I found your channel while looking for tutorials on rock tumbling. I enjoy your detail both in the finding and finishing. And now what to do with finished rocks.
I inherited a tumler tumbler from my younger brother and my dad 35 years ago. My son was 9 then. But we never got started then. Recently I was helping my younger brother at the sale of his mom’s estate and a lady showed him a “tupper ware” bowl and asked if the rocks were included for 1$ marked on the lid. My brother looked at the rocks and at me and said he and Dad had tumbled them many years ago.
He said he would not be able to get them back across the country did I want them. Our father was a geologist and really loved rocks, the natural world, and camping. (Reminds me why I like your channel). I accepted the rocks gratefully. When I showed them to my son and my grandchildren it was my 10 year old granddaughter that enjoyed them most.
I told you all this to tell you the use we found for some of the polished rocks, the ones smaller than a dime, the girl likes to play mancala. It is usually played with 48 small glass beads. My granddaughter and I were able find 5 sets of 48 stones each in that bowl the right size to play mancala with.
So if you have 48 small polished rocks make or buy a mancala board. Touching my Dads polished rocks never fails to bring a smile to my face even when one of the grandchildren just beat me at mancala.
Thank you for your art. Once a good teacher always a good teacher.

    • @MichiganRocks
      @MichiganRocks  Před 2 lety

It's funny that you mentioned mancala. I'm a recently retired teacher. Another teacher once asked me if I'd make some mancala stones for her. She was doing some sort of project where she needed some mancala games. I agreed to, but she told me to wait and never did ask me to make them.
My wife and I have been playing backgammon almost every day for about a year. I have thought about making backgammon checkers for us, but haven't gotten around to doing that project quite yet.
Enjoy your games with your grandchildren. We love games here too.

Yes!! You remind me of my two oldest brothers they are both very organized and neat and everything has its place. I am 56 and have a craft room but have gotten sick with MS and fibromyalgia and had to sell everything but I’m sticking with my rock tumbling because that’s something I can still do. I enjoy watching the way you store and keep your rocks. I am very much a beginner I started in December 2022 when I came across boxes and boxes of fossils and rocks in my mom’s attic! Since then I’ve been hooked, but it’s taking me a long time to learn the different rocks and minerals that make up the rocks. I’ll keep watching your channel and hopefully I’ll keep growing in wisdom. I did take pictures of cleaned up wet rocks. They’re all like 8“ x 60” Etc. I also have smaller rocks but I was wondering if you knew where I could send pictures of my larger rocks to find out what they are. I appreciate any help or direction you can give me God bless and take care. Have a wonderful, blessed day and if you’re hunting for rocks, Isaac can say is I wish I were there I live in California and our creek beds are all dried up here in the desert live just west of Bakersfield California. I have loved rocks since I was a kid living by Lake Michigan. Came across your video by accident. Loved your collection. I will have to watch what you do. We used to always look for pretty "stones or pebbles" as we called them while playing in the lake where they were already all smooth by nature. I believe we spent more time looking for them than playing in the water! Wish I had them now as I grew-up appreciating them more and more. I have been to Lake Superior also but was afraid to keep any of them as nowadays, I didn't think you could take anything from the State Parks? Do you know the true answer to that? It was just at a little hotel on the shores of Superior where guests were burning driftwood! I was in horror seeing this as I am sure you know how much a small branch costs in the stores! The people from the hotel told me so much washes ashore and that I could take what I wanted, but I didn't as I thought with my luck I would get caught in another state that didn't allow it to be taken! TFS!

  • @queenbee9505
    @queenbee9505 Před rokem

Lol. When I get a " hobby" I go all in! I have just started rock tumbling after an aborted attempt in 1969. I have been collecting rocks, fossils and shells since 1965. I had a habit of picking up rocks as a child ( and twigs and grasshoppers and preying mantis) and carrying them home, putting them in jars in my room.
They would always spontaneously disappear in a few days as my mother surreptitiously removed the bugs and most of the twigs and rocks.
She even through out my shells.
"Outdoor things belong outside" she suggested I keep an area outside for my stuff.
That stuff disappeared too. But over the years. I still purchased rocks, gems, crystals. Petrified wood, shells and of course no one threw them away as I have my own home.
When I was 8 my mom got me a rock tumbler. If there were instructions with it, I don't remember. I DO remember being 8, going out to the alley behind our home ( think a Christmas Story neighborhood EXACTLY) grabbing a handful of rocks, and throwing them into the tumbler with water. No grit or even sand. Water and grey rocks going around and around...and I fully expected by the weekend to have beautifully colored, polished rocks . Didn't know how that was supposed to come about but the commercial said I would.
That hot real old real fast with my mother insisting I only run that loud machine during the day when she was downstairs, and with my door closed.
I tried to sneak and run it at night and she would come in, yell at me and unplug it.
About 3 weeks in ( lots of muddy water, no shine) I was sneak plugging it at night as usual but she had enough.
She burst in, unplugged my tumbler, took it downstairs and threw it into the backyard and told me I better not bring it back into HER house. I think my dad might have laughed at that.
So no more rock tumbling for me.
I started collecting geodes and gems in 1986 as well as other stuff.
Recently, I have gone beyond collecting minerals and gems and gone back to rocks.
I have always been picking up a few rocks each year and placing them strategically among my bookshelves or on windows sills.
I wouldn't call it a hobby per season. I have a lot of collections and this appeared to be one of them
I noticed beautiful banding and crystals on a few of my rocks and started reading about them
The itch was back to finally do the rock polishing thing right.
THIS TIME. following instructions and researching.
    It isvon my bucket list.
So of course. I watched many videos then bought my grandson a tumbler ( National Geographic) as a Christmas gift..and myself a Lortone.
This was dangerous cuz I go all in...
Wait, make that 2 Lortones, 2 Chicago electric dual tumblers.
The goal was dedicated tumblers for each step..but that ended when I tumbled 4 batches of agates and local rocks...
My mind has been turning to what the heck will I do with all of these rocks?
Cuz I know I have close to 290 pounds in rocks.
The idea of them all over the window sills and tables is a non starter. I have plants and prefer a clean line of sight.
Lots of vitrines ( glass case tables) hold other stuff..no room on the table.
So I really wanted to see what you were doing with years of rocks.
You have a few plates of rocks and a few of display.
I think zi might slice some and inlay my foyer floor. Or maybe slice, put on a board and make door trim...something to be seen.
Rocks will always add rusticity to a space but I better come up with something cuz I have almost 100 lbs of various rough and my first 4 batches are well on their way!!🤣🤣🤣

Money is always tight but I've always loved tumbled rocks and I just don't have the money or the health to get out and look or buy a Tumblr. I love your channel. What a gorgeous place you live in.

You're right, I should sell some. The problem is that I don't have time to make videos, make some other things that I sell in a local shop, and also take the time to package things up and send them out. Maybe someday.

My wife and I are arrowhead hunters, we’ve been hunting over 20 years . She worked in Michigan in 2017 . Since then we’ve been picking up agates and different rocks that would tumble AMAZINGLY. We would pay for shipping and your time just to have about a coffee can full of ours tumbled by you. But being a teacher I understand how time is a premium.😊. We’re from Tennessee. Someday we hope to come back to hunt at the U.P. Cross my fingers .

I retired from teaching this year, but I have plenty to keep my busy just making videos. A coffee can full of tumbled rocks would take a long time to do. I rarely tumble other people’s rocks because it’s so hard to keep them separate from my own. When I tumble, I don’t do all the rocks for the same amount of time, which is why it’s difficult to keep them separated. Have you thought about getting a tumbler and doing them yourself? It is so much more fun that way.

Yes Sir, my wife wants a cab king . I want a tumbler. So until we can afford them both .🤷🏻‍♂️. Just kidding. If I get in the position to afford a good quality tumbler , maybe I could watch your videos for the Best Buy for my money. I wouldn’t want a piece of crap that wouldn’t do a good job . But thank you so much for posting and teaching. You guys stay warm

My daughter bought me a tabletop rock fountain. The rocks included are so darn ugly! I like some of the small ones you have stored away, they would look so good in any fountain, so maybe you could put some of your most liked rocks in a table top fountain display? Our family also likes rocks, wherever we go we just have to get rocks! My oldest rock is from Pocono mountain in Pennsylvania, I was climbing up a bit to have fun, and a rock tumbled down onto my mothers foot...lol. So I saved it! That was my first rock back in 1972. We have most of our rocks from all over Michigan, just sitting in bags and boxes.

@@zw5509 I did that once. I donated rocks to our local ROV (under water Remote Operated Vehicle) team. There was an international competition here in Alpena. Each team was supposed to bring something to give to the other teams from their part of the world. Our team waited until the night before the competition and then asked if I would donate rocks. I gave them something like 100 polished unakite rocks, since they're from Michigan and I had a lot. I heard that the kids from all over the world had a ball, trying to pick out the best one.
I also donate stone crosses to my church. I'll keep looking for other charities to donate to.

I bought a GIANT thick glass bottle at an antique show, used to make wine or beer I think. I plan on filling with my tumbled stones and set in a sunny window, probably would hold three times what you have in containers. I used to brew beer. I had a couple five gallon glass bottles. For brewing, it’s called a carboy. You’d have to be careful not to drop the rocks in from the top and break the bottom.
