Wow, the Slovak word for police (Polícia) is written exactly like in Portuguese! 😲

    • @Snaakie83

@@Snaakie83 - I know all that but what are the chances that a Slavik language spells the word letter by letter like we do? Even the accent (´) is in the same letter! I'd expect it to be more similar to the Czech "policie" or the Slovene "policija" or the Polish "policja".

    • @ESCLuciaSlovakia
      @ESCLuciaSlovakia Před 5 měsíci +23

@@module79l28 I was equally surprised when I saw polícia written in Portuguese :) The difference is that the accent in Portuguese means accent and in Slovak it means long vowel (like double vowel), so í = ii, poliitsia. There are more words in Slovak that end with -cia, like revolúcia, milícia, edícia, petícia, pozícia, tradícia... and also names Patrícia, Lucia. In Czech, those words end with -ce and -cie: revoluce, milice, edice, petice, pozice, tradice, Patricie, Lucie. All of those words (except names) end with -ão in Portuguese, right? Polícia is like the only one we have in common.

Nizke Tatry - Low Tatras - right over the Poprad valley, next to Tatras.
Tatra banka - Tatra bank. :)
Hotel Tatra is quite common name for a hotel in Slovakia. Or used to be.

If you zoom closely on those Audi A8 D3 front grills, you can see the badge W12. So its naturally aspirated W12 6.0 liter gasoline engine with 450hp and 580Nm or 428 lb-ft. I think the Slovak goverment has two of those limousines. This engine is made from two VR6 Volkswagen engines(something between V6 and in-line 6 engine). It was used in Audi A8, VW Phaeton(Probably most luxurious car made from VW, similar to Audi A8), VW Touareg(VW SUV), Bentley continental GT/ continental Flying Spur. This engine was made also in 700hp and 750lb-ft variant. Engines like this were made in “mad times” of VW - they made a lot of these special and interesting engines. Worth mentioning is for example V12 Turbo Diesel engine used in Audi Q7(493hp and 1000Nm or 738lb-ft) and in Audi R10 TDI race car which won the Le mans 24hr race 3 times.

You are right, Tatra is the name of a mountain range in Slovakia (and a small part in Poland). In fact it is the world smallest Alpine-type of mountain range :-) The Tatra car manufacturer got the name after they tested their new cars in the High Tatra mountains in the newly-born state of Czechoslovakia in 1919 (peacefully dissolved in 1993). So the name is kind of a reminder of common history with the Czechs, also Tatra had a car factory in Slovakia for a few decades.

    Comment on 2:00 mark:
In the number of European countries police vehicles (and exclusively police vehicles) sometimes have blue+red roof lights, instead of just blue roof lights.
There's a reason to it - you, as a regular public member driving your car, are supposed to react differently to blue+red or just blue roof lights.
With just blue roof lights, you're supposed to just give way, ie. clear path.
With blue+red roof lights, you're actually obliged to STOP on the roadside and wait till said vehicle (and usually convoy accompanying it) has passed, and it is safe for you to carry on thereafter.
    ...
I know that countries like the UK, Germany, France, and plethora of others do not use blue+red combination. The majority of Central and Eastern European countries, however, do.
    ...
Just another bit of useless knowledge that you may be interested in 😅

in Czechia, where the traffic rules are basically the same as in Slovakia (we were one country after all), we’re now starting to implement these on all EMS vehicles. the reason is simple - better visibility. in our case, there is no functional difference between all-blues and blue-reds, it’s only about the age of the vehicle as the blue-red beacons have been legal for a short time and there is no reason to throw out functional ones.

Hi IWrocker, you mentioned the Tatra car, I worked in that company. The name comes from the iconic mountain range in Slovakia, paradoxically, the company's seat is mainly in the Czech Republic, but at that time we were one state of the Socialist Republic of Czechoslovakia, yes communism ruled here then, but that is history. I worked in the branch in Banovce nad Bebravou in Slovakia. Anyway, air-cooled trucks are quite a rarity (I think until today) 90% of the production was directed to the USSR and friendly communist countries. One of the interesting things, the cars intended for work in the north of Russia were heated bodies so that they could dump the load in the cold - 35 degrees, those cars never went out, they ran 24/7, only fuel was added

One of the reasons you do not have Opel in US is that GM, who owned Opel and Chevrolet at a certain point of time, has decided to make a clear market separation between US and Europe. At the time, Chevrolets have also been sold in Europe and GM felt they was poaching on Opel's market. Opel's sales were quite low at the time (not that they are much better now :D).
As for the van engines, they are most likely diesel. Diesels are much more common in EU for the work and fleet vehicles. The petrol options are usually not strong enough for the work vehicles. Most probably due to all the EU's regulations regarding engines emissions. So in EU the trend is downsizing the petrol engines and using turbos on them. That is why you see a lot of 3-cylinder turbo engines nowadays. In US, you do not have these limiting regulations so the option to have a 5/6-liter petrol engine is still there.Plus, the petrol price in the US is still much lower compared to EU (according to money.usnews article I checked, it is about half the EU price per gallon). These two factors probably play the biggest role in the widespread use of the large volume petrol engines in US and low need for the diesel.

Superb is cheaper sibling of VW Passat, but there is difference between US and EU version of Passat. SK mean Slovakia like FR means France and the double cross blazon is the sign of the Slovak republic. Fabia is like Polo, Octavia is sedan version of Golf(Rabbit in US) or Vento/Jetta/Bora which was Golf with trunk in Sedan design and Superb is like Passat.
The white text on the sides in the green line is saying "help and protect". Yes, most of the cars are diesels. That AUDI A8 is W12 version which is armored. That's why we have older version, because is used only for special occasions for VIP visits. Black police cars here are similar to US. Black are for special units like President, PM guard or not marked police highways patrols, detectives etc.

The translation of the channel name is "Bratislava life in the city"
The Suburbans had plates from Austria (Vienna is an hour away from Bratislava)
Station wagons and SUVs are more common here - it's quite rare to see a police sedan in Slovakia
The police liveries have changed recently from the army-looking white+green to more modern/european grey+light blue+neon yellow
That buling is the Presidential Palace and is usually the first stop for most official visits.
The plates have also changed since this video - the font has changed (no need to exchage old plates but new cars have the new plates).
Diesels are more common in Europe it seems and I wouldn't be surprised if all those vans were Dielel+AdBlue
Thing to note: last car in the motorbrigade was a car with a similar livery as the police cars, but the text says "Vojenská polícia" which means "Military police" I don't know what's their role in the convoy but just something you might have missed.
    New livery on a
    RAV4 plug-in hybrid: czcams.com/video/MhOCnW1e2Dw/video.html&ab_channel=RTobi%28Rummeltobi%29

couple of fun facts - there are lot of wagons in Slovakia. actually most of people prefer wagons for their family cars. since we don't usually buy those large cars as in US (Europe don't sell much of those), wagons have the biggest trunks you can get.
You also asked about diesels - yes and that's another thing over here, diesel used to be much cheaper than petrol and also diesel engines have better milage, so people are accustomed to buy diesels. even for public service vehicles as you can see.
Suburban plates are A for Austria (our neighbors) - someone explained that already.
And yes the old big Audi is A8, but don't be fooled by those old Audis and Skodas (like that superb II), new government always buy new cars for their comfort (corrupt pigs) - currently I believe it's BMWs 7series

The BL before the coat of arms means the car is registered in Bratislava. The code after the coat of arms is a unique code for the car just like everywhere else.
Tatras are the mountains in Slovakia, they are pretty huge. There are some slopes of Tatras that are in southern Poland but most of it (with the tallest peaks) is in Slovakia - after which the Tatra trucks were named, after which the hotel was named, a bank and many things in the country.
Škoda is the most frequently used car in Slovakia, since they originate in this area (former Czechoslovakia). Slovakia is also Europe's biggest car producer, many luxurious cars are produced here.

All other plates are Slovak plates (those with the Slovak Republic coat of arms on them). There is one blue plate with yellow letters that is also a Slovak car plate, but those are Slovak diplomatic corps plates. The video is one year old, and since then, our police force has gotten new vehicles with modernized livery in blue and yellow, as you can see in most European countries. Also, new cars are mostly crossover plug-in hybrids like the Toyota RAV4 or BMW X3. And fun fact the old cars you can see mostly have tuned engines straight from the factory that you can't order with your dealer.

It is a national emblem: a double cross, which is set on three mountains- Tatra, Matra, Fatra - national natural parks and with a historical subtext - Slovakia is located between them. The building where the meeting was held is the presidential palace in the middle of Bratislava - the capital. If you want to visit Slovakia, I recommend: Terchová, Spišská Kapitula, High Tatras, Slovak Paradise, Dobšinská ice cave, the highest church tower in Slovakia in Spišská Nová Ves, Betliar and many, many other locations. Slovakia is a small country, but we have many natural and cultural monuments. For example - Slovakia has the highest number of castles and chateaux in the world per population - Spiš Castle, Krásna Hôrka, Červený Kameň, etc. And definitely have to try our national dishes, such as bryndza "dumplings", goose with lokša, goulash, cakes, ostipeko (there is a lot of it) and of course our alcohol (Spišská Borovička, Tokajská wines, Topoľčianska mead, Tatratea....)😁😁 We are a small country, but with a big heart 🇸🇰♥️😍

Opel and Vauxhall versions, no longer made, as Opel and Vauxhall - GM's division in Germany and the UK - was off loaded to PSA; Peugeot Citroen - Renault's native French rival. Very popular here in Australia - virtually came from no where - used by Australia Post and Renault probably sells more commercials in Australia than cars. This particular Renault van is also rebadged here as a Mitsubishi. Renault also owns part of Nissan. Companies are getting together to survive. The van is also rebadged as a Nissan.

It is indeed a little odd to see big American trucks in the mix.
But the thing is that embassies are free to obtain whatever vehicles they prefer, as long as they've road legal.
In Denmark you can recognise diplomatic vehicles because they have blue licence plates with white numbers and letters.
In that way, the police knows that they're not allowed to do a search for stuff in the car... It'll require a permission from the government, as diplomats may carry sensitive information that regular police isn't supposed to see.
It's a mutual agreement, pretty much like diplomatic immunity.
So the vehicles attached to Danish representations around the world are also above the regular police (unless they are being really dangerous to the public)

    • @mackomako

@@mackomako hmmm then I'm a little puzzled why we don't see more blue plates in this entourage...
Perhaps it's simpler to get local plates, so the embassy has just chosen to only have a few on blue plates.
Denmark has a very high tax on cars, so if you take a walk around the neighbourhoods where most of the embassies are located, you see a lot of blue plates.

GM sold Opel and Vauxhall to PSA (Peugeot, Citroen, DS) and Opel/Vauxhall started to base their new models on the PSA-Plattform (a Opel Corsa is mostly the same as a Peugeot 208) - Opel in the PSA World was the more sporty designed "german" brand, Peugeot the comfort orientated brand and Citroen the weird brother brand :-) )
