  • Every (magnificent) concert has a story: I had just moved into a tiny roof-apartment near Frankfurt for an engineering internship and it was a dreary wet cold November evening with nothing to do. Residing in a large german city during wintertime is already depressing, especially just having relocated from Greece. So to break the monotony, I drove the Ducati in the rain to see this concert to lift my spirits and it was advertised to take place in a "castle" - however from what I remember it was like a big gymnasium with on the floor seating. Gotten into this new progressive jazz scene when a couple years earlier I saw Manfred Schoof Qunitet with Eberhard Weber in Athens. The intricate interplay and mostly just acoustic (amplified) instrumentation took music to a new level for me. Carla Bley - heard of her (JCOA escalators over the hill), and Hugh Hopper from Soft Machine ! Wolfgang Dauner too, first synthesizer live experience, an instrument I became infatuated with, two from cool Swiss group Om (on Japo records), Albert Mangelsdorff (overtone trombonist), a big black guy playing the tuba! and more, many now (living) legends. An awesome concert it was, two bassists and two drummers, 6-piece horn section, 2 keyboarders and guitar - 13 musicians in all !
Due to an unreliable motorcycle, I always left early, got there early too and secured a spot front center floor within spitting distance of these excellent music-minds. Two hours of bliss with about 200 in attendance. And then there was moderator Hans Joachim Behrendt (a person already of ECM's Manfred Eicher status back then).
Few weeks later between Christmas and New Years, in the snowy mountains of Austria I was playing around with my newly acquired Uher reel-to-reel, when on shortwave radio around midnight I captured a broadcast of the same concert, which I taped via microphone. Later transferred to BASF cassette, which I still have....(this explains the sub-par sonics). However, what a line-up, what a pivotal music experience. When I left this concert around 11 at night, I stopped to pick-up a hitchhiker, fully expecting she would not get on the motorcycle in the rain, but she graciously accepted. Gave her a ride to her commune, there were just the nicest people there, allowed me to dry up, got served a warm meal and hot tea, and they lived less then a mile from my place. We all became good friends - life wasn't so dreary anymore...you just need some good people and good music and living is easy. What a great experience that I treasure to the day. These recordings are fairly rare and are not found easily, thus this posting to share for free the pleasure and I hope not to step on anyone's publishing rights. I still have the studio sessions on tape from this line-up, that took place around this concert and I believe with the great Toto Blanke on guitar who could not make the concert. I may post at some future time....Enjoy

Bob is my good friend and he is born in Febr. 1945 - will take him some years to catch up. Give him some time for ripening.

Basis of the "European Tour" album. Saw the group at Central Michigan University. Might be the best version of "Wrong Key Donkey" ever.
