    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
    Leary (John Malkovich) threatens to kill another President as Frank (Clint Eastwood) gets under his skin.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
    Clint Eastwood delivers one of his finest performances, as a secret service agent haunted by his past in Wolfgang Petersen's taut thriller In the Line of Fire. Eastwood plays Frank Horrigan, a secret service agent who keeps thinking back to November 22, 1963, when, as an agent hand-picked by President Kennedy, he became one of the few agents to have lost a president to an assassin. Decades later, psychotic Mitch Leary (John Malkovich) is stalking another president (Jim Curley) running for re-election. He has spent long hours studying the psyche of Frank Horrigan, and he taunts Horrigan (feeling that there is a bond between them), telling him of his plans to kill the president. After his conversation with Leary, Horrigan makes sure he is assigned to presidential protection duty. Horrigan has no intention of failing his president this time around, and he is more than willing to take a bullet. But everything goes Leary's way -- he is smart and cagey and the president's aides refuse to alter the itinerary. As the election draws closer, Horrigan's chances to catch Leary look to be less and less a possibility, and he begins to doubt his own abilities -- both now and in the past, when Kennedy was murdered.

    This had to be the scene that earned Malkovich his Oscar nomination for this film. He really allows you to see the human side of a very ruthless and cold blooded character in this clip. Very powerful stuff!

    Great movie and great scene. The stars and supporting cast were spot on, in my opinion. I forgot that it was a movie---it felt like real life. The chemistry between Eastwood and Malkovich was magical, for lack of a better word. I read/heard Eastwood "dug in his heels" to have Malkovich play Mitch Leary.

    OMG this scene is so epic. John Malkovich was brilliant, his rage is so palpable one second, and chillingly calm the next. Maybe I'm watching the wrong movies, but I don't see any recent actors with that dynamic; they just explode on-screen.
    This was also the first time I ever heard Clint Eastwood curse (the f-bomb no less), which still sounds SO WEIRD to me! He looks too polite and, Idk, you just want to tell him "Don't talk like that man". The man's a legend.

    • @arthurbishop3173
      @arthurbishop3173 Před 5 lety +1

      Clint's generation didn't curse or even use coarse language (mostly). Clint's generation did things behind closed doors, out of friend's/family's/media's reach, like cheat on their wives/womanize (Clint's specialty), abuse drugs (not Clint, but others did), drink excessively, porn, etc. That was just part of how their generation did things, for better AND for worse.
      Post Clint's generation, much of that other stuff (except cheating) was more out in the open, as people didn't care/judge that much anymore (esp about alcoholism and drug abuse).

    God I loved the Leary character. His costume work, gaining weight to look like a wealthy businessman, care fully constructing the composite pistol. I would have loved to know more about his background. I'm guessing military background in Special Forces. Then special activities division of the CIA where he would have been involved in counter-insurgency and direct action (which means he would have been known as a "wet boy"). He had a lot of cash to give the big donations to get his into President Traveller's inner circle. And what was with the model cars? Classic '90's film.
