Really? It felt like when I would bring up other black metal bands in high school like Marduk, Watain, or Dark Funeral no one knew about them, it was literally only Emperor, Mayhem, Burzum, or Darkthrone that people I grew up with talked about

In the early 2ks I had patches shirts I had all the compact discs. I LOVE emperor and I can honestly say that I've never once in all these years listened to prometheus all the way through. But everything else start to end is solid Gold. Love this series thank you!

I gotta be honest, I’ve tried listening to Emperor on more than a few occasions but I just can’t get into them. I can’t find one song of theirs that I can get used to listening to. Edit: After listening to them a little more, I'm starting to dig there stuff. Curse you All Men! is my favorite song of theirs.
Emperor are not as accessible as their reputation suggests. I fell in love with In the Nightside Eclipse pretty quickly but Anthems took me a while to warm up to. It’s just incredibly dense and chaotic music that takes many focused listens to fully digest.

Dødswvlf 666 I actually generally listen to Nightside more often because it has some of my favorite classics like “Towards the Pantheon”, “Inno A Satana”, “I am the Black Wizards”, ...etc, but if I have to analyse both albums technically, I would say Prometheus could get a higher score due to its general higher standard of musicianship, much superior audio production, and better consistency - I feel like a few tracks on Nightside get rusty after a few minutes. While all tracks on Prometheus are thoroughly enjoyable.
The thing is, when Bathory started using keys, Quorthon was all about that Viking Metal thing(nothing wrong with it I love the genre), so It can hardly be classified as Symphonic Black Metal, as for Celtic Frost and Mercyful Fate, if you play Proto Black with aymphonic elements you are NOT playing Symphonic Black Metal.
All records from Emperor were Masterpieces.... Many dont like Prometheus but honestly which other bands released such a record in that time who came close in chaotic / complexity ? My favorite is Anthems
Thorsten Schieren It's the first album I listened to of Emperor because someone said it was a bit similar to Vektor. Well it's pretty good but then I slowly worked my way back through their discography and that was when I realized that some BM is actually amazing. Nightside and Anthems are some of the best albums I've ever heard.
I like Prometheus a lot. But after familiarizing myself with Emperors earlier excellent and more atmospheric albums, it is a completely different genre. It should NOT have been released as an Emperor record. It's fundamentally a progressive metal album with very little black metal motifs. Emperor are a symphonic black metal band and shouldn't have tried to make Dream Theaters or Fate's Warning meets early Bathory. Lol
Prometheus is the most sophisticated emperor album. It's not quite "emepror" and it's not quite "ihsahn" - it's the step inbetween, and it is the most complex black metal album ever written.
Ayyysan :P I actually pref Ihsahn's solo work over Emperor, and Emperor is awesome! Also, Ihsahn, Abbath and Fenriz are such cool dudes, each one has its own vibe and were never a part of the whole church burnings shenanigans, super interesting and fun to watch their interviews.

I like a lot of black metal--but Emperor is one of my favorites.....there early stuff is fucking legendary. It is all the things I listen to black metal for. That is just me, I listen to all kinds of music though....old school black metal will always be my favorite. Reminds me of the old days when I would buy a compilation album to discover new bands....good years.
I remember the old days of searching for the best new black metal band. On a whim, in the late 90s I bought an album from some obscure distro by a band called Blut aus Nord and has since become my go-to for experimental dark music. I basically picked it out of a hat and I still listen to the album more than probably anything else. It was their original Memoria Vetustia album. Thanks to Emperor I started taking chances with new music, I found a lifelong obsession in the process.
My favorite thing regarding Emperor's Wrath demo is that it is essentially a debut album. It's got all the songs and length for a full length and is better than most of their contemporary's. I see it as their first album and Eclipse as their second. Not counting the 4 song EP.

I can still get down to their part of the Enslaved split(which you seem to skip over here... it has better versions of Cosmic Keys and Black Wizards), but everything else just doesn't do it for me anymore. I saw them in 99, and it was awesome. Watching their nostalgia shows they have trotted out since they broke up has made me think they should have stayed dormant.
I never really figured out exactly when they came out and I was old enough and thought I was into black metal got smashed in the face w in the nightshade

Interesting analysis, but forgot few points about music itself. Emperor is sort of story how black metal evolved. In Nightside drum beats were power metal etc but not much blast beat, because teens in Norway didn't quite know how to play it, then when they got hold of it was nothing but blast beat. Same goes with guitar playing style, where all strings are played constantly was sort of invention of Euronymous, which Emperor utilized. Taking techniques to the limit and culmination point, there aren't much else to go, except start from the beginning, which 'old school' fans expect everything to be. I also add that because how guitars are composed in relation to keyboards, Emperor is very difficult to produce and mix, because there are so many notes and harmonic lines. Album version is very different from live, used to be at least.
Prometheus is the least 'emperor' of an album. that does not mean that this album is not great. and actually yeah, this album is easily the best Emperor album.too good for their own sake and especially for their beloved black metal fans.

it sounds like a blizzard, I think it's cool. the key to getting into something like death or black metal is to not look for conventional metal things you already like such as good production or standard thrash riffs. it's completely different. expect a lot of blizzardy tremolo picking from black metal, and vile dissonant riffing from death metal
Hard disagree on Prometheus. They never inspired another album to sound like that (outside of Ihsahn's solo work) because no other band was able to make an album that complex and layered. All that said, it was my least favorite Emperor album for years and took me forever to get into it. I felt like every time I listened to it and was going in one ear and out the other, and I felt like I wasn't remembering any of the music. Eventually it clicked, but it was laborious to listen to until it did. I now have a vinyl copy of this and it sounds absolutely phenomenal and very powerful.
Anthems is more appealing to me. It was my first album and it also it more intresting to me. That's not a jab at Nightshade. Also I find "over rated" to be pointless. A band is not tied to how their fans talk about them. Your videos are entertaining in spite of differing opinions.
I hated it too at first, but underneath the terrible production are a lot of brilliant musical ideas. It’s better to think of it as Ihsahn’s first solo album, and not a “trve Emperor album”.

DownFall NetWork I heard it 4 times now n all I remember is the added keyboards. They just don't have a guitar player unlike the later immortal which is killer. And I always like a little personality in bm vocals. This guy is a windtunnel from 3 miles away
it sounds like a blizzard, I think it's cool. the key to getting into something like death or black metal is to not look for conventional metal things you already like such as good production or standard thrash riffs. it's completely different. expect a lot of blizzardy tremolo picking from black metal, and vile dissonant riffing from death metal

Hard disagree on Prometheus. They never inspired another album to sound like that (outside of Ihsahn's solo work) because no other band was able to make an album that complex and layered. All that said, it was my least favorite Emperor album for years and took me forever to get into it. I felt like every time I listened to it and was going in one ear and out the other, and I felt like I wasn't remembering any of the music. Eventually it clicked, but it was laborious to listen to until it did. I now have a vinyl copy of this and it sounds absolutely phenomenal and very powerful.

I hated it too at first, but underneath the terrible production are a lot of brilliant musical ideas. It’s better to think of it as Ihsahn’s first solo album, and not a “trve Emperor album”.
An elegy of icaros is a fucking amazing song. Learn a few of the riffs on guitar, they are innovative as fuck!
