Tier Point Runs - A Slightly More Advanced Guide

  • I've talked a few times about Tier Point runs on the channel and quite a few people have taken up this fantastic hobby as a result of those videos. Which is fantastic, but is also a little terrifying as I feel a sense of responsibility towards anyone attempting this sort of trip based on my advice!
    There are a number of slightly more advanced aspect of this sort of trip which I have alluded to in the past, but have never talked about in detail. Which I will fix in this video!
    If you are contemplating a run, its well worth your time to understand these 6 concepts!

    Thanks again. I've done a few back2backs, once in Stockholm and now, more recently, twice at the awful Frankfurt airport. BA is always remote stand in the latter. The good thing is that you just join the CONNECTING FLIGHTS route; no need to go through immigration. The bad news is that on my first of those recently, I misread the gate on the screen and spent 10 minutes going God knows where. Glad I checked at the next screen.
    Then the security line composed both the City and LHR flights and had one casual, useless person. I stood for 40 minutes as the time of my flight drew ever closer. The good news was that so many people on the flight were behind me that the crew would have had to delay the departure.
    Given all the interesting points you make, I'd avoid certain airports for B2B, especially Frankfurt and the awful Charles de Gaulle.

    That's why it's so easy to do runs here in the US, due to the domestic distances and/or number of segments you can formulate, and airports (both large and small) are all easy to connect through within a domestic itinerary.

    I made a mistake last year with BA. Only needed 30 tier points for silver and never just booked a flight to London or something. So ended up bronze. Wasn’t trying to get status but found myself there.
    BA awarded me tier points and avois for a reward flight in business to SFO. And I’d already done return to LV that year.

    I need 180 tier points to get to Silver and wondered if you had any recommended tier point run trips. I can’t do a BA Holiday at the moment but I did think about a Club Europe return to Athens/Sofia etc followed by either a UK domestic one way Club fare or a return Economy Plus domestic fare which generates 20 tier points. Do you have any smart recommendations? I’m more than happy to do a more adventurous Euro routing and to stay over for a night or two!

    • @MattsPlanet
      @MattsPlanet  Před 2 měsíci +1

      Sofia is always the first place to look - not in Summer peak season but £250 for 160 TPs is often doable... A PE run somewhere like Dubai would get 180 but would be a bit more expensive....

    Matt great information channel. Quick question….am i right in saying that although i have just earned my BA silver, in Mar, i will lose it in Nov coz that is the date i originally signed up to the Executive club way back…..I do have other flights next week that would edge me to Gold, but not enough points.

    • @MattsPlanet
      @MattsPlanet  Před rokem

      Hi Jim. When you achieve status, it last for the year you're in and the entire next one. So you'll be silver until Nov 24. Which is why its best to get the points as early in the year as possible, so the status lasts as long as possible. And why the 2 month grace period is so important. So if you got 600 TPs between 9/11/24 and 31/12/24 you'll still be silver when you travel (as you're in the grace period at the end of the year) and you'll then renew your silver for 2 more years. Cheers!

  • @mikiewifnoe360
    @mikiewifnoe360 Před rokem +2

    I am honestly confused by all of this. So what I wonder is, are tier points only designated to certain flights and routes, or do you earn tier points on all flights? If they are only earned by certain routes, how do you know which ones? I bet you have explained this somewhere along the line. Well anyroad I enjoy your videos even if I am lost most of the time, it is just fun to watch you.

    • @MattsPlanet
      @MattsPlanet  Před rokem +1

      Thanks Mikie. A very early video which is a guide to the BA exec club explains tier points a bit... Basically ever one world flight earns them, from 5 to 210 depending on class and distance. Business class are the ones to think about and its basically 40 for a business class flight

    Matt at this rate I believe you are the only man to help! Being a BA silver holder can I walk into an American Airlines lounge (one world status) do I need to convert BA to one world?

    • @MattsPlanet
      @MattsPlanet  Před rokem

      BA status should work fine. As long as the BA exec club number is attached to the booking it should show on the boarding pass that's issued - it'll convert to OneWorld Sapphire. Present that at the lounge and you should be good.

    Interestingly, I complained to ba about several long standing issues re cancelled flights without getting the EU compensation, and now I never get offered to purchase an upgrade, yet my 2 offspring get offers on their flights everytime. Not that ba club Europe with same seat as et, no recline and small cream tea is anything to pay £130 quid extra per flight, including sitting interminably, whilst everyone else is slow to get on board. When will they realise, get the back seats on first, and then everyone else can get on quicker as not waiting for people to shuffle their stuff into overhead bins. I don't know! In the last 12 flights I've taken with them since July 22, only 2 flights have left on time. Today's didn't have any food as " the handheld machine wasn't working for speed bird cafe" so no lunch / beverages at all. As if there's only 1 machine per flight! Looking for a new airline now. Thinking Turkish airline as they have consistently great food and serve hundreds of destinations

      It feels like BA is getting better, based on a non-scientific absorption of reports on various forums (fora???). Then I hear a report like yours which is scientific (as you report on all your 12 experiences, not just the ones you want to talk about) and its got a decent sample size, and I think I may have been quick to give BA the benefit of the doubt...
