  • It's a rainy morning at the Valley Railroad, as 2-8-2 mikado type steam locomotive 3025, prepares for the days work outside of the backshops in Essex, Connecticut. 3025 is dressed as a New Haven J1 mikado, but under all the makeup, is a Chinese SY class mikado, built in 1989 for hauling coal. She is now re-assigned here on passenger duty, as she bring passengers back in time to the 1920's, when times were simpler. When the world moved a lot slower. 3025 puts on a great show for us today, as we chase her and the eight car train along the old New Haven section of track owned by the Valley Railroad. Enjoy the video!

I had the pleasure of driving her as a high school graduation present back in 2017. One of the best experiences of my life.

I think it would be cool to see 3025. It’s another cool steam locomotive.

Its such a fun experience to be aboard and hear the bell and whistle blow then feeling the tug of the engine on the slack as she gets underway.
Its great to close your eyes and feel the car sway to the rhythmic sound of steel wheels on steel track and imagine you've gone back in time to a gentler time and place in history ❤

The Mikado class locomotive were a 9700 2-8-2 built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works for
Japan in 1897. The Mikado type was the workhorse steam locomotive of the 20th Century used on many passenger rail lines.

It is a Chinese engine built in 1989. It's not a New Haven engine, just modified to look like one.
