    Only the people that never listened more than one Black Metal band will say that it all sounds the same.
    I'd argue that it's one of the most diverse genres of music in general.

    • @zdengvox
      @zdengvox Před 7 lety +21

      Φιλιππος tell me why do you think it is not diverse.
      For example, Burzum, Dimmu Borgir and Ulver(Bergtatt) sound so different, yet all of them are black metal.

    • @goldmund2902

      Φιλιππος go and compare "hail sporit noir" and "anaal nathrak" or "alcest" and "tsjuder" or "burzum" and "urgehal". i really ask you to show me some bands out of another music genre that are this different from another but but yet same the same genre.

      Is that some Freudian slip that meant BMheads are fundamentally robots chosen by the genre to be such? Coz i listen to the genre only because i'm basically inquisitive and explorative in terms of music (that's why i love anything progressive as long as it is not too self-indulgent), and arrived at BM as the highest expression of metal, but don't really find much to it musically (other than i f'n LOVE some of its more promising subgenre such as ABM)! My aesthetic freedom is still in tact, and BM is just second rate to me.
      Maybe "it" didn't chose me coz i refuse to be a robot? Or am i too fucking intelligent? Or that i don't take drugs anymore? Which? lol

    I listen mainly to death Metal but i enjoy a lot of Black metal the only problem i have had with Black metal was with some of the fans I have encountered. For instance bullying a 11 year old kid for wearing a slipknot t shirt. Just makes u look like an asshole just because he doesn't listen to what u deem is excepatable there is nothing cool about bullying and Intimidating children. A lot of young kids haven't even been exposed to other generes of Metal. They tried ripping the kids shirt off even. I know all the deatils because i was working crowd control/ Security what ever u want to call it. It felt good being able to do to them what they were doing this kid. Even on the way out some of the fans started punching these 2 guys. They had to go to the hospital. And this was inbetween sets so the loghts were on and people could hear what was going on. The crowd would of probably done worse if i didn't get to them first. I did apparently break one of the mens collar bones i lost my job for it. But got hired a week later doing the same shit at a better venue. I honestly didn't know i had injured the man that bad. But when i grabbed the mans shirt while pushing him off the kid was when i must of broken his collar bone because my hand hit him really fucking hard and he fell on the ground. Granted i could of handled it better. And I should of known i didn't need to be so rough. I am a big and pretty strong well not anymore i am becoming a fat old man. I am Samoan though not much i can do about my size.

    I used to hate Black Metal due to the stereotype of the genre being for "evil" dudes who takes pictures of their dead bandmates, kill each other and burn down churches. Then my brother showed me some Abbath inverviews and i thought "well they can't be all bad". I listened to a little bit of Abbath and Immortal as well as Bathory, then my brother showed me Ulver, which is pretty much running non-stop in my speakers at this point. It's a genre that definitely takes some getting used to, but once you "get it" it's pretty awesome.

      as much as what you said is true, i have to say that in this day and age thrash metal is unfortunately getting more stale and close-minded because nobody tries to make something original. it's like everyone(i mean new, young bands ofc) wants to sound like something already made for the 20th time instead trying to be your own. i see very little new bands trying to have their own image, sound and style nad bring something original to the table. they all matched the look and speed of the old school thrash metal but they lack the soul. also just saying you forgot progressive thrash metal.

    Those people are closed minded and only look at the surface. Black Metal has just as many sub-genres as other genres of Metal. I've been listening to metal since I was 10 starting with Power Metal then discovering Thrash and Death Metal when I was 12 and Black Metal when I was 13.
    Black Metal to me, is the most beautiful form of art. The dissonance, the emotion, the ATMOSPHERE. Especially the ATMOSPHERE. It is quite an underrated and underused aspect in most forms of music, except with Black Metal. The bad production quality, I think, really enhances the atmosphere and makes it much darker. Bands that do this really well are Leviathan, Xasthur, Burzum, Darkthrone, or more underground bands like Veldes, and Eneferens (Blackened-Doom Metal but you get the point).

    Some tastes are acquired. A context must be taken. Once you have the context down on what you're hearing, it all makes sense. Same thing with black metal. I thought it sounded like utter shit, then the context came in and it's now my favorite genre

  • @cavemancult1999
    @cavemancult1999 Před 4 lety +2

    From my personal experience Black Metal is probably one of the most alienating genres but the points you make are interesting
    - From what I have heard Black Metal doesn't always sound the same, I mean if you actually keep an open mind about it you can quite literally hear a difference between Darkthrone and Ghost Bath for example, one has a lot more of a distorted scream whilst the other has more of a howling type of scream . Sure they may have the distorted screaming vocals but I mean, I personally don't listen to black metal (I don't normally listen to it either, closest thing is War Metal, Crust Punk and similar genres) to hear the lyrics, I just listen to it to hear the "scream" mixed in with the instrumental.
    - Loads of other genres make "satanic" music, even in recent times in hip hop but I think the Black Metal being Satanic stigma came from the Church burnings as well as the constant use of satanic imagery
    - From my personal experience (and this is why I see Black Metal is quite alienating) black metal does have a Neo-Nazi problem, whether it be the music itself (which is fine you can listen to it) but a lot of black metal fans who I have talked to in the past are Natsoc, Nationalist in general, racist or whatever else, especially as opposed to Hardcore Punk (which I listen to a lot more and have more friends in the Hardcore Punk scene) it is definitely more alienating than others and a lot of the times have put people off from the genre, so even if you aren't a neo-nazi yourself, it is important to recognise the heavy amount of Neo-nazi fans in the scene and why a lot of people would see it as alienating.
    - Black Metal being idiotic? I mean a lot of the iconic black metal music videos, whether it be that Immortal music video where they are running in the woods or that Dimmu Borgir music video which is just a bunch of over the top spooky sacrilegious shit (Sacrilegious scorn music video) were made around the time where being over the top edgy was acceptable and not deemed for ridicule or mockery plus the corpse paint, constant frowning and whatever else makes them look silly these days but back in the day that shit was "radical" and whatever else.

    I don't really hate it, but just think bands and musicians should experiment and make Black Metal a musically atractive genre. I'm sure this can be possible, it could even help to solve the "bad production" problem many people hear. Black Metal's good, however, it needs more experimentation. It's just my opinion.

    I think, and this is totally my opinion, that there is an unspoken stylistic divide between metal fans between the "brutal" or super heavy side and the melodic or atmospheric side and while there is some overlap it seems that fans tend to stick to one end of the spectrum. Black metal, for the most part, falls into the melodic camp and doesn't try to be as in your face as death metal or thrash metal does and it seems that black metal fans would rather listen to older heavy metal as it is much more melodic in nature. Don't get me wrong here, there are death and thrash bands I like but I quickly get fatigued listening to those when I could put on some black metal, heavy metal, and even some melodic death metal and listen to it for hours.
    It is like the one side goes out to shows to drink and mosh while the other goes out to see the musicianship and get into the atmosphere. I find that black metal just doesn't have the same appeal with the brutal crowd whether or not we are talking live performances or recorded albums. Now, there are of course your hybrid styles like black/thrash, black/death, black/speed, etc that does have a lot of crossover appeal but in many cases neither side really tends to jump the gun and go past the crossover zone. Obviously there are exceptions though.

    As Metalhead, I love Black Metal. However, I am very picky. And I can't stand the incredible low production some bands puts out. I can however, understand if time, money and even knowledge might had been issue, but there is a lot of BM-bands who has good production, but yet manage to sound old-school. Some of my favorites such as Elderwind. Eldarmar, Nordfrost, Bezmir are all very old school sounding, but yet has incredible productions. Infernal which is now no longer active (R.I.P Blackmoon) is another great example, but take Blackmoon's ex-band, Dark Funeral. It sounds to polished and in a way little to "cute". Their older albums such as In the sign and Black Arts are incredible tho. But that is the beauty with BM (but not limited to BM really), there is something for everyone.
