  • Wood Shed Build - Part 2. Levelling the ground. Setting Deck Blocks. outdoor channel.
    Back at it today to finish levelling the ground and setting my deck blocks for the wood shed build. I use an interesting way to find level, and learn a few new things along the way.
    Please note I am not a craftsman or skilled carpenter. The manner in which I am building the shed may not be the best or the correct way of doing it - it's just the way I am doing it. Hope you enjoy it.

    You’re off to a fine start on the wood shed build, Gord! With the water level, a little food coloring makes the level easier to read. I’ve used that type of foundation blocks before and they’re really nice to build with. Looking forward to seeing Part 3! Thanks for sharing!

    How's she goin'? Gord I have built many sheds and buildings over the years and what I have found out is we usually over do the construction details. The main thing is, are you content with the structure. Being as how we aren't structural engineers, our building practices may not be a professional grade, but we can all build sturdy and safe buildings by doing what you are doing. And if we feel safe and comfortable with what we have done, then the goal has been attained!!! Great start and looking forward to seeing the shed come together!! Take are!!

    Great video Gord . Crusher run is great stuff . We use that name down here . When I built my shed 6 years ago I dug 2ft holes and filled them with crusher run . Pound it down really hard and it turns almost like cement . Put the blocks on top . My shed is 10X12 . Hasn't moved and inch . Put a 1/4 screen between the deck and the ground to keep out the critters from living underneath . My 3 neighbours didn't do that and now they have skunk problems . Of course you won't need to do that . The hardest part of building these days is finding the lumber . Lumber prices have gone through the roof . I always over build . That shed is going to be there for years after I'm gone . I always wanted to build my own cottage but never did . I built that shed just like the way I would have built a cottage . No short cuts . With Guy having a sawmill I would have thought that you might have cut some lumber for the shed . You had some pretty good size logs there to cut many boards . Take care .

    A solid foundation in aspect is the best to start building on! The crush stone gave you a good footing, leveling your “pad” and using foundation blocks gave you a level structure to build on. Now comes the easy part building the shed!

      Send me a sketch of your plans, and I will let you know of some ideas of improvement. After you build your box for your joists, put blocking between them in a staggered pattern this will strengthen your floor. And I would use pressure treated lumber for this area. A plank floor with 1/2 inch gap between boards will allow small debris to fall through and air to circulate. Then build your walls on top of this foundation 16 inch on center before sheathing with exterior materials. Double your header plate all the way around and leave your soffits open for ventilation. Then add your rafter system.

    I always knew you were on the level! Sorry, couldn't help it. Those blocks are nice, I wish I had them about 10 years ago when I built my shed. In my case I didn't prep the footprint of the shed. I had a granite ledge near the surface and simply leveled the footings which were standard cinder blocks. Once I leveled the corner block I ran a string from that block to the next and so on using a bubble level on each block. Nice prep work! Best Regards, Jay

    Easy one man way to get grade on the ground is string, a string level and a tape measure.... Place your string at any height you want from stake to stake, mine is usually waist high so I don't have to bend to far over to read measures. 😀... Level your string and measure from the string down to the ground to see how much fill you need to equal your high spot measure from string to ground. Simple, very effective, and I've used it out up to 60 feet and got grade pretty accurate. Not laser accurate but darn good enough... Just got to move one end, usually low side, re-leveling string, from place to place checking grade of the area you want leveled... I did my 30x30 shop this way and not a low nor high spot anywhere before concrete pour. 👍

    On those blocks just get them set, level and close to where they need to be. you can cut wood spacers to place between the joist and the block to get things level. no need to dig out from under the blocks or add material under the blocks. I’m like you not a professional just sharing how I have used those blocks in the past. My shed is still level 12 years later.

  • @AkDadStuff
    @AkDadStuff Před 4 lety

    Hey there Gord, I have used a water level many times. We didn't use the bucket though, we just filled the hose with water and would take one end to one side of the building and the other end to the other side and the water would always seek its own level so you knew that each side of the building was at the same height. Good job.

  • @lonniechartrand
    @lonniechartrand Před 4 lety +1

    When using a water level be sure to keep your thumb over the end of the hose when moving around so as not to LOSE any water.
    That can affect your accuracy.
    You also should mention that your level marks are for reference only and that you can adjust your fill likewise.
    You don’t have to fill to original marks.

      Sorry you’re still having lumber supply issues - one would think it would start to improve by this point but clearly the demand still exceeds supply. I actually just called a lumber outlet near my property to inquire about rough cut pine for board and batten - and amazingly they have “a bit” in stock. I had to laugh when I asked the fella how much “a bit” was.... “oh, a couple thousand board feet”, he replied LOL! I’m building an outhouse so I think I’ll be ok!! But alas, the project will have to wait a bit longer - this weekend is mainly dedicated to continuing the work to kick off the term. Thanks for your well-wishes on that - its going to be an interesting launch! Cheers to you and the gang!

    Nicely done GP. So when did you get an enclosed cabbedd, tractor. did the same in May 2020 and haven't looked back since. I have AC unit, music and no skeeters or biting flies to irritate me while working. Smart move to get the cabbed tractor. I can't wait to finally get out there and use it. Once I get the green light from the doctor, then I can go out and play and might even make a few videos. Yup, the water leveling method certainly works. The Tamper will give you a pretty good workout too (smile). Sounds like you were starting to get some drizzling rain at 12:52. You're doing quite well establishing your firm foundation. Enjoyed a full-watch. Be safe and keep having fun, GP. Have a fine Friday and a fantastic weekend. Don

    Just a note about a water level. Always try to check on the same part of the hose. Checking at a closer area on the hose to the bucket will raise the level slightly. (like how you did on the last one at 4:46 with all the extra slack.)

    Hey there GP. You mean you don't have a tractor attachment for building a wood shed? What's with the manual labor? Ha ha.
    As far as disclaimers goes, I'm convinced that whatever I do is definitely not the right way to do things.

    Nice video on the foundation. Away from this video I was watching your video on digging out the big stump with Guy. I was going to ask what brand of stump bucket you have and if I could get one in the states. It really worked nice for you. If you could help me I’d appreciate it. Thanks for all your videos as I keep learning from them. Wayne from Wisconsin

    Good old fashioned water level is a good thing to have...though I do have that identical lazer you had in your hand....mine's a 5 way self leveling, is that what yours is GP ? Your load looks to be what we call inch-minus down here. It's whatever falls through the 1'' screen, including all the dust, chat and small stone. Packs super hard with compaction and water. Fun video...especially you getting a bit wet at the end....LOL

    • @GPOutdoors
      @GPOutdoors  Před 3 lety

      Yup, that's the stuff here - packs really well hard. I'm not sure if it was the 5 way or not - it was Guy's - he lent it to me. Always hard to see the laser line in the sunlight. Lots of rain here lately - lots! My sump pump has been working overtime . LOL!

    You had level marks on all the stakes. I don't understand why you reduced three of the stakes
    by two inches?????

    • @GPOutdoors
      @GPOutdoors  Před 2 lety

      Hi Chet. Great question - it is so I didn't have to build up the north end - so I dropped the level relative to the high ground. This way I only had to build up the south end and very little gravel needed at the north end. Cheers!

    Water levels are the original laser level from ancient Egypt. Only downside, is they don't work well outside in a proper Canadian winter.

    When one works in a profession such as I were we supply humans the most important compound and then clean their waste from of it, we use meniscus everyday.
    Pythagorean’s theory!? Also working in US standard?! This is to much GP😆
    One thing a water level can do that a line of sight or laser can’t is go around external corners or into rooms. Mother Nature is a mad scientist

      Morning 906! I didn't have to, but I did, because I plan on putting tire chains on it for the winter. Similar to the B2601, there is not enough room under those fenders for chains without the spacers, from what I could tell. Have a great weekend!

    Looks small for a wood shed as generally you want 3 seasons of wood storage to give it time to season and as an emergency backup in case of a bad year or an injury. The good thing is large out buildings can be built cheaply once you have even a cheap Alaskan chainsaw mill as the cheapest wood shed build I have seen so far simply used posts in the ground and not even fully squared off timbers for the structure, a simple metal roof and live edge boards for the walls to enclose but still let in some air.

    • @GPOutdoors
      @GPOutdoors  Před 4 lety

      Good morning and thanks Andrew! Some great points there. I don't heat with wood so I didn't need much space but if i did , I think that would have been an excellent idea - to make sure it could hold 3 seasons worth. Any feedback or advice along the way would be greatly appreciated. Have a good weekend!
