    I'm watching this over and over with great interest in getting one of these. A Whisper Room was my first choice but they're much more expensive. Are you happy with the sound isolating qualities of your booth? I live in a particularly noisy place so I'm afraid to cut corners.

    • @SmartMouthVoiceOvers
      @SmartMouthVoiceOvers  Před 4 lety +3

      I spent a LOT of time researching and asking several very successful VOs (who have the opportunity to regularly try out the different brands) - the general consensus was that StudioBricks is much better than the Whisper Rooms. The sound isolation is second to none and they just look 'sexier' (more professional than the 'covered with carpet' look). I would HIGHLY recommend a StudioBricks. Their customer service was AMAZING, too - they stayed in constant contact from the time I ordered, through shipping, customs in NY, and on to my final destination (which I had to change after it left Spain). They were just incredible. If you want the contact info of the person I worked with on my order, just let me know!

    Really helpful video! I'm tossing up between buying this or trying to DIY for a cheaper price point, did you consider building a booth yourself? And you mention VO upgrades, what was standard with the One model and what was extra?

    • @OnTheFlyDIY
      @OnTheFlyDIY Před 4 lety

      I am an avid DIY'er (my other CZcams channel, 'On The Fly...DIY' is full of them and all proceeds are donated to no-kill animal shelters and rescue organizations - czcams.com/channels/9KrOpYNgK7N_rURjwdXQyQ.html ) so my very first thought was to build one myself. I looked at acoustic-specific material like Quiet Rock, Green Glue, and several others as well as researched constructing a double wall, decoupled configuration to get the best possible result. If I would have been staying in one spot for the long run, I would have attempted it. I was looking at a massively heavy, thick booth. I really needed something that I could set up, break down every couple of years when I moved, transported, and reassembled in the new location. So I started researching the booths on the market, comparing specs, and asking successful VOs who have had the opportunity to try out some of the ones I couldn't get to (like StudioBricks in NY) what they thought. I was able to try out a local Whisper Room but the others were out of reach. The overwhelming consensus said 'StudioBricks!'. I eventually got to go to NY and tried one out there and it blew me away! The Whisper Rooms didn't even compare once I got to demo test the StudioBricks. For the VO edition, there's a bass trap, boom arm, monitor arm, shelf, and copy stand that is included. Technically, I probably could have built those items myself but this was not only easier but it looks so much more professional. I'm a very frugal person and I'm glad I spent the money on the VO specific items vs building them myself. I was also extremely pleased with the customer service that StudioBricks offers - from the order date to the delivery date, they were in constant contact and helped every step of the way. They even helped me change final delivery location when my move date from IL to the Southwest was unexpectedly moved up by several months.

    Super informative, thank you so much! I was wondering if you can sit down in this booth, or is the One model really meant for standing? I record audiobooks and can be recording upwards of 5 hours in one go, so standing up the whole time would be pretty tiring.

    • @SmartMouthVoiceOvers
      @SmartMouthVoiceOvers  Před 4 lety +1

      Thank you!! Yes, there's enough room for a chair. I use a bar stool type chair with a back on it when I do longer narrations or when I'm doing a Zoom/Skype and I don't want to stand the entire time! :)

      @@SmartMouthVoiceOvers Thank you for the swift reply! I'm definitely tempted. I know you said you decided on StudioBricks after doing a lot of research. I was wondering if at any point you considered Demvox? And what it was about SB that gave it the edge?

    • @SmartMouthVoiceOvers
      @SmartMouthVoiceOvers  Před 4 lety +1

      @@XXcartoonXcrazyXX Yes, Demvox was one of the booths on my list as I was researching. Ultimately, my SB decision fell on these points: 1)I asked some of the most successful VOs what they've used on different jobs and which ones they were most impressed with and why. SB was at the top of their list, in most cases. 2)SB booths give you -45 dB in noise cancellation. I couldn't find any other booth that beat that. 3) While I primarily do the VO myself, I have also started engineering other VOs' sessions. I wanted a booth that looked as professional as I could get. I personally don't like the 'covered in carpet' look. I thought the SB sleek look was the 'sexiest' and most professionally looking booth I could find. Hope that helps!!

    Hi, thank you so much for this very informative video! I'm seriously considering getting one. I have a few questions. Is the cooling unit that comes with the Voice Over Edition quiet enough to use while recording? If not, is it comfortable to work inside the booth for long periods without getting too hot? Also, I live right outside of NY. Do you know if they ship from NY, or do all orders come from Spain? And, regarding delivery, when it arrives, do they leave the package outside, or do they at least bring it inside your apartment? I'm curious as I may be moving to a 5th floor apartment in an elevator building and I know the pieces packaged together are very heavy. Thanks for your help!

    • @OnTheFlyDIY
      @OnTheFlyDIY Před 4 lety

      The ventilation unit is surprisingly quiet! When I'm doing short sessions, I don't even use it as it's comfortable. For longer sessions, I use it on the low setting and I don't even notice it. My mic picks it up but the noise floor is still low and is easy to filter out. Everything ships from Spain - they will make your booth when you order it (so it's been made especially for you). I was very happy with the way everything went - they stay in constant contact from the time you order to the time it's delivered. They coordinate with you on final delivery date and time and will not just drop it off and leave it. It comes in a 1200 pound, 8 foot tall crate (and it has to remain vertical) so they will bring it to the outside of your door but that's it. They really can't bring it in. All of the pieces are well packed and HEAVY. We were able to build with two people but OMG, the door weighed a ton and we probably could have used one additional person for that! An apartment building will be tricky - I'm sure it can be done but definitely tricky. Make sure your apartment has at least 8 foot ceilings - you'll need 8 foot clearance to get it built. Hope that helps! :)

    • @GalaxyNexus1
      @GalaxyNexus1 Před 4 lety +1

      @@OnTheFlyDIY thanks! Regarding them bringing it to your door, I'm wondering if that means they'll bring it to the door of my apartment or just the door to my building (if building, I guess I would have to open the crate outside and bring everything up piece by piece myself up the elevator?) Also, regarding what you said about using the ventilation system for longer sessions, you said you filter it out. Does that mean you have to process what you record using a DAW? I've done lots of in studio sessions but this would be my 1st time working from home, so hoping to not have to process anything, particularly if I'm doing a session via Source Connect. Your insight is greatly appreciated!

    • @SmartMouthVoiceOvers
      @SmartMouthVoiceOvers  Před 4 lety

      @@GalaxyNexus1 No problem! No, it will be the door to your building vs your apartment door (the crate has to stay vertical and it's 8 feet tall - the freight company contracted to take it from the port to your final destination will bring it to the outside of your building). So you'd need to cart each piece upstairs to your apartment. I think it could be done but definitely tricky!
      Yes, I use a DAW for my sessions but I also do the post-production for most of my work. I record a back up if I'm recording via Source Connect, too (just in case!). But your engineer at the other end of Source Connect can also sample the noise floor and filter it out on their end as well. The ventilation sound is very VERY minimal. I was so highly impressed when they demonstrated it when I was in NY. Hope that helps! :)

I've been a professional VO actor for many years, but as I said before, have never worked from home, so all of this is new to me. The price totally depends on shipping (where you are located in relation to the port that it comes to on the East Coast). The 'VO Edition' options were an extra $1000 (I think, it's been a little over a year and a half since I went through the ordering process). I almost didn't get it but I'm SO GLAD that I did. Everything fits perfectly (better than I could have made myself and I'm a DIY'er) and looks so professional. It takes up less room than anything I would have constructed.
