  • Let's hope you never find yourself in a knife fight, especially because the best defense against a knife is situational awareness and the ability to outrun the attacker. However, it is still beneficial to train in knife usage. Learning how to use a knife offensively can help you practice better knife defense. In this video, Kevin Goat discusses using your knife in an offensive manner against another attacker armed with a knife.

I have had the pleasure of working with many great instructors. Guro Joel Huncar, GM Bobby Taboada, GM Gil Lafantasie, Guro Jon Henn, Guro Dax Williams, Guro Dean Franco are my main influencers

No wonder your knife training is realistic and practical. I was trained by Dan Inosanto and Force4Training that teach similar to what you do. Where is your dojo located?

I like to hold my knife backwards for self-defence because its easy to control it while defending myself as you see the threat is not the person who is attacking its the knife that he is holding so that's my target as for the aggressor's target its my body. So it's kind of keeping my distance so he doesn't whist lock, and holding the knife backwards makes it hard for him to whist lock if I am in a boxing stance. and just quick slash when even the knife 🔪 is closer to you he will get hurt then you can run or keep fighting according to the situation

I hope to never be in such a situation but I've always thought as a kind of hypothetical risk assesment the average street rat would shit bricks if their mark held a blade like that, less lunging and a lot more unpredictable

[NEED ADVICE] If a person [+45 yrs] is considering either Krav Maga [KMWW] or Bobby Taboada's Balintawak system for self-defense, which should I choose per your perspective. If you have time, I'd like you to please note your rationale on the subject. Much appreciated. :)

Balintawak is 100% stick fighting. Blunt object training. No blade, doesn't factor blades Into training. There is cross over with all FMA. But blade FMA focused crosses over easier then blunt stick, vers blunt to blade. You will learn valuable skills. But combatively blade is better. I pick FMA.
Krav is a crap shoot unless you find a great teacher. Fitness and unarmed martial arts matter a lot. I'd rather find boxing or Muay Thai. More easy to find a good teacher. Try each out. Who is a better teacher?

It is impossible to pull out the hand grasped by the wrist. It is impossible to cut the hand holding the wrist. The hand is pulled out by twisting it towards the opponent's thumb. At this time, the opponent hits his fingers in the eyes.

That is very good training. Should someone be in a struggle like that, they will likely panic and waste time wrestling. Its a good edge to have.

I doubt any attacker will brazenly present their knife and wait for you to draw your own weapon to have a fair match. You're not gonna know they have a knife until you've been stabbed a few times
