  • Ok so first off, BIG DISCLAIMER, I'm not a hair dresser and I know little to nothing about hair...but I do know what works for mine, and as I'm asked about my hair all the time, I thought I'd share the products I use, and how I use them to get volume in my fine, lifeless, limp, flat hair. Hope it helps. x

Another great tip for superfine hair especially at the crown where you want some lift is to buy a very inexpensive crimping iron. You lift up the top section of your hair and clip it out of the way and you crimp the under layers along the part line which adds a little bit of texture and volume then you release the clip and let your top layer lay down. It’s another technique instead of teasing or back coming your hair. Works beautiful on me!

There are some great tutorials all over CZcams from hair stylists to hair enthusiasts teaching how to get volume on fine limp hair. Products are your friends, volumising mouse, root lifter, sea salt spray, etc. vary the amount of product and experiment to find what works for you. My local hairdersssing salon has been a wealth of information for products. With blowdrying, there are loads of tutorials out their on how to dry your hair using a brush. I’ve simply watched those and kept using my trusty cheap blowdryer that was in the bathroom and a round brush and as my technique improved, I got more volume at the roots. Also check out hot brushes/blow out brushes, they are are a fraction of the price of a Dyson, easier than a round brush and dryer, but achieve very similar results.

I too am clumsy with using a hair brush and a dryer in the other hand. Then I discovered the Dyson Airwrap and haven't looked back. I use the same attachments you showed in this video. It didn't occur to me to use the stiff bristle brush to style it in the opposite way that I normally wear it. So thanks for that tip. As for the curls, I haven't had the courage to use the barrels yet. That's next on my experiment list!!!

Hey Gemma, I really waited for a dyson video 😅 thanks for that ❤️
I am currently testing myself through popular hair brands after using and loving the Grow Gorgeous products. I still do live them but I got a bit bored and I have a tiny Instagram account so I wanted to test a but. I'm currently trying the Briogeo oat series and the mango cherry for sculp regulation. And soon I'll get my hands on the curlsmith bond repairing line. Not sure if one might be for you as well. The briogeo is quite rich so it might be to heavy for fine, straight hair (I do have a perm). I also tried the Innersense mousse for volume and I quite like it. It gives fine hair some grip and crates a little lift as it's name sais. So this might be interesting for you. I love my dyson to the moon an back. It's styles my hair and smoothes these cuticle doing this as the hair flow always goes in the direction of the hair shaft. I have fine hair too but very much of it. The dyson dries this bunch of hair in no time. I love it. But to hold a curd or wave or any form my hair needs the perm. Without it every curve disappears in minutes. So for my I found the best combination

Hi Gemma, thank you for this hair tutorial. I can see the dyson makes it so quick and easy. With that being said, I have thick hair and as straight as a board and will not hold curl. I’m going to try the 2products u used and hopefully it will help give me the volume I work so hard to get. You are so cute and precious.

I’ve been using the thickening spray and volumizing spray from Aveda. I like that their products are vegan and natural. I apply the thickening spray all over right after the heat protection. Then spray the volume spray in sections at the root like you do. However, after a few years I started getting itchy and dry scalp. I stopped using the volumizing spray and dry shampoo. My hair still had some volume. Every now and again I will use the dry shampoo and volumizing spray but I don’t do it after every shampoo day anymore.

I really like the Colour Wow Raise the Root Spray in damp hair before blow drying...it works the best out of a long list of root boost products I've used down through the years! Moroccan Oil Dry Shampoo is also a great one, if you're looking for another dry shampoo to try! Smells gorgeous and no tackiness. I have no idea if this is available outside of the US, but Kristin Ess makes a Loose Styling Powder that is just…chef’s kiss! My hair is very fine, thin, and flat as well. I usually have it in a pixie cut, but now I’m really curious what this powder would do for me with my hair grown out a bit. It’s similar to a dry shampoo, but it’s a little bit sticky and builds volume at the root like nothing else I’ve ever experienced. You won’t like it if you want your hair to feel soft all the time, but that’s a trade-off I’m happy to make. It’s got a fragrance, but it’s very mild and doesn’t last, which is critical for me. As if all that wasn’t good enough, it’s $11 for a bottle that will probably last me a year at least. I just hope they don’t discontinue or change it 🤞🏻

I use L’ange products. Thick it, Glaze and Posh on towel dries hair( start with a dot of Posh, less than a dime size of Thick it and Glaze) This protects and detangles while giving volume. Then the Volume mouse, mainly at the roots. Drying is basically the same
I use a blow dryer and finish with the 60mm le Volume. Then Daja Vu dry shampoo. I use either the Cascade or Keratin shampoo and Slicke conditioner.

My bank account would be so much healthier but for the money I've spent over the years on volumizing and texturing shampoos, conditioners, styling products, tools. My current favorites are Amika Kure set for wash day; Color Wow Cocktail, carb infused followed by Color Wow Dream Coat; day 2 and following - Pureology. Color Fanatic leave in; Olaplex 7 oil for ends; last day before washing - Kristen Ess loose styling powder if I need volume or r+co Spiritualized dry shampoo. Don't use hairspray often, but, if I must, Amika Fluxus. Other loves include BB texture and thickening creams and their hairdresser oil line - my hair has always loved some oil in the lengths.

I know your pain with fine limp hair. I live in the extremely humid South USA. The battle for volume and lift is always a struggle because as soon as I find a product, it is discontinued. I think you should try The Wave Maker Texturizing Spray by Cake Beauty. It is a line made in Canada. It it absolutely the best. Even better, you can find it under $15 USD. I only use it for lift and volume. Hair like ours just cannot do waves if you are planning to go outside. However, my hair does not sit flat with this and it last for 2-3 days which is a miracle in our humidity. I am over 60, so I have been fighting this hair longer than you. I rarely write comments. I have used the products in your video. This foaming spray rocks them! We fine limp hair victims have to look out for each other.

Southern Belle just went straight into my cart.. I have the same texture only mid-back length. I’ve been debating for years whether to cut because it just seems to get flatter and thinner and oilier faster the older I get. Yours looks so much easier to manage. 😅

I'm growing mine a little...but you can guarantee as soon as it gets to a nice length I'll have a great idea to cut it all off again. Haha! xxx

You have no worries that most of us will go out and buy the Dyson device because most of us can not afford it or would buy it if we could afford because of the ridiculous price.

I have had issues with the root cover up. If you look at the bathroom countertop after spraying, there are little dots of hair color that show up on the counter. I have to wear a towel over my shoulders or little dots of color end up on my shirt, And I just do a quick spritz with the spray on the top of my part. Go figure!

I have fine hair too and keeping volume for days does not work for me. I have to wash my hair every day for having this fluffy, fresh feeling.
What helps me for keeping volume at my roots is teasing the hair right underneath the hair on top.
I will for sure try the mousse though.

have you ever considered a few layers to give lift? My hair is thinner than yours. I have about 10 strands that could be layered.

Hmmm putting dry shampoo after drying your hair i don't know I personally wouldn't necessarily recommend it because surten dry shampoos can irritate the scalp at least for me it does it gives me itchy scalp. And dry shampoos can be harmful for people with scalp conditions.

My hairdresser recommends it, but if you have a scalp condition you have to be careful with all hair products x
