" GUUUUUUUUUUMMMMMPPPP!!!!!!....WHY DID YOU PUT THAT WEAPON TOGETHER SO QUICKLY, GUMP?!" You know you have a good drill instructor when he yells at you for doing _too_ good of a job.
When I was in the navy i got in trouble once for doing too good of a job. I was told to never again do my job that well or i would raise the standard for everyone else.
When I was in Boot Camp the Drill Instructors would walk in during class time and ask for 3 volunteers (or the whole platoon would be punished) to be sent to the sand pit and properly hazed for a few minutes. I used to volunteer a lot because I had pretty good cardio, or because I was falling asleep in the class and if caught the whole platoon would be punished. Rex Noct I wish I could. I can't watch anything relating to the Vietnam War. My dad served two tours in that war. He's a retired Chief Petty Officer (E7), same rank as Ermey's. The service people who fought in that war weren't the only ones damaged by it, though. I spent the first 10 years of my life without a dad. He was in Da Nang. He lost a lot of buddies over there, including his CO. When my dad finally walked down the gangplank there were people that spat of him. I was old enough to understand anger, but couldn't understand, why my dad? What did he do? Even over 40 years later, anything that reminds me of that time brings back nightmares. I see different branches of the service mocking one another on here, but mostly, it's in fun. Everyone has a lot of pride in the branch they serve. That's good for morale. What disturbs me is seeing civilians being downright nasty to military and vice versa. As much as is pains me to say it, it's mostly the former. You haven't any idea at all what it's like- to serve or to be the immediate families of those who serve. What you see on the movie screen just barely scratches the surface. The soldiers and sailors who go through boot camp or basic training? (depending on the branch ) They undergo the most heinous, horrific physical, mental and emotional torture imaginable. Why? Because their instructors are teaching them to tolerate it all, to build them up into strong, powerful people who will be able to protect us from threats, foreign and domestic. You should be grateful they signed up and volunteered for this. We could still have the draft. So, please. Stop the infighting. Just say thank you for service. That's all they really want. Well....that and a hug.
ecclestonsangel tell your dad I said thank you for his service. My grandfather served in Vietnam as a Ranger, I believe he was a Major. Until recently, my grandfather wouldn't talk about his experience. He lost many men during the war, some of which were good friends of his.
howard baxter thank you, I will. Tell your granddad the same. My dad still won't talk about it much at all. I can't really blame him. I do blame LBJ for making the troops fight hamstrung and with both hands tied behind their backs. I just hope that devil is rotting in hell where he belongs. It was a horrible, ugly war that was micromanaged by the politicians when they should have kept their noses out of it and allowed it to be the stand-up fight it should have been. I still remember air raid drills from first and second grade. we had to go out in the halls and roll up in a ball. The ol' duck and cover. To this day, I hate anything that even remotely sounds like an air raid siren.
I did not know who R. Lee was when I first watched Full Metal Jacket, I just knew that whoever he was he was the real deal. His military bearing, the way he called cadence, the manner and style in which he spoke to the recruits were all tell tail signs that he was no actor but the genuine thing. Those nuances are recognizable by those that went through basic training and no actor can truly duplicate those nuances. That’s why he was so good in that roll, he was not acting, he was doing his job.
100% correct. The "only" thing not realistic about that part of FMJ is that in "real" Marine Corps Boot Camp there are 3 drill instructors, not just one. -Semper Fi
R.I.P Gunnery Sargent Hartman You are an inspiration to us future marines, you entertained us all as well as me when I was a child watching Full Metal Jacket, you be sorely missed by us all who hold you dear.
Gunnery Sergeant Hartman (Real Name “R. Lee Ermey”) Retired as a Staff Sergeant, but was later Honorably Promoted to Gysgt after he Retired. I believe he is the First and Only Marine to be Promoted Post-Retirement
I'm sure recruits don't get to hear all the good shit like this anymore since we're becoming a pansy nation with all the PC shit and folks crying and can't take the heat. I went through in 2006 and we got smoked for over an hour because someone simply asked about "stress cards" being issued 😂😂😂
They nailed boot camp. I went to Army Infantry OSUT (One Station Unit Training, Basic and Advanced training all rolled up into 16 weeks of pure misery) and the only difference was that the drill sergeants or instructors aren't allowed to hit recruits anymore. Everything else was spot-on.
Because he was allowed to improvise was the reason he was accurate. Stanley Kubrick had to stop the cameras to have DI Hartman explain what "reach around" meant! HAHAHA TRUE!
R. Lee Was great in the Boys in Company C also. And he wasn't psychotic; it isn't easy making Marines. You have to break away the misconceptions you are taught in your first life. His portrayal of a drill instructor was spot on. Except you usually have several of them to contend with.
Ermey was initially hired as a technical consultant for the boot camp phase of FMJ. The director & writers asked him for lines that could be used from the character DI Hartman & was asked to deliver them in a manner that was done during that era. Ermey so impressed them that he was given the role of SDI Hartman. The rest is history.
R. Lee Ermey actually wasn't even cast in the role originally, he was an adviser. And breaking with the directors normal way of making movies most of his dialog was ad-libbed.
Great list, especially with mentioning R. Lee Emery as #1. The basic training scenes were so intense in "Full Metal Jacket," with the drill sergeant taking on the future Detective Robert Goren. I'm also glad you included Jack Webb's "The D.I."
Has no one seen boys seen "The Boys in Company C." Came out in 1978. R. Lee Emrey is a bad ass DI in that film. Didn't have the screen time as he did in Full Metal, but was still pretty intense. A very good movie I remember seeing in the theater. Stars Andrew Stevens who was just a kid. See it, you'll enjoy.
R. Lee Ermey did the Drill Instructor role first in a movie called "The Boys In Company C''. He and this short Mexican gentleman, who was the Senior Drill Instructor, were top shelf in their performance. You could see that their role was just an extension of their service experience and made you dread ever getting on the wrong side of them or a Drill Instructor period.
Staff Sargent Loyce is a short video here on CZcams which cover The Boys in Company C's bootcamp phase. Excellent example of the time they spend with their recruits. Look it up for an amazing performance.
Sgt. Gunnery is the greatest man to ever represent the love and devotion of our troops. He spent a lifetime making people laugh and encouraging our troops for the sacrifices they have made. RIP RL Ermey Gunnery Sargent!! He literally gives me goosebumps!!
Correction at 2:15: A sergeant is a non-commissioned officer who is enlisted. Major Payne is not a Marine Corp sergeant, as Major is an officer rank not enlisted. And that's a fact Jack!!
@@Avis_Victoriae because most of the time I'm the ROTC program they have an officer and an enlisted in the movie the enlisted man was to old to drill so major Payne did it himself
Having gone through the process during that same time period (the mid 70's) I can tell you that Lee Ermy did the closest thing to what i experienced over those 12 weeks at San Diego...it looked nearly identical to my personal experience to becoming a Marine.
The amazing thing about R. Lee Ermey is that he was brought on to Full Metal Jacket as a consultant for the actor who was originally supposed to play Gunnary Sgt Hartman, but they liked Ermey's improvisation so much that they just decided to give him the part.
I'm here to tell you all ,That life as you know it, Has ended , So you may as well all go into town tonight, Rub you pathetic little Peckers up against you lady friends because at 06:00 your ass is mine, Where is your bunk!!!!!
Gunny Highway (as played by Eastwood) was not a drill instructor. He was the SNCOIC of a small Recon Detachment. Although he was drill instructor-esque, he was not a drill instructor in Heartbreak Ridge.
It doesn't branch the two... a Sergeant Major (no hyphen) is a higher level of sergeant... like Master Sergeant. I am referring to the Marine Corps Major (identified clearly as such through the insignia on his BDU) that they called a Sergeant
KG7YTS. Even so, Sergeant is before it, which I believe makes him a Sergeant and not a major. All forms of Sergeant's can qualify. Staff Sergeant, Gunnery Sergeant, Master Sargeant and even a Sergeant Major. Though let it be said you have a point.
Nathan Goetchius he’s an 0-4 which is a commissioned officer. A sergeant major is an E-9 and would never ever be a drill instructor, highest i saw on the depot was a E-7 Gunnery Sergeant
what codes are you using? is that a us only code since the nato ones are different. the nato codes are OF1-10 for officers and OR1-9 for privates, corporals and sergeants
Correction: Major Payne is a MAJOR not at sergeant. The movie "Jarhead" is about MARINES not the Army. Why didn't you show MSGT. Waters from "A Soldiers Story" when he was chewing his platoons ass❓
SSG Thomas from "Tigerland" (2000) could be honorable mention. Advanced infantry training for Vietnam War. Also, Major Reisman from "The Dirty Dozen" (1967) served a Drill Sergeant type of role when being ordered to train 12 soldiers that were on death row in prison.
Gunny Highway was neither a DI nor a DS, he was a seasoned combat veteran who was the new Platoon Sergeant for a group of misfits who were already out of basic training.
"AHHH! That's a warface! Now let me see your warface!" "AAAAAH!" "BULLSHIT YOU DIDN'T CONVINCE ME, LET ME SEE YOUR REAL WARFACE" "AAAAAHHHHHHHH!" "You don't scare me! Work on it!" "Sir, yes sir!"
He was a commandant for a jrotc program after being honorably discharged from the marine corps. They also call a marine corps drill instructor an army drill sergeant in this video. They don't know shit about the military.
R. Lee Ermey was a consultant for "An Officer and a Gentleman" and coached Louis Gossett Jr for his role as Sgt Foley. That is part of the reason many of the insults you see Foley use are the same insults that were later used by Hartman in "Full Metal Jacket". So not only is Ermey ranked number one on the list, he played a major role in Gossett being ranked at number 3
I enjoyed being a Drill Sergeant in the US Army. The hours were long and was extremely tough on my family due to always working. I was lucky to work with some other great Drill Sergeants. The majority of the soldiers were great too.

The easiest number #1 to predict.
Much easier than the Top 10 Anime Gunslingers, and that was also an easy pick.
Top 10 Shark Movies
Is that you John Wayne? Is this me?
They nailed boot camp. I went to Army Infantry OSUT (One Station Unit Training, Basic and Advanced training all rolled up into 16 weeks of pure misery) and the only difference was that the drill sergeants or instructors aren't allowed to hit recruits anymore. Everything else was spot-on.
Dr. Evil WHO SAID THAT
Payne is not a sergeant, he is a major.
Sergeant major
James Maxton Sergeant Major, Sergeant, and Major are all different ranks, because Majors are officers and Sergeants and Sergeant Majors are enlisted.
Ti Ha E-9
Guys he wears oakleafs he is not a Sargent
Please I’m sorry for my spellinh
Was there ever a doubt about who’s gonna be #1? Rip R. Lee Ermey
May he Rest in Peace...
beernpizzalover that you John Wayne? Is this me?
Never a doubt
i don't think so
Not at all!😊
There should be one name on this list. R. Lee Emery didn't have to "portray" a D.I., he was the real deal Watching him was a blast from my past.
Yep, been there heard that.
At least full metal jacket is accurate to drill instructors
Because he was allowed to improvise was the reason he was accurate. Stanley Kubrick had to stop the cameras to have DI Hartman explain what "reach around" meant! HAHAHA TRUE!
Max Purtell Because R. Was an actual drill seargent
Yeah
When I was deployed to Iraq this was the most popular movie to spout off quotes from, “choke yourself!” was one of them.
Well, R. Lee Ermey was a DI before becoming an actor.
Jarhead was the marines not the Army
No one portrays a DI better than R Lee. Semper Fi gunny.
R. Lee Was great in the Boys in Company C also. And he wasn't psychotic; it isn't easy making Marines. You have to break away the misconceptions you are taught in your first life. His portrayal of a drill instructor was spot on. Except you usually have several of them to contend with.
Correct. -Semper Fi
God rest your soul, R. Lee Ermey. Oorah, marine! Your watch is over. You are releaved.
-Video about Drill Sergeants
-Puts Drill Instructor in thumbnail
#TRIGGERED
Betwixt Acerbus Lol!! Yeah.. Some shit you gotta let slide with civilians..
sadsurferx NO! SCREW WATCHMOJO! :P THEY NEED TO GET THEIR SHIT RIGHT AND KNOW DRILL INSTRUCTORS ARE QUITE DIFFERENT.
Betwixt Acerbus Isn't WatchMojo based out of Canada? lol who knows how they do things up there.
Oh my God, yes.
Drill Instructors Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday.
Church on Sunday, then at 11:59:59 BOOM back to start the competition
When non-military people critique military people. Classic.
airek787 then pulp fiction, Vincent Vegas death would be number one
airek787 when military people think they are above everyone else!
CLASSIC!!!
Civilians will never know the truth of sadistic fuckers who become drills and take up the round brown
You tell em' Bro !
I'm not at all soldier material so I'll keep my trap shut.
Clint Eastwood in Heartbreak Ridge should have made the list. And Louis Gossett Officer and a Gentlemen should have been number 2 on the list
Gossett completelly failed there,by me.
Clint Eastwood in that movie was not a Drill Sargent. He was a Platoon Leader. There is a difference.
Clint Eastwood wasn't a DI in that movie. He was a Plt Sgt. Big difference.
Even if he Wasn t a D I
He should have gotten an Honorable Mention.
JMO.
I love the scene where he catches up with "Stitch" Jones where he rips out his earring and says "You owe me",
Ermey was initially hired as a technical consultant for the boot camp phase of FMJ.
He learned it all while being a real Marine Drill Instructor at Camp Pendleton Cal.
This list is absolutely pointless, we all know for a fact that R. Lee Ermey is NUMBER #1!!!!!!!
Felix Nolasco and we lost him to pneumonia
Felix Nolasco what about the other 9
1. Chef: Total Drama Island
Thot Patrol don’t think so tho
Yuuuuuuuppp
Keith Shardis from Attack on titan
Yeah no
Would be cool to see in this list but Hartman HAS to be no 1
He was also great in "the siege on firebase gloria"
Staff Sargent Loyce is a short video here on CZcams which cover The Boys in Company C's bootcamp phase. Excellent example of the time they spend with their recruits. Look it up for an amazing performance.
Gunnery Sgt. Aquilla Senior DI.
It begs the question; Why did they send an officer to do a Sergeant's job?
@@Avis_Victoriae because most of the time I'm the ROTC program they have an officer and an enlisted in the movie the enlisted man was to old to drill so major Payne did it himself
@@scpfoundation4717 Ahhhh! That actually makes sense. Thanks for telling me
@@Avis_Victoriae your welcome Edgar the Raven is such a classic for me btw
DI's are enlisted, you would never see a major in ANY service training recruits.
Having gone through the process during that same time period (the mid 70's) I can tell you that Lee Ermy did the closest thing to what i experienced over those 12 weeks at San Diego...it looked nearly identical to my personal experience to becoming a Marine.
me too 64-68
Thank you both for you service,
Shipmates.
100% correct. MCRD 1977 - Semper Fi
Starship Trooper's Zim is the same guy who does the voice for Mr Krabs in SpongeBob Squarepants. =D
thats Lex Luthor to u
The one and only, Clancy Brown.
The amazing thing about R. Lee Ermey is that he was brought on to Full Metal Jacket as a consultant for the actor who was originally supposed to play Gunnary Sgt Hartman, but they liked Ermey's improvisation so much that they just decided to give him the part.
Stanley Kubrick definitely made the right choice to give R. Lee Ermey the part of Hartman
RIP Gunny
A little obscure, but Regimental Sergeant Major Sandy Young in The Wild Geese should get a mention.
As should Telly Savalas' Sergeant-Major Dagineau from "Beau Geste."
You missed Clint Eastwood in Heartbreak Ridge.
Neither was Major Payne. I've never seen a senior officer training recruits anywhere else.
axnyslie I was wondering the same.
I have drank more beer pissed more blood banged more quiff and whooped more as than all you pansies combined
I think Jack Webb got honorable mention. He was not comedic, but he was a marine and portrayed a DI that was acceptable for film in the 1950's.
I like how half of these are drill instructors from the Marine Corps
What's the Army coming to?
All drill instructors are from the Marine Corps, th Army doesn't have drill instructors.
Sara Llewellyn "Right, Sergeant-Major marching up and down the square!"
A Major can't be a drill Sergeant
KG7YTS There's a rank in the military that branches the two. Sergeant-Major
Waters from "A Soldiers Story" when he was chewing his platoons ass❓
ghostbear200123 I expect Better from Watchmojo
MSGT Waterrs was an Army pussy, didn't have what it takes to be a Marine.
This video should have had a lot more editing
FUCK YOU JARHEAD
R. Lee Ermey was, is, and always will be the best. Rest In Peace Marine. Job Done.
Rest in peace gunny you will be missed
naruto94 cool that you John Wayne? Is this me?
Rest in peace R. Lee Ermey
they should have shown the full knife bit from Starship Troopers. That's one way to tell a kid off
PRIVATE JOKER ARE YOU TRYING TO OFFEND ME?!
@06:33 Jarhead is a nickname for Marines, not the Army.
nice list but you forgot one man
Gunnery Sergent Highway from Heartbreak Ridge
Didn't see him anywhere on the list
Gunny Highway wasn't a drill instructor.
DyenamicFilms the title says drill sergents btw. and who cares if its the army or the marines
Gunny Highway was neither a DI nor a DS, he was a seasoned combat veteran who was the new Platoon Sergeant for a group of misfits who were already out of basic training.
0621 Hertz still had to work with them
The title says Drill Sergeant and Gunny Highway wasn't one, no matter how you look at it.
I totally agree that Gunnery Sergeant Hartman should be #1.
Jesus Soltero that you John Wayne? Is this me?
Love how he said “ it really makes you think twice about joining the army” talking about jarhead😂
F. Lee Ermey...Oscar worthy performance!
GREENBADGER03 R.I.P.
Who the hell else could be number 1?? RIP Gunny
Drill instructor = marine corps
Drill Sargent = army
Sergeant
R. Lee Ermey is my favorite. I wish he was still alive today. All respect for him. He's strict, and funny.
Rest in Peace, Gunny Sergeant, R. Lee Ermey. 1944 - 2018
"AHHH! That's a warface! Now let me see your warface!"
"AAAAAH!"

"You don't scare me! Work on it!"
"Sir, yes sir!"
NOBODY HUH?
Joker: sir I said it sir!
I literally don't know that one part, sorry
It's ok lol
Pvt. Joker why did you join my beloved corps?
Sweet Mary mother of Joseph
It’s Bonnie and his toy bayonet!
*laughter inside of me*
how can "Major" Payne be a "Sergeant"
Right, he was a commandant. The title of the Major Payne after all.
Christopher Lancaster Sergeant Major maybe?
He was a commandant for a jrotc program after being honorably discharged from the marine corps. They also call a marine corps drill instructor an army drill sergeant in this video. They don't know shit about the military.
Cause he's a Drill
Just Sami He’s not wearing an E-9’s stripes. He’s wearing an O-4’s gold oak leaves.
RIP Sargent Hartman You’ll Never Be Forgotten
There's no such thing as a PSYCHOTIC DRILL SERGEANT; their job is to MAKE YOU or BREAK YOU, on your path to becoming a soldier.
That's the bullshit excuse of someone who doesn't like taking responsibility for his fuck ups
@@Icebergeification Suuuurrreee
“Done drill sergeant!” *”GUMPPP!!!”*
R. Lee Armey better be #1.
Hes obviously the best and a legend
RIP Gunney. 🇺🇸🇺🇸🗽🇺🇸🗽
I know he's not in movies. But what about Sergeant Slaughter from WWE?
Alec Willey STFU
RIP R. Lee Ermey died April 15 2018 we will miss your screaming about jelly donuts in footlockers we will miss we hope you are in a better place now
After watching Whiplash, JK Simmons would make a badass drill Sargent!
Jarhead? Joining the Army? Oh my, you best fix yourself, watchMojo
I enjoyed being a Drill Sergeant in the US Army. The hours were long and was extremely tough on my family due to always working. I was lucky to work with some other great Drill Sergeants. The majority of the soldiers were great too.
Thanks from a Marine!!!
R. Lee Ermey deserves two spots on this list. He was also Sgt. Loyce in "The Boys in Company C"
