  • Succession is one of the best shows on TV right now and arguably is on track to be one of the best of all time. Logan, the patriarch of the elite Roy family and his ambitious, cutthroat offspring take center stage, but that isn't to say that the show is without great characters on the outskirts of the family. One of the best of such characters is Tom. And his cunning coup in season 3 drastically alters the dynamic of power in the Roy family and the trajectory of the show.

    Greg has Roy blood. Wait til he realizes he has more juice than Tom. He's starting to recognizing it by the end of Season 3.

      I think that blood has nothing to do with it. In the end, it was Karl, Gerri and Frank who were with Logan at the negotiations table. Logan could invite Roman to stay from the start of the talks with Matsson, but didn't. He could bring Shiv aboard at any time but didn't. He could even tell Kendall his plans when he wanted Logan to buy him out, but didn't it. In the end, as much as Logan tries to make his kids see the ultimate goal, even he gets tired of their stupidity and surrounds himself with only the most loyal and competent, which happens not to be of his own blood.

      I get what you are saying. I do not completely agree though. Greg chooses immediate power and prestige over future wealth as an heir to his grandafther's WayStar stock holdings. He is the real gambler in this saga. So, having pushed his chips to the center of the table; having got a whiff of royal power by proximity while in Tuscany and already having sold his soul to the devil at Tom's invitation, Greg is the Joker on this game. But who has the better hand, Tom or Greg?

      @aleksisuuronen5969 Před 2 lety +35

      It was foreshadowing for the betrayal. Remember? Nero pushed his wife down the stairs into her death before marrying Sporus (allying with Greg). Also in the story there was how Nero truly loved Sporus like Greg and Tom truly are bros and trust each other, like when Tom didn't tell that Greg had spoken to the writer in S02. Shiv's and Tom's relationship was nothing but trust, Shiv cheating, wanting open relationship on wedding night (where she later indicates that Tom isn't free to do what he wants), stringing Tom to be a big deal in Waystar someday until suddenly swiping in saying she will be the successor after only bashing the company, them always talking about Shiv's moves but not much Tom's and it ending up into S02 breaking point. S03 when Shiv should be trying to fix the broken marriage more she meets Ken and Tom hears about it from Greg when in the marriage Tom tells everything to Shiv (always calling her what happens), Shiv acting like Tom is nuincance and doesn't talk about it with him once when he is being worried about prison, Shiv getting mad for Tom wanting a baby (which is Tom's part to secure the relationship if he goes to prison since Shiv will dump his ass the minute it would happen), then finally her saying she doesn't love her just after Tom seeing some light of her agreeing into having a baby (and that was basically just because her mother said she shouldn't have one and after the prison danger).
      So to summarise they aren't a team but she plays her game Tom as secretary when Tom and Greg are much more team even if Greg has been climbing the ladder and being under Tom. Tom trusts Greg more than Shiv. But the allegory is more about Tom's and Shiv's relationship than Tom's and Greg's.

    Unlike the Roy children, Tom has an accurate view of reality-he can see how he is perceived, understands his place in their world and doesn’t have delusions about his own abilities or what he has to do to get ahead. All the Roy children have an over inflated sense of their own importance and firmly believe they deserve the top job over anyone else. I don’t think they ever considered anyone other than another sibling could be competition or imagined that Logan’s reluctance to hand over control to them might be even slightly rooted in their own incompetence. That’s why both their father’s willingness to sell the company and Tom’s betrayal would never have occurred to them.
    While Tom certainly is ambitious, I believe he’s actually far more loyal than any of them. Right up until that last conversation with Shiv, if she had but shown him just a little bit of consideration I don’t think he would have turned on her. Throughout the season even though he was already questioning whether he should cut his losses, he still called her and kept her in the loop whenever anything was going on. She reciprocated by always keeping things from him, making decisions based solely on her own best interests and totally disregarding his needs/fears. It’s only when he’s convinced (by her own actions and words) that he’s never going to matter to her that he finally decides to look out for himself. Yes, he wants money, power, and control but he also needs to be loved.
    I have heard people complain this season that there wasn’t enough character development, that they were just doing more of the same. Frankly, for me, that’s a feature not a bug. In this show, events are driven by character not plot. So we see get to know every nuance of these characters-faced with different scenarios yet acting true to who they are at their core. Tom’s decision is not a change-it’s in line with everything we have seen and know of him from that first episode. Given what we know of him, in retrospect, we can clearly see how this is the only choice left to him. It’s at once surprising and yet entirely natural. Now we can rewatch previous episodes and retrace his steps with a new appreciation for the writing. I’m simply blown away by the excellence of this show.

      Oh they definitely know Logan thinks they are incompetent. The problem is that they think he loves the company more than them, so the only way to get the love and attention they need is to control the company. They were raised to fight over scraps of affection with each other, not be loyal, which stops them from achieving the potential they all have. Shit Roman and Connor were loyal their entire lives, up to a point, do you see Logan respecting them for it?
      Tom is a pawn in the game, just as Shiv needed him for an insider in the company with business experience to advise her, he also needs her because he has no parachute once he stops being the golden boy. Tom is sadly one of the few I truly believe can't win.

      Tom is by the far most capable person in the inner circle. They've hinted at it this season but it appears Tom turned ATN into a money machine again which makes sense since like Karl, Gerri, he got to the top by being shrewd and talented. There is no way Logan would have let Shiv marry him if he didn't see something in him. Tom is capable and cunning but next to the family he just doesnt seem that way and it kind of nudered in their presence. Tom actually had to work to get to his current level which is well beyond what anybody like him should be capable of. Tom has shown Logan he is loyal, can play the game, is shrewd, smart, and more than anything could bury Logan and anybody else in the family if he wanted.. I personally don't think Tom did it himself but fed the info to the right person (which might be the same thing).

    Tom's secret power is that he's just as ruthless and immoral as the Roy family but he's escaped by the ever-engulfing flames of greed and ambition. He understands that there is power in not being the most powerful. He and Gerri are very similar in that regard. They know that being on the top comes with risks that are pointless for them to take. They are the ones below the CEOs and Presidents- rich, powerful, and with many of the same benefits, but without the threats that come with being the leader. That's why they are the ones that stay; they are constant.

    I think people also forget the part where Tom was also looking for security within the Roy family. He married Shiv with a terrible prenup, however he didn't care about that because he loved her and was still "in". Later though, he becomes a sacrificial pawn and realizes he needs to look out for himself since Shiv barely has his interests in mind. At some point he starts trying to have kids with her (since that would keep him tied to her through child support) and doesn't succeed, only for Shiv to hit the final nail in essentially admitting she doesn't love him. Tom has no love and no security in his marriage, in hindisght it was only a matter of time before he switched to Team Logan.

Before she actually became involved in the company, she and Tom low key agreed he would be climbing up the ladder and she would stay on the sidelines and do her political stuff. This is what I just realized: she was still manipulating Tom into moving higher so that she could still have some type of power in the business without being in business, and that the only reason she was even doing the political stuff was so that she could tell herself she was better and less corrupt than her family.

    New to this channel and love your analysis. I agree that Greg will likey betray Tom, as he has already shown that his own self interests trump all else. He is a climber (ridiculed as a pauper), who holds power by the secrets he keeps and his potential to use them, the way he uses his rising social status to assure his place at the table. Greg's betrayal is also foreshadowed in how his charatcer mirrors Tom's in that "bitterness" you reference as a motivator and a reason for why he would--just the way Tom did Shiv. As Tom does for Shiv, Greg does indeed have feelings for Tom and vice versa, but they do not superceded their own self-interests. Tom throws Greg a bone as the two outsiders seek to overthrow the incompetenece and hubris of their entitled rivals, aligning themselves with generational wealth. Lastly, this series reveals how deeply entrenched the transcational nature of every relationship is for the Roys, as the overriding interpersonal constructs of their damaged souls. They know no other way to interact with others beyond the alterior motives that inform them.

    i think tom and greg could go either way post s3. personally, i think if tom gets away from his toxic, borderline abusive relationship with shiv he may begin to change his behavior towards greg. once that power balance shifts and tom feels less put down by someone important to him, he’ll stop needing to put down greg in response. greg could still betray him but i feel they might realize the two of them are much stronger together- tom knows business and he can kill but he doesn’t have a familial connection to the roys besides shiv and that’s probably gone now. while greg may not have much business experience just yet he does have roy blood and is easy to underestimate which ultimately makes him quite dangerous. if greg was smart, he wouldn’t betray tom because if he does then who will he have? i think toms line in the season 3 finale to greg “who has ever looked out for you in this fucking family?” will likely stick with greg and influence some of his decisions going forward.

    Tom's an idiot. The horse to back would have been his own if he had anything worth backing. Tom is not a killer. He's a groveler. There is no such thing as earning Logan's respect. He doesn't respect people he uses them and discards them. He did it to his kids he will do it to Tom. The season finale showed the last of the sibs learning that the pat on the back doesn't mean shit. Only for Tom to show up minutes later to receive it after convincing himself that it meant everything. Finally the gift to Logan that he had been agonizing over since the very fist episode when he got him a watch that he basically threw in the trash: his kids' heads on platters, his legacy secured. And that's it for Tom.
    Tom and Gregg both know that Gregg met with the writer. They both ate shit in a sense to keep that secret from Logan. So there's that bit if mutually assured destruction. But I think Tom is going to have to be more afraid of what Gregg will do. He's betrayed everyone who he once sided with as soon as he saw their ship sinking. In ways more craven than Tom. He has already betrayed Tom 5 times. Tom wants love and has again partnered with someone who has proved not to love him.

    I feel like I’m in the minority here because after watching a lot of analysis videos about this, most CZcamsrs say they think Greg is going to betray Tom. I don’t think it’s going to happen. Throughout the show Tom and Greg’s relationship changes drastically from the beginning of the show to the season three finale. Yes he still bullies Greg but it’s clear that he sees him more as an equal by the end of it. I think Greg sees that difference in Tom as well and even if he planned on betraying him, I think their talk would have changed that. Also maybe it’s because season four is confirmed to be the last season and we probably won’t have time for a conclusion to a betrayal storyline. Or that in interviews the actors say that Tom and Greg get closer the more they go through together and how they always say how much the two characters love each other. Tom doesn’t just see Greg as the naive little cousin from season one, he trusts him and he confides in him and although others (mostly Kendall) have had glimpses of what Greg will do to rise to the top, Tom has seen that side more than anyone. In fact, rather than a betrayal, I’m convinced there will be a confession of love between the two (romance or bromance idc which way you see them but they have the strongest relationship in the show and I think it’s only going to get stronger)

    Greg could have won by doing nothing. He stood to inherit 250 million dollars by not working for the Roys. He was disowned because he worked for Tom and Royco. Connor seemed delusional, but he was a lot less delusional than the other siblings. Connor knew he was going to lose the competition to succeed Logan as CEO, so he didn't play that game. His run for US president was a good analogy for the other siblings thinking they were going to be CEO.

    was there any evidence that greg was essential to tom's execution of the betrayal? I think, if not, the fact that he asked if he wanted to come with him is evidence that tom truly wants the best for greg and doesn't just want a lackey. Or at the every least he felt a duty to repay greg for all the risks he took for tom.

  • @bobbymccarty0
    @bobbymccarty0 Před rokem

    Tom can be very abusive towards Greg, corporate hierarchy, and hierarchy in general encourages this kind of behavior, but Tom the country mouse does have some sweet moments with Greg, not telling about his “pre-meeting” with the Logan biographer, accepting Greg’s request to hang a crime ornament on one of his branches, they can commiserate to a degree over jail, Boar on the Floor, sharing the secret of cruises and the shredding, being black sheepish…
    It is annoying to see Tom put down Greg, the brutalizing, hazing behavior is obnoxious and demeaning, but there is a kind of bond, Greg might be less enthusiastic and sentimental about it than Tom though, so its a coin flip imo.
    I think Tom and Greg’s relationship is better than Tom and Shiv’s tho, even tho Shiv shows degrees of remorse and guilt at times, she has for the most part treated him very poorly. Meanwhile Tom, while verbally and physically berating Greg a number of times, does not seem to act out of guilt but out of love for Greg when he’s at his most virtuous. Shiv offers up Tom for the blood sacrifice but Tom doesn’t offer up Greg, maybe because he fears retaliation from Greg, “But you told me to shred the papers, i’ll rat on you, etc.” Then again Greg is offered up as a sprinkles with Tom, so maybe it wouldn’t make sense for Tom to say “No, only offer up Greg”-idk there’s a lot of politics and game theory. Greg has also acted behind Tom’s back in the past, in S1 he helps Gerri over Tom, leading to Tom thinking that either Greg or Shiv squealed, I forget over exactly what. Greg also took some of the papers him and Tom were burning without Tom knowing. Will Greg betray Tom just as Shiv did? Tom emotionally invested in Shiv and Greg, and Shiv wronged him again and again despite him giving her the benefit of the doubt over and over, and while Tom holds a position more like Shiv’s in his relationship with Greg, Tom is still the more emotionally invested side, it is just expressed differently due to the power discrepancy, so Tom might end up being similarly betrayed emotionally, and politically in the way in which he betrayed Shiv.
