I'm glad I'm not the only one that noticed the timing issue. Anyone who spent 5 minutes or more playing with a small block chevy would know to back that timing off a smidgen and it would have popped off in the first 30 seconds or so
Next time pour more gas down the carb.
283 was bulletproof ! Simple , versatile and reliable engine.
i bought a $50 460 ford out of the woods, got it running, it cost $3,000 to install in my motorhome. 283 chevy is myfavorite i have 2 now. good video
i got the last 283 for $75 i saw the 1964 el camino it just came out of, havent ran yet, said it did
That's awesome. I love finding this stuff for cheap. Fun to tinker around with and if it turns out to be junk, you're not really losing
By the way fill the lil spout sticking up in the middle of the carb it will start and run about a minute ....make up regular battery terminals and wires it will start easy .....too much amps lost in those cheap jumper cables
Put some serious fuel in it not a drizzle lol

Iv got one complete like that before for a 360 short block ..the 283 had alot of water I changed oil cleaned the oil pump and the oil pan converted for spin on oil filter too so complete oil change ...thing will run wide open smoking like crazy but its a good motor to rebuild same as the one you got here

Shoulda pulled the plugs and checked em. Then give a lil squirt of gas in each one. Back together . Prime carb real good and it will fire right up.😊😊
i bought another 283 out of a 1964 el camino, $75, took parts off the other engines and had it running, good video

Pull some gas 😂down the carburetor while you're trying to start it. You shouldn't have been messing with the time. Anyway, it's probably already set. Looks like u all was scared of it standing back like that.
A 283 with a 2 barrel is about as forgiving a motor as was ever built. Bring #1 up on compression and set your timing order from there. Dump a good quantity of gas down the throat, and that thing would start. Moving the distributor back and forth a few degrees is worthless. Dropping a teaspoon of gas is worthless. Starting a motor on a block of wood is dangerous. This is just a horror show all the way around. I can't believe you declared a success when it spun about 3 times on its own.

Carl Childers would've got that motor started in no time . Some people know him from the movie sling blade . He loves to tinker with small motors and such. He always recommends smearing a little mustard on the side of the engine block to help it crank up

it's an early run 283, or it's the 265 and not a 283, I had them both back in the day.
It actually decodes as a 67 2bbl 283 powerglide from an Impala. Funny story about it. 1 buddy of mine has the original car and another buddy has the original transmission

You guys are doing that on purpose you should know to set the timing back
you only have to have 4 things 1 spark, 2 compression, 3 fuel, 4, timing, if you have those 4 things it will run. check those 4 things and try again . I wouldn't even try till you have confirmed those 4 things. else you could burn up your starter. good luck. 50 bucks for a 283 not too bad !!
You kept retarding the timing when you needed to advance it. You should have turned the distributor counter clockwise.
I figured that out when i was maybe 11 years old, ya, i was playin with fire abd gasoline back then lol
timing is off and there is no gas can hocked up to the fuel pump 2 rookies
great video mate looks like fun tinkering to get it to run.
