  • This video demonstrates how I stitch a cover to accommodate 4 or more notebooks. For demonstration purposes I made this book to hold 4 books, but you can easily make it to hold much more, up to as many as you like!
    I use a leather cover but you may use whatever your preferred material you like.
    Materials:
    Leather or faux leather
    elastic band for holding the signatures inside the book
    Canson Art paper or any type of paper
    wool dauber for applying dye
    Leather Dye, Eco Flo, Feibings...etc
    Latigo lace, paracord or elastic for the closure (or any method that works for you)

    Great video. A couple things coming from the old seamstress: to prevent your initial loop from pulling through, simply put a safety pin through it. Maybe I am just too aggressive with my journals, but shifting signatures was a problem until I realized it would be easy enough to secure them in their middles.To prevent the signatures from sliding away from the elastic bands during heavy use, place 2 holes in the center of each signature prior to placing them into the journal, then when you place the signature into the elastic, sew a thread into one of those holes, and out of the other catching the elastic between them and tie off the thread. When you want to remove a signature, simply cut that thread. I use a heavy gauge thread for that (again, heavy handed me) but any thread would work. Thanks for your video. Loving the rustic practical look of this journal as I dislike anything fussy (which tends to be showy and not for real use)..

    Wonderful, a really beautiful piece of work. For my birthday this year my husband booked me on an art course, he also paid for my 22 year old daughter to attend. This will make a beautiful keepsake of this event. The multiple booklets means I can place a good multi media paper booklet as well as Watercolour paper in the journal. Your tutorial also empowers me to make the journal any size I like. I made traditional leather Midori style travel journals with multiple styles of leaflets, including a multimedia paper one, for my daughter and two of her friends to commemorate their journey to Venice, a 21st birthday present from my sister. This stunning sketch book will continue the theme. Now if only I could get my son interested in something like this......

    Why didn't you use the long stitch method you used in your other journal diy? I guess I would love to see someone do that style but no luck on youtube. This is unique as I have not seen anyone else do this stitching with elastic. Thank you!

    • @darkchild57
      @darkchild57  Před 3 lety

      For the journal to be refillable the long stitch had to be modified. You could use extra elastic and create the long stitch look along the spine and then rethread the elastic as an open loop to accept signatures. Then continue the pattern for as many signatures as you need. I haven't attempted this but it is definitely possible with longer elastic.

  • @zachkrantz7691
    @zachkrantz7691 Před 8 lety +3

    i always notice the bands that keep your journals closed are always excessively long, to me this seems like a nuisance. Maybe you can try putting a loop in the flap and stitching some sort of animal tooth or the point of a deer antler to make a more rustic looking and tidy fastener to keep your journals closed.

  • @stefanmckannon1634
    @stefanmckannon1634 Před měsícem

    Do the bands binding the signatures need to be made out of elastic to do the same kind of job, or can they be made from a more robust material?

  • @gatosandwichera

    This one's by far the best version of the traveler notebook I've seen, I had in mind making a notebook exactly like this!! Thanks for the clip homemade awl idea, I would have never thought about it and it is what I was lacking to make the elastic come into the holes. Do you have any other idea on hole widener tool alternatives? (I use a pinboard pin to make the holes, so they are really small...)

    • @darkchild57
      @darkchild57  Před 9 lety

      gatosandwichera Thank you! If you want wider holes you should just invest in a set of leather hole punches, the kind that you uses a post and hammer. They are much easier to maneuver into place. The screw on punches come in a variety of diameters from 2mm on up.

    Love it, thank you for sharing ... I'll be off to make my own :D .... in your Dec video, on your journals there were two different types of stitching, loops at both ends but one had single middle stitching & it's the other with the double set of stitching ?? any chance of a video on that technique too please.

    • @darkchild57
      @darkchild57  Před 9 lety +1

      You're welcome and thank you for watching:) The stitching technique on both those journals were exactly the same, the only difference is that I punched 6 holes for each signature instead of 4. You could punch 8 if you wanted three section and so on. But most of us only do one or two sections. If you refer back to the video when I was making that template for the holes, if I wanted two sections I would adjust my measurements to add two more holes in the middle of each section. If you are still interested in a video demonstration I will gladly make one. Please let me know:) Feel free to send me a personal message as well if you have anymore questions! Take care and happy crafting!

    Such a wonderful tutorial. Just what I was looking for. I have a question. I love to recycle/up-cycle as much as possible. I found an old (soft/warn) leather jacket I was thinking of using to make a journal. It seems to be fairly thin and flexible. Any suggestions? I'm wondering if I should maybe glue 2 pieces of the jacket leather together but wasn't sure what type of glue to use, or if I should just try it as it is! lol I can't decide and just not sure.

    • @darkchild57
      @darkchild57  Před 7 lety +1

      Thank you:) I personally use Tanners Rubber Cement if you wanted to glue two layers together. It may not be worth it depending on how thin the material is some of the glue may bleed through. Cut off two scrap pieces and glue them together to see if this happens before you attempt on the final project.

    I can purchase elastic band if necessary, but I have thread i bought for the stitching. Will that work just as well, or is the elastic band the best choice?

    • @darkchild57
      @darkchild57  Před 3 lety +1

      Thank you:) I use elastic because it won't break if I try to force the signatures in. There's more flexibility, no pun intended, when installing or removing signatures. You can use thread if you want just make sure you allow enough slack for the thickness of the pages. Any unused thread will be loose which may cause the other sections to be loose since it's one single strand.

    • @littlegirl3263
      @littlegirl3263 Před 3 lety +1

    Since most of the leather pieces I've looked at are quite expensive ($55 for 2 mm single shoulder) what other materials would you suggest to give a similar feeling and weight as that of the leather you used? Most fabrics seem too thin to hold up. Would faux leather be a decent substitute to get the same feeling?

    • @darkchild57
      @darkchild57  Před 7 lety +2

      Faux leather is a good option but it won't feel the same. Nothing really in my experience feels the same as genuine leather. If there is a thrift store near you that sells clothing you may try to source out a used leather jacket or pants and use that as your book cover.

    Hey I was wondering if you can add list of materials for this notebook and what kind of paper you suggest..? I'd make my own signatures, but I'd love to make a journal like this and take notes in college for my chemistry class, It'd be great using blank pages with a notebook that will last me a long time. I'd love a rustic look as well. Also for a bookmark, would I just make a hole near the top with a knot and a thin leather strip at the end?

    • @darkchild57
      @darkchild57  Před 8 lety +1

      +AbyssalNova805 I used leather found at Tandy Leather. It was from the shoulder or you could use whatever thickness you like. If the leather is too rigid apply some Neatsfoot oil and that will soften it up. The paper was Canson 50lb sketch paper. It came in a 18" x 24" pad which I had torn down to size. I also use parchment paper that can be found at Office Depot or other office supply stores. The elastic cord is by a company named Dritz and that can be found on Amazon or many fabric stores. As for a book mark you could use leather, ribbon or the elastic will work. You can also attach a charm at the end of the bookmark to give it some "weight" and personalization. The method you have described for attaching the ribbon is a perfect solution. I would make two holes towards the top, either vertically or horizontally and attach your bookmark that way. I hope this helps. If you have anymore questions feel free to comment or send me a personal message.

    Allright, that was very educational, but instead of loosely tucking your cahiers behing the elastic, couldn't you puncture holes through the backs of the paper and the back of the leather wrap and run the elastic through there to tie them fixed to the leather? Or I guess that wouldn't make it refillable.
    As an alternative you could maybe use punctured holes in the back of the paper and the leather wrap to run a thread/elastic of its own through it to tie it together, that one can easily untie/cut through to refill it. To make it elegant,use a tiny bracelet clasp to easily open it up or close it when you refill it. Kind of like the clasps in this picture:
    www.dhresource.com/albu_393604011_00-1.200x200/metal-alloy-silver-jewelry-accessories-lobster.jpg
    Not sure about the esthetic result though.
    I think it's a great tutorial, but I'd be paranoid all the time about having my paper fall out of the wrap if you hold it wrong.

    • @darkchild57
      @darkchild57  Před 9 lety +1

      samgar2 Those are very good suggestions but to be honest I've been using these types of refillable covers and my pages have never fallen out before. The elastic is pulled tight at a certain tension that it's constantly hugging the book. Also you may puncture the top and bottom holes at a slightly lesser height than the actual signature that way there is even more tension holding the book book down. If you watch my old original video on DIY Journal I discuss that in the video somewhere. Thank you for watching!
