shoe as much as I’d like. Had been running in Speedcross 5 and grip was never an issue.
Speedcross and this shoe are incomparable. Totally different in every way. I own both but use this one so much more just because of how extreme and specific speedcross is for mud and mountains only. This one good for dirt roads and mild trails where most trail runners train most of the time.
I just ordered these yesterday in the blue/back/gray colorway and they just shipped this afternoon! They were on sale at Dick's Sporting Goods and I had $35 in rewards on my Dick's scorecard, so I got them for a steal! I cannot wait to get my hands on these!
Yes!!! Ethan thank you I thought I was going crazy with the lace lengths 😂
I hated the drop and lack of grip of version 2, if was vibram and 6mm……now that’s a beautiful dream
Great video. I've just ordered a pair. I live in a dry area so the sole grip should be fine for me.
I've been using this shoes more than 8 months and it has excellent grip on grass, on road and trail but slippery on wet floors.
One thing to remember about the outsole is that the pegasus trial was meant to be able to travel on the road to the trail. so you should be comfortable running on the road on your way to the trail, so they have to design their lugs in a particular fashion to accommodate road running also.
I certainly recommend them as such (and use them primarily for that purpose) but there are so many examples of shoes that can achieve the same effect while simultaneously using an outsole compound that doesn’t suck at both 🤷
@@TheGingerRunner 🤣🤣🤣good point
I ordered a pair of these a few days ago and paid $ 65.00 because of a discount I got on the Nike site. I've been wearing the Peg's since # 1 and the last works for me. Looking forward to wearing it on the non-technical trails in my area.
Was waiting for this one! Can confirm that my left lace is shorter... wanna try the heel lock lacing, but honestly don't know if I'll have enough lace to do that and double knot. Bought em for Leadville, hope they treat me well!
I've switched to lock laces on these !
I just bought them and they’re great!
Dope review man. I’ve been wanting some Pegasus shoes again but I dislike how narrow the newer ones have been over the past few years. I was thinking about getting these just as normal trainers on the road since they have a wider platform as you mentioned. Do you think I’d have any issues with running on the road with these?
Believe me from a none pay off that runs 5 miles 5 times a week the grip is awesome, There worth every penny.
I own the GTX version and they rule! They are a little slippery in the rain but I like hitting a rock with my head time to time!
Got the shoes. Same colorway. Checked the laces. Same length. I like the look of the Trial 2 better, but still a great shoe.
These shoes are HEAVY! I use them for training only (easy and interval runs, and sometimes tempo). For long runs, I use my lighter Saucony Freedom shoes.
Yes the problem with the laces is valid for me too! And i always thought that my left foot was wider than my right one. :)
How bizzarre that your left lace is shorter than your right lace. Great review!
You know what's interesting??? I tried on the pegasus 38, and the guy at the running shop thought my left foot was a little swollen, which could've been why I couldn't tie the shoe as well. I thought it was the laces. So I'm glad someone thought the same way as I did.
The lockdown on the Peg Trail 2 is such a pain. nevertheless, I am digging the update they've brought to the table. Will stick around for the Peg Trail 4 to solve the slip n slide vibes. Ps. My laces on the Peg Trail 2 are the same length.
Still looking for something that competes against the Kiger 5 on faster paced runs. Bought the Wildcross but couldn’t put my finger on it until recently after switching back to the Kiger 5. The grip on the Wildcross offers confidence to push-on when conditions are not ideal but sustaining a fast pace is more difficult than the Kiger 5 when conditions are okay. I wouldn’t trade the shorter laces, a shorter tongue, poor grip or the stability issues of the Kiger 5 for something that doesn’t move as quick. I also wouldn’t trade the grip and shape of the forefoot on the Wildcross. I was hoping the Pegasus Trail 3 might’ve been Goldilocks!
I wonder how this shoe stacks up to the Casper Latex Memory Foam Mattress. Could be an interesting comparison
The shoes are cool. I love the feel that Nike puts into their soles. To me that’s a major likability for a shoe. Comfort!!
Awesome review. Agree the laces are WAY too short. I have a high instep and almost struggle to get the shoes laced up. Combined with a tightly secured sewn in tongue make these running shoes the most uncomfortable pair of shoes I’ve ever owned. 3 runs and I’m about to take to them with a box cutter to see if I can free up some room in the top. I’ve been a Nike guy ever since my teens ( I’m now in my 50’s) but these shoes are extremely disappointing and have tempted me to try another brand for the first time in 4 decades. Any recommendations appreciated.
I love the Pegasus Trail 2, I bought 3 pairs! lol
Sweet shirt and runner colour match Ethan... Stylin...
I love it last year... Super cushy and nice ride... But like you said the grip and stability are questionable... This year... For less money... Brooks Cascadia 16 completely outperform this...
Went out in these today a paranoid wreck the way people have talked about the outsole but they were absolutely fine in 16 miles of wet Scottish trails. The Wildhorse 7 are for sure a bit dodgy in the wet but found these had more than enough grip for my routes anyway
Hi - thanks for the comment. Quick question: how stable is the heel support round the back and sides? Issue I had with Adidas Terrex Speed Pro was the ankle rolling too easily on roots, cambers. (Oh and they split on the sole after about 150mi - same place both shoes)
Me too!!
But I had broken the sole in on roads.
I think that is key because they were very grippy even in the wet!
My laces are different lengths on the Wild Horse 7, also shorter on the left foot
Speaking of being patient: Please review the Kinvara 12
The laces on my Supernova + from Adidas are waaay different in lenght… first i thought i‘m going crazy because i couldn‘t believe that a manufacturer would ship the left and right shoe with laces of different lenght; but apparently the sometimes do?!?! 🤪
Ethan, I think you should start a shoe co, or design a shoe man.. I mean who would be better at it?? Z
Would this be a good option for a mixed-terrain marathon (nothing challenging) or is too heavy and on the slow side?
Terra Kiger 7 vs. Wildehorse 7 vs. Pegasus Trail 3?
I got the new flynit and I’m debating if this is softer or the sand the flys are the softest best shoe I’ve worn im debating getting this.
Good for Disc Golfing possibly?
no issues with the lace length (they're the same size on my pair) nor the outsole grip, although to be fair i live in socal and inclement weather doesn't exist
Nike trail 3 first impressions: comfortable, light enough, but minimal ground feel and confidence-sapping traction. Will be good for easy flat. Does a comfortable non-racey shoe exist for technical trails? A cushioned roomy x-talon would be ideal. Suggestions welcome :)
The big disappointment with all Nike trail shoes is the rubber and grip.
ASICS on the opposite end of the spectrum have nailed it with a compound for road and trail that is pretty amazing especially when compared to hiking and climbing specific companies like La Sportiva and Salomon.
I'm laughing at this only because I ate sh!t in my asics like 3 days ago and went scree-ing down a huge hill.
Thankfully in the UK, you can get Nike trail shoes resoled with vibram sticky outsoles
Really?!
Where?
My 2’s have different length laces as well. Thought it was just me!
I am looking for a repl... Actually, my Peg35 Trail holds up so well - no rush 4 me.
The complaints on the grip? Well, Pegs have found their slot - dry or wet (pine) forest, dry rocks, being an approach and a cushy recovery shoes.
But when it's a MUD fest time - it's a Salomon time 😉
Easy choices.
Last race weekend example:
Downhill hike in the rain - Pegs worked
Downhill run fast - Speedcross rocked!
😎
I’m always surprised people like the Speedcross. Isn’t it too bulky to run on muddy ground? I can’t see past my Inov8s
@@rossbrannigan407 it's easy - you come back to "your 1st love". Mine was SC4.
I like its tight football-shoe fit. And 2ndly, the versatility.
Last race was a good mix of asfalt, dry & muddy paths, grass, loose & wet rocks. All that especially on steep decends was a perfect test. Clean butt proves SC👌 - no single slip.
Lastly, I never tried innov8, but I'd like to try (well, there's a cue with Hoka, Peregrine and Adidas asking for attention too 😄 )
Ethan... where did you get that shirt? It's dope!
💦💧
Any other shoe on your scope that would similar qualities of the Trial 3 BUT with a good wet grip? Cheers
Hi, can you tell me which is the lightest trail shoe that you ever tried?
I currently use Pegasus 36 trail , poor wet performance
How does pt3 stack up against Pegasus shield / wet conditions ,?
No issues with the length of the laces. On the contrary, I would not want them to be longer.
Hey Ethan! Is this good for flat feet? And would you recommend this or the Pegasus 38?
I have flat feet on me and i would recommend u for this one. It really has wide space fornur foot
Does buying a Pegasus trail 3 gtx make sense? does it even make sense to buy any GTX shoes?
If you had to pick one as go to trail shoe, this or hoka speedgoat, and explain why…go. Also, will you be reviewing the novablast 2? I’d love to hear your thoughts on that one
He already did reviews on the Novablast 1 and 2
@@denisp8396
Oh that’s right I have seen it. Still curious about Pegasus 3 trail vs Speedgoat. Speedgoat is my go to but I’m considering the Pegasus if Ethan describes it as a very comfortable trail shoe
@@markmiedema1981 I wish I could help you, but I've never tried them. 😅 The Pegasus looks comfortable, with a wide toebox, but that 10mm drop would be way too much for me. My knees always hurt when using high drop shoes. The speedgoat has a 4mm drop, which is nice, but it's apparently too narrow. 🤷♂️😅
@@denisp8396 Go with the Speedgoat 4 wide. It works for a lot of people who don’t technically have wide feet.
I've tried both.
Grip on SG is something else but too narrow for me (and I bought the Wide)
Sent back after 17 miles of trying.
Trail 3 are as plush as the SG but slightly wider. However it's the material which is soft and allows your pinkie ro stretch unhindered.
Grip is bad at first but improves massively after 50 miles when its roughed up a little.
Just remember to go up 1/2 a size
When you're gonna review the 4?
Are these strong enough to run up mountains with?
The laces are too short and I have had to change them because if using the runners knot I can't lace them up. They are both the same length :-)
Would you recommend it for an all-day all-situation shoe? i travel a lot and don't have space for more than 1 pair of shoes in my luggage. So literally if i buy this i will use it for everything, gym, running, dates, skydiving, going to the bar, you name it.
Go on I got it last week and am pretty much satisfied. Good looks with great comfort
Does anyone know if there is going to be a gore-tex version of this shoe and when? Trail 2 and the one before that did so probably this one also...
Out now…
First! Love the reviews Ethan!
This was a KIND review of the outsole. Nike trail shoes have the absolute WORST outsoles on any trail shoes I’ve ever worn, aside from maybe the Brooks Pure Grit v1. Maybe if you live in dry climates, but I live in Vermont and there is always some moisture on trails and there’s no other way to say it, Nike Trail outsoles SUCK. All three shoes and for years Nike just continues to ignore all the feedback consumers and reviewers are sending their way. I’ve even left reviews on their website to have them deleted. Like you said. Nike has plenty of money and resources but until they fix their outsoles, they have at beat subpar shoes.
Does anyone have any experience with using these on Decomposed Granite , my favorite park has a 3 mile stretch and wanted to know what the experience was on this type of run ???
Anyone else find they run 1/2 short? My normal size 10 (Salomon, Saucony, Hoka) had my toes too close up front. Felt like old Nike trail shoes that always ran short.
100%
fit? narrow?
Is there a good shoe for someone that runs on pavement but can have some snow on it at times? I have no idea what to get... There is so much to pick.
My problem is there are weather resistant, trail and just plain running shoes. Even of just Pegasus so I have no idea what would be best.
Is it a narrow fit? Do wide-footers need to go half a size up?
Probably a good idea
I went up a half size but I barely fit in an 11 1/2 in nikes and I just wanted a bit more room for the downhills. And my foot is decently wide but not overly, it’s definitely wider than most nikes tho
if you want a better road to trail shoe for less money, get the Brooks divine 2. they are 110 euros vs 125 for the pegs in Germany. Brooks are really small tho.. nikes my size is 46 while I need the Brooks in 47,5 wich sounds a lot like Ronald McDonald size 😂
Hi will these shoes hold on pavements and tar roads?
Can anyone confirm if the epic react foam is softer in the version 3 like it was going from the peg 37 to 38?
Yes it is feels like running on clouds
Love these. Can I use these as a road shoe also?
Certainly yes! Use them regularly on a mix of trail and road and they are great on either surface.
@@t0rte awesome thank you! Wearing them right now
hey how's your experience on normal surface? any issues ?
@@alexs1118 supportive, comfortable and not slippery at all
The grip is great BUT after the shoe is broken in...
I used the Trail 3 on a frozen/muddy/rocky trail and there was zero slippage but I had already run 70 miles on the road.
You need to take the out layer off for some strange reason then it works great
A trail shoe that doesn't grip isn't really a trail shoe is it?
Exactly. If this didn’t have a swoosh on it he would absolutely trash it. Hard pass.
Heel bone rubbing. Had to send it back.
Ethan, your shirt is blending into the wall behind you. It’s like a floating head shoe review. Which is both cool and kinda weird.
Sounds like the outsole would never work in Scotland 😂
I like the 2 a lot, but definitely prefer a slow down or something completely different in the mud.
Weather wise, is this suitable in southern California where it rarely rains?
Yes grip is crap! but best road to (dry) trail shoe (the No2). If grip similar I wouldn't buy it.
why dont they just stick a Vibram outsole on it. Come on Nike, sort it out.
Version 1 was great version 2 terrible version 3 tbd.
If you didn’t like 2, you won’t like 3
@@TheGingerRunner all I needed to know! Didn't use the 1, enjoyed the 2. 3 is up to bat. Thank you!
10mm drop....no thx :S
It looks like a broken toe waiting to happen 😢
this seems more like a comparison video rather than a review. dude i dont know anything about the trail 2 and dont care. tell me about the 3 by itself.
you can really tell when a reviewer doesn’t pay for the gear. £120 for trail shoes that don’t have any grip and they’re a strong recommend? come on now…
This looks like the kind of shoe I could destroy in 2 weeks.
This isn’t a trail shoe. It’s a sneakerhead type of shoe 😒
Hybrid shoe... road to mild trails... what most people do most of the time. Good long distance shoe for mild terrain. Not a shoe for technical stuff.
