    Hey Mike, I enjoyed your video, especially how the Zippo lighter could, in a pinch, burn so many different kinds of fuels. That was informative and fascinating to me. You dispensed a lot of good information, but I have to take exception to one thing you said concerning the Bic lighter . . . "You can't refill this in the field; once its done, its done . . . its just junk". The Bic, as I'm sure you know, is still able to produce sparks after the fuel is gone. As a matter of fact may people on YT have taken their used up Bics, cut off the bottom, added tinder to the empty chambers inside, and made a nice little fire lighting tool.

    i prefer emco for one reason, pull out wick section the push some tinder up in its place then open lighter and close couple times and it sets tinder up, i have used charga cotton wool, and few other things so can use even if no fuel in lighter

  • @cr0cket01
    @cr0cket01 Před 9 lety +1

    best one is emco lighter as you can take out middle bit and push tinder up instead then flick it couple times will light natural and made tinder like charcloth

    The little ferro rod on the bottom of the match safe can be snipped with wire cutters and used for zippo flint. They tend to pop out most of the time anyways.

    Strike anywhere matches are getting rare and hard to find. Some other quick flames are pine sap and dry pine needles (actually anything pine).

      Yes pine sap and dry pine needles will work but this video is about keeping matches in the waterproof match container. And no, strike anywhere matches are not hard to find. Many stores carry them. You just have to look for them. You can also ask your local hardware store manager to carry them.

      Rebekah Davignon Our local Ace Hardware keeps them in stock. If you have an Ace in your area, check with them. If they don't stock, they can order them for you. FWIW, every time I go by our Ace, pick up an extra box or 2 for just in case.

    Great kit, love getting other people ideas! I use a Pelican Micro case as fire kit. Review on my channel if you're interested.

  • @embaradosmithingandwoodcraft

    mike iv said this so many times don't take it wrong but your wrong that is not flint it is the same as your faro rod true flint or chert or jasper they are all a natural stone very simaler to quarts and obsidian if you drilled or carved a piece small enough to fit a zippo and spin the striker wheel it would shatter the flint
    i know it is packed and labeled flint it is not

    • @SchoolOfSelfReliance
      @SchoolOfSelfReliance  Před 9 lety +1

      I know they are not "true flint" like flint stones. I have true flint with a steel striker that I will do a video on in the future. They are called flints by Zippo though, and so we call them by their manufacturer's name so people know what they are purchasing and what to look for when they go to the store. ;)

    What's better than a BIC lighter? *THREE* BIC lighters, stored separately. It all depends upon the scenario that you are prepping for. If you're concerned about a return to the stone age, then YMMV... 😀

    This is the size of kit I will put in my expedition bag when I get it. But I tried it in my BOB and it's just too big (and I have a pretty big BOB). Does it fit pretty well in yours?

    • @SchoolOfSelfReliance
      @SchoolOfSelfReliance  Před 9 lety +1

      Yes it does fit well, but I've been packing my BOB and hunting bags for years. If you find you have trouble getting it to you bag, try attaching it to the outside of your BOB with molle strips. Your medical kit should always be readily accessible in case of emergency and if you don't feel like you can get it in your bag without having to "unpack everything" to access it, then just strap it on the outside somewhere (side is usually good and out of the way). Its better to keep things you will need and use often (first aid kit, fire kit, knife) near the top where you can access it and keep things you won't use as often (boots, clothing, other tools or extra food/water rations) down in the bag further.

    It's IMCO not EMCO and that company is out of business. If you want a real IMCO now it's going to cost you over $100...plenty of good Japan copies though.

    • @SchoolOfSelfReliance
      @SchoolOfSelfReliance  Před 9 lety

      SHEEPDOG DILIGENTIA VIS CELERITAS They were German/Austrian made and they were sold by EMCO Supply Inc for years before they ran out. You can find them listed as both IMCO and EMCO on the internet however, remember that incorrect spelling is still going to come up in search engines as a meta tag, it might actually make finding the product easier. Check ebay too. They used to be cheap lighters when they were being manufactured, but now they have become collectors items.

    • @sheepdogdiligentiavisceler3280
      @sheepdogdiligentiavisceler3280 Před 9 lety

      Very familiar with them. I have several and have yet to ever see one that says EMCO. All say IMCO made in Austria.

    • @SchoolOfSelfReliance
      @SchoolOfSelfReliance  Před 9 lety

      We know they are IMCO. I was explaining that because OTHER people spell it EMCO, search engines will bring up websites for both spellings because of the meta tags.

    • @sheepdogdiligentiavisceler3280
      @sheepdogdiligentiavisceler3280 Před 9 lety +1

      Yea lots of uneducated people in America that can't spell. Even more don't know the difference between too, to, and two or there, they're, or their. You won't catch me lowering my intelligence and making myself sound like an idiot just to pick up a few more viewings of my videos. That's your choice if you do.

      And being a pompous spelling nazi ass shows you have no manners, no respect for others, and certainly are nothing but an internet troll if you spend your day correcting people on spelliing. Get a life troll. We ban idiots like you who waste our time.
