Common misconception: "the planet doesn't want them there". As miller said in previous seasons: the protomolecule doesn't care about us unless we get in the way.
Miller also said he just started turning things on on the planet seeing what they'd do.
Then an unnatural looking, very regular chain of islands start putting out a ton of heat. There's as many islands as there are moons. The moons also are spaced in an unnatural regular pattern around the planet.
Then one island overheats and explodes, and a few moments later one of the moons starts melting.
And Naomi says the explosion has a similar signature as a reactor failure or fusion drive blowing up.
And then seconds after the explosion the physics of fusion stop working.
This all isn't coincidence. As usual its simply the protomolecule reacting. All the 1.5 billion year reactors on the planet were turned on by miller. Then one has a failure probably simply due to it's insane age and blows up. They're linked to the moons somehow in their power generation (seen in miller's protomolecule visions of the planet). Since one reactor failed this has consequences for the one moon its linked too. Why we don't know but the moon starts melting. And then to prevent further reactor failures the protomolecule reacts again by simply stopping fusion from working.
Nothing the protomolecule does really has anything to do with the humans on the planet. It's just systems turning on and safety systems kicking in after a catastrophic system failure. "The protomolecule doesn't care about us anymore than we care about the ant hills we pave over." This is just as true in everything that's going on on the planet... It doesn't care about the humans on the surface or in orbit.

Avasarala truly believes if she loses, Gao will be too loose with safety rules in exploring the protomolecule planets and end up killing humanity. So she's playing for higher stakes than just winning back her office.
1. She didn't get Marco
2. She lost a bunch of Marines, and...
3. ...the belt will think Earth just killed a bunch of innocent belters, rallying more people to Marco's cause.
Meanwhile on Ilus, a nice little thing which was explained in the book was that the compound exuded by those slugs wasn't intended as a defense. It's just slime that particular native lifeform uses for locomotion, but because their biology is so radically different from our own, what's an innocuous chemical compound to them is a simple but deadly pulmonary-paralytic neurotoxin for us. Don't think it's a spoiler to say that much.
This episode reminds me of 2020. First, there's an explosion. Then an earthquake. Then a shock wave. Then a tsunami. Then blindness. Then Doom Slugs.

The significant difference between Amos and Murtry is that Amos realizes his moral compass may be off and so relies on the "truly good people" he knows to provide guidance while Murtry does not care that his moral compass is off as long as he is accomplishing "his mission." I keep equating Murtry with George Armstrong Custer.
Amos told us all we needed to know when he said Murtry "had all the right excuses" but really he only kills because it makes his dick hard.
The writers are being very clear in their references to history. The inners oppress and exploit the belt at every turn. They used the protomolecule to commit genocide on the belters and will never allow them any sovereignty. Historically those conditions inevitably lead to terrorism, which colonial forces use to punish the population disproportionately.
I used to plan my day out to watch TV - now I plan it out to watch people watching TV. lol

This season started out as a Western, but it just veered sharply back into science fiction territory.
An attempt to colonize a planet where life has evolved in such a way as to have fairly compatible biochemistry to Earth's is an appallingly bad idea.
Not because of the local versions of dinosaurs or lions -- the weapons they carry can handle any big nasty predators, without a problem.
No, the problem is all the stuff that decides the human body offers a great habitat. The algae-analog that lives in their eyes is just an example of the the sort of thing that one would expect from such a situation.
That's why it's such a really bad idea to let people start to settle, until after a science team has completed a survey, and discovered this sort of stuff.
In season 3, Amos said he hadn't felt fear since he was 5. We saw a glimpse of that resurfacing here in this episode. Gotta wonder how he and the whole group will handle that
The slugs aren't protomolecule related. they are climbing the walls because the flood forced them out of their underground habitat because they are trying not to drown

And the show it's just warming up.
The underground area isn't that tiny at all. As said briefly in the show, and described in the books, the ruins and tunnels extend underground for miles and miles. They just haven't been explored much. Holden, the belters and murty's people just decide to stay close and near each other because it's supposedly safer. They don't know what they'll find in the enormous alien ruins, so they decide to stay close in the parts they know.
But all know very well the ruins are huge, they're just reluctant to go further in.
I feel like the debate over whether or not Holden's telepathic connection to the protomolecule is a blessing or a curse represents a soldier vs scientist mentality. Holden represents the soldier mentality, a very grounded and utilitarian mindset, compounded by his strong set of values and sense of morality. He grew up reading Don Quixote before bed, dreaming of knighthood and chivalry. Put simply, he views the protomolecule with caution at best, and terror at worst. His first exposure to the stuff was watching as it slowly and painfully killed everyone on Eros, and then converting their corpses into machinery to turn Eros into the Solar System's biggest bomb. He doesn't care about the scientific possibilities of it and the beings who created it, so long as it doesn't hurt innocent people or the ones he cares for the most, and the only gods he's interested in are the ones he already serves: Duty, Justice, and Honor. The doctor, on the other hand, represents the scientist mentality, a very curious and imaginative mindset, compounded by a thirst for knowledge. She views the technology left behind by the Precursors with awe and fascination, her first exposure being the sight of magnificent ruins and artifacts left behind on a world that had been dead for eons. While concern for her safety and that of others are not outside of her concern, the scientific possibilities are incredibly tempting to her, and the chance to meet beings who might as well be Gods to humanity even more so.
If you can find a book called "Don't tell Mum I work on the rigs - she thinks I'm a piano player in a whorehouse" by Paul Carter, give it a read. It's a memoir of his time working for oil companies. In one chapter he talks about the private security oil companies have to hire. Murtry is not an exaggeration and is definitely not the exception. People like him are very real and are more common than anyone is prepared to admit.
Also, in the books, Katoa's remaining family are part of the colonists which adds an element the show lacks.
Also strongly recommend the book "Blackwater" by Jeremy Scahill. Holy crap... the things they did and got away with.
Get drunk at a Christmas party, go wandering out in the Green Zone and end up murdering one of the Iraqi Vice President's bodyguards at a checkpoint? No biggie! We'll smuggle you out of the country to avoid criminal prosecution, you'll face no punishment beyond the termination of your contract, and in less than a year you'll be working another US government security contract in another country! (Andrew Moonen - and that's just one example)
@watashi Maybe they thought it was too coincidental, like the same with Havelock being on the Barbapicola. Thousands of planets, millions of belters, and they just happen to run into people they have a direct connection with? I don't know, I would have preferred they kept them as Katoa's family, but I didn't mind them giving Lucia Basia's storyline. I thought Lucia was more interesting than Basia in the books anyway.
Fangtorn I tend to agree. I just hate that they cut out most of that story line. I would have loved to see more of what went on in orbit.

Steve's reactions are the exact same for every show and it cracks me up because I'm not sure he realizes. "Fuuuckk duuude" " this shit is crazy" "what the fuck?" "This is insane" yet he gets to the conversation part of the reaction and different and insightful.
I think the nail was hit on the head when Steven mentioned that the show and its characters motivations is supposed to create conversation and keep things in the grey area. Situations like what the show portrays are not supposed to be simple and to the point. There's deliberate complexity and it's fully intended by the authors.
I think the trap we as viewers fall into sometimes is we try to view characters in a binary lens of good or evil. Maybe it's because of what we grew up watching or other things we currently watch. That's not this show. Just because someone doesn't vibe with the characters we like that have been crowned as the "good guys" doesn't make them an immediate "bad guy".
My main objection is I appreciate consistency when praising or attacking characters. I'll admit I'm not perfect when it comes to that. But I think it's fair to the Murtry character to not attack him for the same qualities we might/might not enjoy out of Amos or any other comparable character. There's a reason they had that discussion between them a couple episodes ago. And there have been small quotes and sayings from both that in my view, were breaking the fourth wall, to maybe ask viewers to question themselves on why certain things are ok for some characters and not for others.
For instance, if that group of Belters were overheard plotting to kill Amos and his crew, and Amos shot him point blank in the head, would you question the action? Or does it get a pass because of who does the shooting? It's an interesting discussion and i much prefer it to grouping people as bad guys and good guys like it's 80's wrestling (not a diss Steven, I know you're a fan, lol. I love 80's wrestling too).
Have you considered that we are the alien life interrupting/disrupting native life in Illus? :P
Marco is a very interesting character who is being underestimated by nearly everyone at this point. Klas Ashford got him absolutely spot on when he was being judged by the belters. Christjen sees him as a threat though. Letting him go was a really bad idea.
I get what Steven is saying about Murtry but the thing about it is, Yes he's is using those deaths as cover for what he's doing if the belter's had not blew up the landing pad he would have pushed them in some other way to make them act, blowing up the pad was just gravy for him in the fact he had a ready made excuse to go on the offensive against them, It's his job and he's a killer just like Amos said so even if the bleter's hadn't done what they did he would have still found a way to get to the point their at now...................................... On a side note I doubt he even really cares about those that died and it gave him all the excuse he needed.

Left out the fact that "mother" is a murderer that killed two dozen people. She planted the explosives, she detonated the explosives. Her "intent" hardly matters when over 20 people are killed by her direct and purposeful actions.

The thing about all the deadly creatures are the settlers finding... it's not just protomolecule stuff, but one of the great ci-fi's examples in this serie. Inhabitable planet doesn't mean harmless. It is like the experience for the first europeans in America or Australia. A lot of bugs, reptiles, plants and other small animals happened to be venomous at some level, and they only found out after somebody touched it, was attacked by, or simply eaten it. colonization of other worlds would turn very dangerous because we will not only have no knowledge at all about their species, but because there will be nobody to tell us "get away from that".

I would say that the difference between him and Amos, is Amos doesn't want to kill people. He just has no problem doing it.
Morty there, he is cold blooded, and won't take an alternative to violence. Amos will do what maximizes his survival, but not at the cost of innocent lives.
Exactly Christian was in a lose-lose situation, which demonstrates she has to make a decision either way, even when it hurts her, politically and publicly.

Lmao. ...and, welcome to the death slugs! So, there's a line in the book that's just so Holden. We've had lightning, melting moons disintegrating the shuttle, spinning protomolecule structures tearing up 4km wide swaths of the planet, thermonuclear explosions causing earthquakes, 200kph winds and an ocean-creating tsunami, fusion ceasing to work making it a dead cert that all 3 ships will eventually fall out of orbit and burn up in the atmosphere, blindness-causing micro-organisms and now death slugs that kill you instantly if they touch you.
Someone tells Holden there's no more coffee, and he says, "No coffee? This is a terrible, terrible planet." Makes me laugh every time I think about it.

I'm psyched for the next 3 episodes (and don't expect the tension to let up any time soon) but sad that we gotta wait for season 5.

There were settlers arriving on Illus before Murtry and his Royal Charter Energy expedition (just as there were indigenous people in North America before Columbus arrived). In 1492 King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain give money and a royal charter Columbus to secure gold and other wealth for the crown and promised a percentage to Columbus. Now think of Murtry and "ROYAL CHARTER Energy" granted rights in New Terra by the U.N. Murtry is part of an expedition sent to explore a "New World" and make claims to anything he finds for Royal Charter Energy. He is promised a percentage of the haul (in this case lithium, and in Murtry's mind, the tech of a dead advanced civilization). But some Belters got there first and started mining the lithium before Murtry gets there. You get the parallels. Fundamental question: by what right does the U.N. (or the King of Spain) give rights to anyone on Illus (North America)? What do first settlers face - thirst, hunger, disease (slugs, eye infections), natural disasters (earthquake, floods), natives (the protomolecule civilization). Blood-soaked gold rush. Food for thought.
Just a quick correction it’s not a force field around the planet the moon that he said it was burning was actually firing weapons at the shuttle the moons surrounding the planets are a planetary defense weapons platforms The reason they were burning is because it was the first time firing in 1 billion years

TheGorignak No the reason the moons are all in one straight line going in a circle around the planet is they are the planetary defense system The island that exploded was a Fusion generator and when it exploded the failsafe system activated and the planetary defenses came online that’s why it destroyed the shuttle they basically fired high powered energy cannons that’s why it was incinerated
I do not think that is all the moons did, the lightning which was doing something on the surface was a superposition of 13 bolts, one for each moon. I think whatever the planet did the moons were vital in doing it.
My personal theory is they created lithium out of energy for harvest by the giant machines.
Matisaro When Holden removed the route he completed the circuit and turned the planet back on the energy bolts were a start up sequence the problem is the reactors were turned off for so long that they were faulty and one of them exploded that’s on the planetary defense system turned on
@@danielmcclure8569 Based on what? I am pretty sure that is not in the book. The investigator has been turning all sorts of switches on. The root turned the machine on and the generator could have blown from the damage the missle caused leading to a chain reaction. Do you have a page number or other citation?
The lightning bolts hit equidistant and at the same interval and the planet has the richest lithium deposit ever discovered all along the surface and the giant triangles clearly were strip mining.
I mean, actions must have consequences, that's just how it is. I think there needed to be consequences for Belters blowing up the pad.
But this whole Ilus situation is purely consequence of Earth and Mars destroying Ganymede and failing to pay for their actions. The Belters on Ilus are those who lost their homes on Ganymede and no one would let them dock/settle anywhere.That's on the UN and MCRN directly, and those belters rightfully took the initiative by choosing not to be forced into death via starvation/exposure, and instead colonizing a planet. The UN doubled down on their failure to own up to their wrongdoings by sending in Murtry's corp to kick the belters out and stake a claim for the lithium there in the UN's name (which that opening scene in the pod with Murtry bragging about kicking belters off of previous claims and getting compensated was meant to illustrate as not a one-off, but a pattern, thus the hostility to begin with). No one can blame people for choosing to live and survive instead of dying due to the greed and prejudice of inner-planetary politicians and corporations. If the belters left that planet, they were dead in the water, because nowhere was taking up the task to let them settle anywhere else, so it was Ilus or death. There's no real choice in that.
So I mean, yeah, consequences for destroying the pad need to happen. But if it's going to be done fairly, that would mean Murtry's corp/UN would have to pay for the damage they did and leave the planet for the belters, and then take those involved in the explosion to trial, allowing the rest to keep on keeping on and officially stake a claim to the place.
Yeah, Murtry is a bad person.
I didn't want to spoil anything in my previous comment, he is paid a bonus if he gets rid of the belters.
I personally believe that when oppression is involved the powerful have the agency, the belters truly are on their last chance and have had everything taken from them. Charters should not mean anything and they do not get a fair shake so I understand why they fought back with violence.
The show did not do as good of a job as the book in explaining why he was bad early on. He has the one conversation about cheating belters out of a big score but it is hard to hear over the roaring of the landing so his motives come off as less scummy in the show but I am glad this episode really crystallizes it.
but he is just doing a job. If he wasn't doing it someone else would be. He's just a pawn.
@@philmarston9078 Doing the job would have included arresting the offenders and taking them to Earth for trial. Murtry used his position as an excuse to murder and terrorize the belters.

The ambiguity over who's right and who's wrong was absolutely intentional, as that was also in the book. What hasn't been addressed though, is this "Charter" issued by the U.N. They can tell a company that they have U.N. approval, but the U.N. doesn't own ANY of the 1,300 worlds on the other side of the gates.
You'll keep going on about them being in this structure like it was such a stupid thing to do, but if they hadn't gone there they would all have died in the massive flood. Death or take your chances in the misterious structure were the only choices so it seems pretty obvious they did the only thing they could do to still be alive right now.
Maybe Avasarala's illustrating that the only way to be effective is in an unelected, less visible role. Soon as you sit at the top desk, you get every idiot in the world pushing and pulling you.
I don't think the eyeball bugs have been shown to do more than blind you. And they are not blue.
I would recommend reading this season's book more then any other season so far. Really adds a lot more to the story and the characters
Their aggression is fueled by fear. And Dr. Okoye has rudimentary medical training, however, she is NOT a physician by training or inclination but a research biologist who is attempting to apply what she is learning as she goes. Lucia (in orbit) was the closest thing that they had to a physician.
I like how Steven doesn't dismiss the Earthers' perspectives immediately like most people do when watching this season. Also, I miss Havelock being part of this story.
The Murtry-Amos comparison is interesting because we didnt really like Amos to begin with either. He had to show us some vulnerability. Will we get that from Murtry?
where they were there was no water but when the ship talked about the islands on the other side of the planet that was the clue You can't have an island unless there's water. ]:P
A few episodes ago it was mentioned there was large bodies of water/oceans because they talked about the lightning ending at and heat buildup on the chain of islands on the other side of the planet.
We can and *should* understand why bad guys do what they do.
Murtrey is the villain of the show at this point. That doesn't mean we don't understand his motives. If we don't, they're psychopaths. Most villains can justify their actions. The Snells can on Ozark. The FBI agents can. The cartel can.
But Murtry is a smarmy asstwat. And he represents the US/imperial presence going in and owning third world bodies (colonialism). That's what is at play here.
In the books, Chrisjen Avarsarela was not Secretary-General of the UN during the events of Cibola Burn.
I think they needed to give her more to do to give her screen time on the show. That part was ok with me.
Thing to remember with Bobbies new boss is that he's a police detective. He needed Bobby to get access to the naval yard storage. Now imagine... :D

Murtry's job isn't really (or simply) security. His job, his mission, was to take the Belters grubstake away from them. He also stated up front that this wasn't his first time. He stated that as his mission the first time we met him, and that mission ultimately came from Avasarala, who the show displays as having the sole discretion about how, when, whether, and by whom the Ring planets get colonized.
The buck actually stops with Avasarala, who gave the planet to RCE after the Ganymede refugees proved the planet was survivable and valuable. But as Steven said, "History tells a story." People always factor history into their responses, and Earth has a consistently bloody history with Belters.
I do agree with the proposition of "understand but not agree," which I learned long ago as, "You have to look at the game from your opponent's side of the board if you want to anticipate his moves." Avasarala consistently fails to do that with Belters...in her contempt, she continually underestimates them. One of the first things we saw about Avasarala was her ability to completely change her direction when faced with new facts...which she seems unable to do now that the public's eyes are upon her.
"Oh, my God. Eeyew, eeyew, eeyew!" Funny, I said the same thing.
Blind, claustrophobia and killer slugs. Yeah I think I'll pass.
Seeing you guys reacting to this show in my recommended videos constantly was enough to probe me to watch it, just finished season 4 and I love it! I'm interested in the politics of the inner planets and all but I feel like a lot of Avasarala's scenes recently have just been her handing out one liners with a lot of swear words. I know this show is based on novels which I hope to read so I'm trusting the show to give her more involved scenes again xD
The books are fantastic. Lots of additional details. I'm quite surprised at how much of the books made it into the show. Some differences but I think the changes are improvements.

Book 1 went partway into s2 (Eros hitting Venus), book 2 went into s3 (protokatoa, the thing leaving Venus), book 3 ends with the all the rings opening at the end of s3, book 4 is all s4.
Possible mild book spoilers:
The three things that I really disliked about S4.
1. Avasarala’s plot line (and Arjun). I understand that they had to keep her involved, but I hate how they portrayed her in S4. In the books she’s this wise, pessimistic and condescending character, who is always in control and who always has Earth’s best interest at heart.
2. Naomi. In the books she is one of the most brilliant engineers in the system. They should have continued with S1 “does anyone need a back rub” Naomi. It was her idea and design that attached a tow line to the Barbapiccola. It’s also her program that enables upcoming rail gun shenanigans. Hopefully they allow her to really shine in S5.
3. Ilus. I understand the CGI constraints, but I really wish that they could have done a better job portraying the first alien world. The planet really was just an ancient ghost town, overrun with local flora/fauna.

you both seem to never mention that all the Belters responsible for the attack being an "attack" and not just "destruction of property" have already been murder without a trial. The only one still alive is the one woman (cant remember her name) and she actually kind of saved lives by detonating the bomb early.... i know how that sounds. The others wanted to kill them, she was the only one trying to back out after the ship showed up early. she should get a trial, and not just be murdered by some douchebag.

About disgusting alien fauna...the show saved the CGI from the lizard who hunted food by throwing its stomach out (from the book).
I was so looking forward to the mimic lizards. Had to settle for Coop describing them while he was getting patched up after the metal slasher-bugs attack.

One thing that annoys me about the Belter accents is how uniform they are. Besides Ashford they all kind of sound the same. I think Belters should have a wide variety of accents.
I know Chrisjen is under stress but I miss the old Chrisjen who swore creatively and strategically to make a point and as a show of power. Here she just comes off as cranky. I'm just afraid that going overboard with the swearing will drown out the real gems.

Chrisjen was always in control in the past and used the cursing as a personal weapon. Now, things are falling apart around her. The excessive cursing seems in character to me.

12:30. I feel like General McCord has presented Crisjen with a binary lose-lose scenario. Destroy the Pizzouza and with it, any evidence to suggest it was justified (just like the Sojourner), or put an insertion team aboard in an inherently unstable situation that could go sideways at any moment, even due to unknown circumstances completely outside of her control. I really, really want a door number three here.
24:50. I relly hate being right sometimes. Crisjen got punked by Marko. Might have been a mining nuke in the cargo bay, or a Melba-bomb with a deadman switch held by some OPA loyalist. The bait (Marko's face) may have been planted, or Marko may have been there and just put himself on the float anytime before the raid started. Boom. And the UN has egg on its face, _again._
Recall what Marko said to the OPA tribunal in judgement over him? "...I will sit on my hands like a good little boy until the Inners break the treaty, _which they _*_will_* ..." The Pizzouza was Marko _manipulating_ Crisjen into breaking the treaty so that he would be free to act.
Re: Illus wildlife. Wrong color for Protomolecule, wrong behavior. Killing & blinding the humans doesn't seem to advance any "Work" that might be afoot here. But, alien planet, yo? Aggressive, hyper-competitive critters doing survival stuff. The green-eye is monopolizing a new food supply, and the slugs are just trying to keep away from the water. Probably got in the same way the roots did, and started sliming their way to higher ground, right up the walls. But slime is not the most reliable climbing aid.
Door number 3 is "stand down and find a better opportunity to track down Marco". The problem is that Chrisjen was too tunnel-visioned on trying to come back from the twin disasters of how the debate ended, and the spin Nancy Gao put on her blowing up the Sinon/Sojourner. She was desperate, like Steven suggests, to get a W somehow, and it completely backfired because Earth underestimated the OPA again.
We'll soon find out the Belters' side of this incident rearing its ugly head. We know Drummer/Ashford gathered the intel on Marco being aboard the _Pizzouza_, but we do not know who leaked it to the UN's "undercover asset", as they're referred to in this episode. The blowback's not going to be pretty.
In the previous episode, Amos made a point of noting new openings at the top of the artifact and that there was "no way" they'd be able to close them. It's no accident that the slugs were crawling down the wall on the inside.

Steven I think the thing you are missing about Murtry is that he's a racist. He's racist agint Belters.
This "force field" is just the atmosphere... Earth has the same thing, if you stray too low into thicker and thicker atmosphere you end up burning up. Any planet's gravity and atmosphere slows you down, you must keep your speed up to avoid falling too low into thicker atmosphere. That requires some sort of thrust, be it main engines or just reaction control thrusters.
@@Tito373737 The Expanse is sooo much cooler when you understand orbital basics and the effects of acceleration. It's a whole new layer of awe for the show runners for making things as scientifically accurate as they do.

I'm watching this season for the 2nd time and enjoying it waaay more (lovin' it actually) than I did the first. I didn't dislike S4 at all,I just think S3 was so mysteriously impressive and just f***in awesome that when the show brought things down Purposely it took a bit of adjusting. Just the amount of insane interesting shit going on everywhere is so much fun. Isn't it great how Marco hasn't had much screen time at all and he is such a great character,frightening....Great writing!!

Marco still has Naomi's tech that blows up reactors. Fake videos, like the one Clarissa created of Holden, are very real. Marco is one of the smartest people in the system...give him more credit....because he is playing chess while everyone else is playing checkers.

That was a weak excuse. I also understand Marty's position. I just don't agree with your use of they, unless it applies to you and you except it. You lumped some peoples actions to every bodies fault or responsibility. So remember, whatever your actions are, your wife and children are also responsible.
Yeah... a lot of people seem to conflate understanding with agreeing. Murtry's actions make a whole lot of sense. Well, even more so after this episode. Some say this season is slow? I dunno, I guess people aren't running around every episode but there's more build up in every episode than I think any season has done. Reminds me a little of the first season and a half; lots of things going on you don't realise are connected until right at the end. Great reaction as always. Can't wait till you see episode 10!

Whats funny is in the books without spoilers I legit hated everyone on Illlus so the show did a better job expanding the conflict albeit the conflict was much more savage.
It's a great show but I'm a belter fan for the reason Nikki said the earth and Mars treat them like shit. And I believe they bombed that ship because they were afraid of the earth coming to the planet and killing them for the stuff they could sell and make millions I suppose from. But I get Steve's point to if people killed someone belong to me I would be piseex also. But I don't know its the good thing about this show it make you think of what peoples are capable of doing to one another for power and territory
