I've bowled like this for many years and a couple things to know is that each lanes is different so make sure you adjust so you know how to bowl on that lane, also cradle the ball on your forearm so not all the weight in on your wrist, it adds more revs and more power back.

I started bowling like this 12 games ago (3 sessions of 4 games) and I'm already hitting my average again, more control than 1 handed and also have more hook, never could figure out 1 handed with no thumb so for the past year or 2 I've kind of hit a wall at the 140 average mark, didn't take long to adjust and last game today I figured out where I need to throw for a consistent strike, (actually the same line shown at 0:30, just I'm left handed so it's mirrored) all I need to do is work on my consistency so I can hit that perfect strike line and work on relearning spares now that I have more RPM

Im thinking of removing the inserts and having more space for my 2 fingers to help me allow to rev/spin the ball more without pain.

    @TDarKL Před 5 lety +61

For the love of god, please do not listen to what this person is saying. This is completely wrong on so many levels and will lead to inconsistencies that will hurt your game if you try to bowl above the amateur level. The way how he is bowling (thumbless 1 handed) can be done at a high level but you need to learn the proper way to do so. Tom Daugherty displays this skill properly and bowls just like this, except for a few MAJOR differences. If you watch how Tom rolls the ball, he cups it into his wrist, creating accuracy by forcing the ball onto his forearm and the ball is released on line (where you are looking)
Watch closely from 3:00 to 3:10 you can easily see how inaccurate you will be by not cupping the ball onto your forearm. I used to bowl exactly like this and in league my highest game was a 178 and my average never seen above 140. Tom also has a shorter approach (could be for timing or just his personal style, I lean towards the latter) yet still manages to have a ton of power and accuracy.
Among the other comments about the finger holes and that a house ball does not hook, yes, that is correct but he is trying to inform people either just getting into bowling having difficulties hooking with 1 hand, or improving those bowling thumbless 1 handed. I agree, do not use a house ball as a ball that is drilled and fitted just for you (ask your local pro shop at the center) will help immensely and you can pick one up and get it drilled by your pro shop for around $200 and will last you years, so it is worth the investment if you are attempting to hook the ball and get results.
Lastly, his release is completely wrong (yes I read the other comments, jesus stop berating this man as he does not know) You NEVER want to release past even the 3 o'clock position (for right handers) on the ball as this results in the ball overturning and you having WAY too much tilt, not allowing the ball to finish (another topic we wont get into) and hit the pins properly driving through the rack (allowing you to strike). "Just like a professional" as he states in the end, is not how ANYONE on the PBA tour releases the ball. The professional release is working the inside part of the ball and coming through it, generating an insane amount of power and revolutions. If you picture a clock, and the finger holes at release are near the 6 o 'clock position like shown in this video, the pro release is where the finger holes are near the (this is for RIGHT handers, left handers would be 5, 4 or even 3 o'clock, Jacob Butteruff I'm looking at you) 7 or 8 o'clock position with the elbow bent IN. This keeps the ball extremely close to your center of gravity allowing you to use your body weight and transfer the momentum properly to the ball and follow through on balance during your post-shot.
I am no professional bowler, but I love this sport and just trying to provide some constructive advice instead of some of these other people in the comments literally just saying "don't do this" or "wow so wrong lmfao idiot". The one alternative advice I will say in conclusion, try to convert out of this style into 1 handed traditional or 2 handed (like Belmonte/Simonsen). I tried bowling exactly like this in league as mentioned before and could barely hold a 140 avg for almost 2 years. I switched to 2 handed and found my shots are WAY more consistent (because I have guidance with my non bowling hand) and I can properly stay on target. Only 1 1/2 years in and my average is 180 with my high game being 279. Nobody can tell you how to bowl, but if you decide thumbless 1 handed (like this video) is what you enjoy, study Tom Daugherty like a book, and you will be successful.
P.S. I think this person made this video for his English class, so again don't bash him unless you have something useful to say. GL on the lanes!

That is one hand position for maximum back end motion but you can go anywhere from completely behind the ball to the handshake completely in the side of the ball. Wherever you position your hand you should follow through straight through not rotate your hand to the right that is completely old school as the bowling balls now a days need no help really in hooking that hard anymore. I have a 530 rev rate and can roll the ball almost completely straight or if on the side of the ball have a violent left turn.

You should clarify that during the close-up shots of the ball you are using a plastic house ball, which will hook slightly but not much, and then during the strike shot you are using a reactive resin ball, which will hook a lot. Also, the release you are showing is basically a two-handed release. There is also a version known as a one handed thumbless release, with the difference being that the left hand doesn’t stay on the ball during the backswing. - Bronze coach

Moving the hand around the ball from 6-12 is a less efficient manner of hooking the ball. I believe it is better to keep the hand up the back of the ball, and let the fingers in the ball just come up around it. It creates less strain, produces more revs, and, at least in my experience, is more repeatable, and makes you less likely to pull the ball. I will say though that this video is good, and it provides an easy, step-by-step explanation, in order, of what you are looking to do, and is pretty clear and straightforward, which is honestly what is more helpful to the average bowler in my opinion. Keep up the content 🎳 🎉 😃

When I discovered this technique on my own (pre internet) I would line up my right foot at the next dot to the right of the middle. Instead of the curve shown in the video going all the way from left side - then all the way to the right - then hooking back toward center pin, I had used an alternate path.
With my right root aligned between center and the first dot right of center I would throw the ball so it would then hug the right gutter and come back at the pins right where my foot was aligned. As a lackadaisical teenager I would consistently bowl 220-280 with this technique.
Fun fact: The technique also works to bowl the ball from behind you between two legs.

Any new equipment will take time to adjust to and all balls are not created the same. Your ball may not be a good match for the particular combination of your local house pattern and your game. A different layout or surface on the ball may be needed to give you the shape you're looking for. You may also need to adjust your release or your alignment and targeting to get the ball to the right breakpoint.

@@ceoofcheeks5881 its not two handed since he is only using one hand for the swing till the release, two handed bowling keep their hands on the ball till the release. 2 fingers no thumb is the easiest way to hook the ball and also the most inconsistent. I say that as someone who bowled 2 finger no thumb before switching to 2 finger with thumb and then 2 handed without thumb. I got to a point where it was very hard to progress and especially playing on sport shots it is an awful way to throw the ball sometimes. But if you're out there to just have fun then this is the easiest way to hook it

At 00:58 he says to use finger tips. This is inaccurate. You can use more finger than that and many of us do. You will be able to hold the ball better and control it more since you do not have the thumb to help. Just be sure to experiment with your finger position and find what works for you. I have bowled with two fingers since I broke my thumb in the 7th grade. I use a standard finger position. I'm much more consistent using my fingers than only using finger tips.

Step 6 should be how to break the tendons in your ring finger. Sure, in a 9 lb bowl you won't feel it, but throw a 15lb a few times and you will be scrambling to find painkillers to get the swelling down.

You're not walking down the lane. That is unless you want to eat shit when you hit the oil on the actual lane. It's also not called a "walkway". The area the bowler stands on is called the "approach". The lane is the area past the foul line and is where the ball rolls. Lastly, you are not supposed to rotate your hand the way you described. For best results, your hand should stay behind the ball and come up the side of the ball. This is all using house equipment of course. For even better results, get your own stuff. I use all 3 fingers and can get more hook than what you can with a house ball. Come on man. If you're going to teach people, at least learn proper terminology and technique (even with house equipment). This video wasn't all bad, but definitely needs improvement. Just my humble opinion.

Worst explanation how to throw with 2 fingers (no thumb), this is coming from someone who has done this for over 15 years. Bowling ball in video is by far the worst way to demonstrate it all, finger holes are way too big for your fingers, gotta use a house ball that has smaller holes or use a ball custom drilled for you.

jonogunn that depends greatly on a number of factors. To try to make it simple, if you are a right handed bowler, you can start by targeting the third arrow from the right, and then take note of whether your ball misses the 1-3 (pins) pocket to the left or to the right.. if it misses to the left, then move your feet to the left… If you miss to the right, move your feet to the right. How much you move depends on how much you missed, for every pin width that you miss move your feet three boards, and keep your target the same. Bear in mind, this is a very simplified answer.
