I gave my 93 year old grandfather a hat with my university logo on it and he said “Thank you. Now I can practice saying my grandson goes there.” I had just come out as ftm the year prior.

My mom tried to fix my gender dysphoria with tickets to see Hamilton. After telling her I was going to start medically transitioning she suddenly started going on about how she thinks I’m not going out enough and that she just doesn’t want me to waist my life. I think she came across one of those articles claiming TikTok is making people transgender. Somehow this conversation ended in her buying me and a friend Hamilton tickets. Went to the show on Friday. It was great! Still trans though.
Broadway musicals are known to be popular among LGBTQ+ people, as is theater in general because it gives people the opportunity to explore different aspects of identity. For trans people in particular, every day can feel like theater because you're having to perform your AGAB according to societal expectations. So perhaps this is an accidental ally moment?

I’ve seen Hamilton and it is quite funny, but wow, I have no idea how your mom came to the conclusion that watching Hamilton would stop you being trans.

As a cis guy, I too am befuddled and frustrated by the lack of privacy in male bathrooms. I've had to extend a leg from seat to door to keep it closed. Pooping as if mid cossack dance. Not recommended.

It's an American thing, unfortunately. Any time I went to somewhere outside of North America there were real stalls with actual privacy. Japan even lets you play the sound of running water to cover up any noise!

As a non-American I'm befuddled by American public bathrooms. I could never EVER imagine a bathroom without a lock in Finland. Or with big gaps in the door for that matter. Urinals are rare here too, and there aren't really differences between male and female bathrooms. Finns are generally very private people though, so I guess it makes sense.
@fr33z1ng German here, and while there are urinals in the men's restrooms here, we definitely also have properly constructed doors, which can be locked. And we are NOT overrun with people doing drugs or having sex, despite what some USians claim as the reason for their bad doors, and our stalls still can be cleaned.

Funny story about public bathrooms. When I was a kid, we would sometimes go on road trips, and when we were at rest stops, I would instinctively follow my "dad" (will explain the quotation marks later) to the men's bathroom, until "he" noticed and told me I was going the wrong way.
Fast forward to now... I am a trans man, and the person I thought of as my "dad" at the time is a trans woman. She was actually the one going the wrong way, not that either of us knew it at the time.
Hey, did you go to any rest stops that simply didn't have doors at all in the stalls? Sometimes at campgrounds, too. I don't get it, except maybe to discourage people shooting up or putting graffiti on the walls?
@@jooleebilly Not rest stops, but there was a nightclub I went to once that didn't have stall doors. The bathroom doors were propped open too. I basically went to the stall farthest from the door and hoped nobody would come in. Thankfully, nobody did, but peeing at that nightclub was still a nerve-wracking experience.

I don't know about rest stops, because I would always use the urinals, so I didn't really pay any attention to the stalls. (I haven't been to a rest stop yet since starting my transition, so I don't know about the women's, either.)

I'm 34 amab, non binary, and present mostly femme. I have a 5 oclock shadow even immediately after shaving. I was getting my oil changed this week and the technician said, "Your car is ready ma'am... sir... ma'am... Sorry, im not used to the whole [gestures at my whole body]". I was so surprised, what I ended up saying was, "oh dont worry, you got it correct at least once." and i felt so awkward, i just got in my car and left.
at least they sounded not-transphobic, that's a relief

I mean my (ex) husband got called ma'am quite a few times when we were together and he's cis ... So people get confused in situations that aren't that confusing too. There are also those with medical conditions that can make them look more in the middle, or heck even untreated menopause can give a lady a thicker jaw and some whiskers. People don't necessarily know without asking. That's why normalizing being different, asking for pronouns, ect is not a bad thing. It helps those that are not cis and also those who's bodies change in a way that makes them more ambiguous. Or a native man with smooth cheeks and long hair not having to feel horrendous because he got called ma'am again. 🤷

I'm NB but still use my AGAB pronouns, but the one place I really feel the dysphoria is the hairdressers. They're still so ... traditional, and I can't afford to support smaller more LGBT+ supporting places because they often have higher prices (fewer clients), it really sucks sometimes
Trans guy here. My very first experience at a barber I called ahead of time and told them I was a trans guy to ensure I got someone who would be cool about it. When he sat me down in the chair he asked if I was looking for a masculine cut or a men's cut. It was such an insightful and honest question. I told him "men's" and described what I was looking for. Additionally he actually shaved my hairline (a tiny bit back on either side of the widow's peak) which really made my entire face look more masculine.
You are right that smaller places can be more expensive, especially if you are fem. I'd recommend a couple things. One, go to more affordable places' social media and scroll back looking for LGBT+ affirming posts. Once you find one, actually call and explain your situation and ask whomever you are talking to who they recommend. If they aren't at least a bit keen then thank them and move on to a different place. There are a lot of queer and allied people working in the industry at every level and it may take a bit of legwork to find a supportive stylist, but not a lot. And it's well worth the effort to emotionally feel comfortable as well as being able to get a result you love.
can you go less often so the money expenditure evens out?
Do people get angry with you for that? For using your AGAB pronouns I mean?
I've taken to cutting it at home, I'll be honest. For me it was better to change to a buzz cut than go through the dysphoria of it all, though it's not my preference for cut it's something I can do at my skill level. Some good advice about phoning round salons though, might give that a go!
As for the pronouns, I don't really know if folks get angry at me. I've certainly gotten my share of odd looks and genuine questions. But I live in a place where the majority of folks have a "live and let live attitude", so weirdly a lot of the worst comments have come from LGBTQ folks who are confused about why I don't fit the mould of the stereotype of the Non-Binary person they have in their head, rather than the more conservative folk out there who just think I'm the "weird neighbour" and let me be. Unfortunately folks who are early in a binary transition, or use they/them do not have a good time of it living round here

I I am a Sis het female.( I hope I said that right) I am still learning I started listening to you when i met my boyfriends children he has tw9 trans fem daughters and I started listening to you based on their referral. Anyway I was watching this while shopping in a store without my headphones. So it was playing low but out loud and several people i passed just turned and looked at me. I thought about explaining but then thought whatever and continued my shopping.

ik you probably won't see this, but I'd still like to share. I'm 15 and a trans man, I pass quit well apart from my voice. I was sitting in the eye doctors lobby with my brother waiting for my sister's appointment to be over. an old lady walked out of one of the rooms, I smiled and waved at her, and she said, " I hope you boys have a nice day." the joy that filled my body was so much I almost couldn't handle it as it was the first time a Stanger gendered me correctly. :)

Growing up, I was called a girl by my bullies who thought I hated it, told I act too girly by _teachers,_ wanted to grow my hair out reeeeeaaaaaally long, made more friends with girls in school than boysーalso got to braid their hairーopenly talked bout shoujo (girls) manga I read to my friends who didn't read the genre, always favored female characters in stories, liked to draw fashion, didn't correct people online when they assumed I was a girl, liked pink things a loooot, and eventually started crossdressing, all before graduating high school.
Y'all... It took me a whole decade after graduating to figure out I am trans... I am so ashamed of myself for being that freaking dense. Lol

Nah, girl. I figured out that i was transmasc last year at 28 years old. I think seeing other older transgender folks online definitely helps that no one’s too old to figuring out about themselves. I have to remind myself to not self compare as everyone’s transgender journey is unique to each person.
@@wednesdayaddamsghost - Even worse. I figured it out because a girl I was dating online broke up with me after she realized she was a lesbian and I cried and said "I wish I was a girl" and my counselor was like, "Wait, back up. You said what to her?"
It took several months of learning more about trans people to actually conclude I was trans, but that moment was the big "Oh no" moment for me. lol 27 years of my life forced to live uncomfortably as the gender I wasn't, broken down because I was sad about a girl I met online leaving me. Lol

I'm almost 2 years into transition and I had to fly for the first time since transitioning. I pass very well and my binder set off the body scanner. I honestly expected it so I was ready for the TSA agent to pull me aside. I told him I was wearing a binder and of course he was confused. He slid his open palm down the front of my binder and was still confused. So I explained to him that I'm trans and it make my boobs disappear. He was so flustered but thanked me for explaining. I just wish I remembered my stp because I would have loved to see what exchange would have happened. 😂

Wtf, that has to qualify as sexual harassment... first time flying after transition, a patch of sweat on my back set off the scanner (???) and someone had to pat down my back (awkward) but they were quickly satisfied there was nothing alarming about that patch of sweat. Most awkward airport search I've had was when I forgot to take off my belt and someone had to examine the belt buckle (I was frozen) but again that was let go pretty quickly, I imagine because people forget to take off their belts all the time. No packer-related airport problems thankfully.
Semi-related, I had an awkward time flying in early transition because my passport photo wasn't the most up to date and I was a minor (17) flying with my mom who has a different last name. Most awkward conversation around ID documents I've ever had and my mom had to misgender me to not raise even more questions. But on the same flight, people who weren't questioning me about my passport called me sir, which was nice.

@@malter95 not OP, but not down as in "into", down as in "down the outside of the shirt on the front of your body". My binders always cause this, it can be uncomfortable because most people don't like strangers in their personal space, but it's not sexual harassment.
I've had similar. My binder set of the scanner, I was asked if I had anything on my chest, I replied "Boobs", and he replied "Oh, ok, well I have to do a pat down". Yeah, a few inches down my chest it was like his hand was magnetically repelled from my body, his eyes went wide and he just went "Oh, OH, you can go". Like dude, I told you.
I just hate it cause the scanners don't have to be like this. The engineers can make it so someone doesn't have to press a button to designate what sex they think you are.
Recently I (i’m agender btw) had to use the restroom. I typically use the women's restroom, but it was blocked off and being cleaned. I figured “i have no gender, i can use whatever restroom i want!” And was all confident. I entered the guys restroom, was fine, and then someone came in. They were at the sink and i panicked (i look pretty feminine and i’ve never used the mens restroom before and was kind of hoping no one would come in while i was in there). I walked out, head down, and quickly washed my hands before leaving and seeing someone waiting for the kid that had been in there. I looked them right in the eyes and nodded awkwardly before quickly walking away. Not anything crazy but was so embarrassing for me as a socially anxious person.

I mean... With women's lines I've been sorely tempted as somebody that's (probably) cis to use the usually empty men's room. Idk why we don't have private stalls in America. It would never matter if we didn't have 2 inch gaps...
I was at a show one time and during intermission, I had to pee sooo bad but the women's line was sooooo long. So I went in the men's room - there was a line, and I was super fem-presenting that day (skirt, high-heel boots, etc.) - but I waited in line for a stall anyways. A few of the guys kinda looked at me sideways, but didn't say anything. Then a guy come in behind and he said in a loud voice something about me seeing a penis & that I was in the wrong bathroom - so I, in a similarly loud tone, responded, "If I see something I've never seen before, I'll throw a dollar at it." He decided he didn't have to use the restroom, I guess, he walked away and the other guys in the restroom just looked down at the floor and minded their own business. I got to pee and washed my hands and then went back to my seat & enjoyed the rest of the show.
For context, I still haven’t fully come out to my family.
I remember in November my sister and I were hanging out and ended up talking about how she started embracing doing things that were for “men”. At some point, our conversation led me to say something along the lines of “I don't see myself like that.”
She asked me why. I got nervous and started stuttering before saying “I don't feel like a girl.” That’s how I came out to my sister

I was MOR-TI-FIED, bc:
1- it was a Catholic highschool, with a lot of homophobia by students;
2- I was not out to anyone, let alone people of my class;
3- I hadn't even told her I was any flavor of the rainbow??? 😨

in my personal opinion, when people used to compliment my deadname, it felt weird not only because I didn't like my name, but because it wasn't actually a compliment to me or anything I had done. Now when people compliment my name, I feel really proud that I put actually quite a bit of effort into choosing one that fits me, and it feels so right now that I always loudly take credit! My name is something that I accomplished and is part of my journey, not something that I was just assigned as that has nothing to do with my person, and it feels like a real compliment in comparison to what I felt when people complimented my pre-transition name/appearance before.
I work in a factory and (on most of the production lines there) we have packing the finished product into cases, by hand. And we do refer to this task as "packing", and the people assigned to do it as "packers".
And since discovering Jamie's videos, and learning a little about the trans experience, this makes me want to snigger a little.

My trans female cousin looked so defeated whenever someone would deadname and misgender her at a funeral that we were at recently. So I hugged her and apologised that people were so rude. And she was like oh I'm used to it but she appreciated me hugging her and calling her by her name (I don't think she's quite legally changed it yet) she is also thinking of getting a trans tattoo at some point and has asked me to accompany her while she gets it done as it will be her first tattoo and she is nervous about it. And I was like absolutely ❤
My grandmother just can't remember my agenderd cousin's preferred name. (She's got dementia so she gets the pass from my cousin. And is just happy to be remembered. And the love and hugs and worrying.)
And I can't either mostly because my cousin deadname them as well so I get confused if they go by it or not.
Sometimes it's just honestly confused and mistakes because one can't be sure and assumes the "closest" knows. Now I know to ask explain I still get genuinely get confused because we don't see eachother that often that it slips me mind and I don't want to hurt them.
This happened a couple of months after I first went full time (mtf), and before I had my name legally changed.
I was working as an over the road truck driver. When I arrived at a particular customers warehouse in Georgia they had this little guard shack where I had to check in before being permitted onto the property. So I walk up, and give the guard my manifest number and then he asks to see my driver's license (still with dead name), not typical, but not unheard of, and seriously awkward for me at that point. So I fish my licence out of my purse and hand it over. His immediate response is, "I need *your* license, this looks like your cousin's or something." I then had to spend roughly 10 minutes trying to convince him that that was my license. He was obviously not convinced, but finally let me through saying, "I get you don't want to wake your cousin up, but please have him check out when you guys leave."
Hilarious that he wasn't bothered in the least that I might be illegally driving an 80,000 pound vehicle without a license. And extremely affirming that nothing I said could convince him I that my license was in fact mine. Also horrifying to be stuck in the position of trying to convince someone of that. I did make arrangements to get my name change expedited and get a proper ID ASAP.

For our Trans men bros out their getting their first male haircut. A basic cut that works for most people is asking for a 3 guard on the side with a fade to the top. Then, for the top, ask them to blend it in. I'm Trans fem, and this was the cut I used for most of my life before I figured out I was Trans. It should look good on just about anyone, and then you can keep using that until you decide what else you might want.
This is awesome advice, my first *real* haircut (lol) was in 7th grade and it looked like I got attacked by a lawnmower. It was really, really bad. I'm a trans man, but I'm pretty sure I just looked like I was trying to transition into some shrubbery. 😂

I ordered a packer online, and went with my mom to get the mail when it came in. She kept asking what was in the (very discreetly packaged) box. Apparently his mother insisted on calling me he/him until my, "Parts were chopped off," and then asked my friend, "Why can't you get any NORMAL friends / a girlfriend?" I laughed so hard I nearly ran out of breath.

So, when I came out as agender to my mother, she asked about pronouns or prefered names and such (she was and is still very supportive) I told her I didn't care much about pronouns and that I liked the name I had since birth.
So baisically every once in a while swiches between using He/she/they with me and calls me her son, not always her daughter and, IDK im just very happy to have someone as supportive as her in my life.

I used to wear a packer and would often just throw it anywhere in my bedroom without thought. We had a woman and her sister clean our house once a week. If I wasn't packing I would find my packer placed on my pillow. So yes, the cleaner at that point knew that I owned a sililicon, flaccid penis. And she knew I was trans, she started cleaning our house before I came out and started transition. I don't know if she knew what I used it for, I never asked!

I am a cis woman. I changed my name about 45 years ago. It is a one letter name (not an initial), so I get comments all the time. Mostly along the lines of how cool my parents must be. I just laugh and say "it's a taken name, not a given name". My parents were born in 1914 and 1916, had me in their 40s, and were never cool that way.

So, my school building is undergoing some heavy maintenance work and will be closed down for some years. So we got moved to another building in town, which is a bit smaller, and the first day we got told that there was only going to be one restroom for both boys and girls. A lot of people were pissed but I'm so happy, we have a gender neutral toilet! Accidentally but it's still so great!

I also have a funny stp story. At the time during this story I was on night shift and my mother was living with me so I was asleep during this exchange. I have a bad habit of cleaning my stp in the bathroom sink and leaving it there to dry. My toilet was having leaking problems so finally a repair person was sent over to my apartment to fix it. I was asleep in the living room and the way my apartment is laid out the repair person would not see the living room at all. My mother is disabled so she is in my bedroom because it's more comfortable and closer to the bathroom. So when the person was here to fix the toilet my stp was just chilling out in the sink. The whole exchange this guy was giving my mom weird looks. She didn't realize why until he left and she went to the bathroom. When I woke up from work she yelled at me "Stop leaving your dick in the sink!" While gently slapping my upper arm like a mother does. I thought it was so funny. But my stp doesn't chill out in the sink anymore.

Yep. I was called a lesbian because of my complete lack of interest in boys. Apparently my complete lack of interest in girls was irrelevant. Well that is when I wasn't being accused of making my best friend cheat on his girlfriend with me (also my friend). Nothing was actually going on, but the sheer disconnect between those two is bamboozling.

I am a trans man and i have many awkward toilet stories, one of them was i went to the toilet at an aquarium in london. I hadn't long been out and was still new to to going into mens bathrooms.
There was only one stall at this bathroom so i went in to do my business. Part way through a dad walked in with his kid, and the reason i know this is becuase the gap between the stall and the closed door was so big we could all see each other.
There is nothing more awkward then locking eyes with someone as a young trans man who is sitting down to pee 😅

I got booked into a residential hospital stay and they had to take inventory of all the belongings i brought in and this led to trying to explain WTF a binder was to the nurse. I had set my Zoom name to my new name, because I had been on a Zoom for a trans group. But then I forgot to change it back before I went on a Zoom with some people I wasn't out to yet. It didn't out me, though. They made the assumption that I had a new girlfriend and I was using her computer. I just let them assume that and didn't correct them. But then, a month later, I came out to them and explained everything.

Cis guy here, just on the bathroom thing: I also don't get people who use the stall with the door open. I only use stalls because urinals make me uncomfortable, and the amount of times I had the exact same thing happen of opening an unlocked one just to find someone using it is too many to count. I've even seen people not lock the doors in whole individual toilets, like in service stations and bars, instead of just stalls.
Even on the one toilet I sometimes use that has no locks (it's the only public toilet along my reulgar commute) I hold the door in place with one hand and aim with the other just to make sure no one opens it on my arse (though to be fair the stalls there are so small that the door would hit my side before anyone could see anything).
since year 6, ive been growing my hair out(im year 13 currently amab and non binary) so all throughout secondary school a lot of the younger kids keep asking me if im a boy or a girl, and for a while i just said "yes" and walked away lol. it can be very affirming. I have now, however, switched to saying "no" because i realised why it felt so good them asking. I also got told i look like "that princess from Brave" Idk if it was an insult or what but it was very affirming

A couple of funny stories I have.
One time I was at a store, and I called out for an employee. They said "Yes, ma'am?" before they saw me. This was before any HRT on my part.
Then, a few days ago, I told a friend that the meds I'm on will cause my chest to be more sensitive. He jokingly asked if I was growing boobs. I answered "Yes" as seriously as I could.
My nipples have been so sore since I started HRT! (About 8 months, now.) It should be worth it, though.
I came out 'cause someone I knew asked why I play female characters all the time and I pulled the "oh, I just like to look at girls" (which still isn't entirely a wrong answer... 😋) and she said "uh huh... you sure your not trans?" and I was all "..... I don't know what that is..." and she told me. After about a couple weeks of my daughter letting me try her cloths on ('cause who knew we were the same size 😂) I decided I really must be trans and now three years later... Ta dah. 🤪🙋♀🏳⚧
I don't use public toilets. It's just a lot of sitting and not being able to pee out of nervousness.
To be fair, before I came out as trans, I hated public toilets annyway, disgusting, smelly, puddles everywhere... Just... No, don't go there.
So, not that you need more stories because everyone has sent so many but here we go! I am transfem at university however I come from a very conservative family so my university paperwork was filled out with he/him pronouns. I kind of just accepted it and just threw myself back in the closet. Until I joined my school's D1 Ultimate Frisbee team... and when they added me to the team GroupMe I forgot that I had my pronouns as public... Needless to say, showing up to practice was a little awkward however the team was super nice and supportive. They also helped me change my paperwork; I now live in women's housing and living a glorious feminine life at university!
My kids live with my mum because of their and mine disabilities. My eldest (enbie/masc) keeps saying "I want it cut like [my son]" but they get a barber to do my son and a hair dresser to do my eldest I regularly get "please tell Nanny!" I do, honestly.
I didn't know that Blahaj was a trans icon, but it explains why a trans fem kid who lived with me for a year wanted one for Christmas a couple of years ago.
Story time: Back in 2020, I came out to my best friend and next-door neighbor. He stopped looking me in the eye, or even talking to me once I started dressing femme. Then, a few days later, he came over and told me he couldn't see me any more because he's a married man and I'm a single woman.
Recently, I bumped into him as he was doing the gardening and told him I'm no longer single (I've been with my partner for just over a year) He came around the next day saying it was my fault for wearing "those clothes", that I'd betrayed him with my choices, and that he had prayed and been told by god that I'm excommunicated.
I tried telling him that this wasn't a choice. After 30 years of prayer and repentance trying to make this go away, this is who I am. He just yelled "NO!" and slammed his door in my face.
A couple of weeks ago I overheard his wife mention that I was outside hanging my washing out, so it seems like he was going to wait inside until I was done so we didn't have to cross paths.
I was still hoping that we could be friends again at some point, but given that he's still so bitter after four years, and won't even attempt to listen to anything I have to say, we can definitely call that bridge well and truly burnt.
I am so sorry, hatred and ignorance are truly terrible and hurt everyone, both of you lost a dear person because of that.

i've got a story!
i first figured out i was trans about a year and a half ago. there was a period of about 6 months where i was reasonably certain and questioning, but i didn't want to pull the trigger just yet. at the time i was living in a housing program with a very good friend who was identifying as trans at the time. towards the end of my period of questioning, i seapped vehicles from a suburban (massive) to an ancient subaru impreza (tiny). i had a lot of difficulty for a while with paarking, because i was used to parking a much larger vehicle with a lot more ground clearance. i was constantly grinding the front bumper against the little parking bars or leaving my ass hanging out way too far. my friend made fun of me a lot for being bad at parking, and at one point he straight up asked why i was having so much trouble
