  • Today, the Bad Boy 42", 22hp Kohler Rambler was mowing weeds, not grass. These weeds, looked like some type of clover. I'm no botanist so my knowledge is very limited. I have no clue of the actual name of these weeds. It may not be any type of clover. I do know they were very tough. It was a full 2 week growth since I last mowed and we've had our share of rain. I didn't take any measurements on the height but I'm going to estimate these weeds were from 3" to 8" throughout.
On the tallest areas I could hear the 22 hp Kohler bog down ever so slightly if I pushed it hard enough. I don't recall that ever happening before.
My wife came out with the leaf blower and cleaned the top of the deck about halfway through mowing the backyard.
I had to make 2 passes on most of our yard to get a good cut. The blades have about 30.25 hrs on them. I've been careful to mow only weeds and grass.
The underneath of the deck was clean before mowing and was cleaned after mowing. There was a LOT of buildup under the deck after this mowing. There's 2 big piles of chopped weeds on the ground after scraping it off.
On August 14, 2023, I posted a video of the Rambler mowing some extra tall grass. It was much taller than what you see being mowed here but it was a little easier to cut. I didn't hear the Kohler bog down but I took it easy and didn't push it hard.

      Hello EDD 👍🙂👍
It sure does. Every time I climb aboard I hear it groan. I know it struggles just carrying my 265 lbs around the yard.
Thank you for commenting, EDD. 👍

    Good evening Tom,
You grass looks great. The rambler held its own.
You might want to try raising the debris shield when cutting thick grass. I usually cut with mine raised. I have a lot of clover in my yard and it does get thick sometimes.
I cut my grass this morning because rain was in the forecast for today. I usually cut in the afternoon when the grass is dry. I was surprised that it was dry at 9am. My wife went out as I was getting ready to cut. She said you better hurry it looks like it could start raining any minute. I said don’t worry these bad boy mowers are so fast that as the rain drops form in the clouds I can be finished before they hit the ground. Well that’s my tall tale for today.
    Take care.

      Hello, Randy! 👍🙂👍
Thank you! I thought about raising the chute but didn't. I will definitely do that the next time I have to mow weeds this thick. I always mow in the later afternoon too. Yesterday I started around 5:30 pm and I do it for the same reason as you.
NOAA's rain forecast for our area is 80% tonight and 100% chance tomorrow. That means more mowing coming soon, if their prediction is right.
It got down right cold while I was out there mowing. I had to go change to warmer clothing when I was mowing.
Randy, you take care my friend and have a great weekend. 👍

      Good evening croquest! 👍🙂👍
We're really enjoying ours too. Even when I occasionally have to make 2 passes to get a good cut, doesn't bother me. I enjoy getting out there mowing.
So far changing the oil and filter, cleaning and oiling the prefilter and cleaning after mowing, is it.
And I'm with you 100% on the American made. I have no doubt there are parts of our mowers that are outsourced but on the most part, it's made and assembled right here in the good ol' US of A and that means a lot to me.
Thank you for commenting, croquest! 👍

You're driving it like an old riding mower. Make a pass then whip it around doing the "Y" maneuver(keeps it from the creating a rut) and it'll stripe and look so much better.

      Good morning, kenithj! 👍🙂👍
Thank you very much for the advice. I really do appreciate it. There's no doubt about it, my driving skills leave a lot to be desired. I'm in the dark on how to make a "Y" maneuver. I've tried to find a CZcams video showing how to perform one but didn't have any luck.
Kenithj, thank you for commenting and trying to help this untalented mower operator. 👊

19HP motor working hard as it can. It is solid semi-commercial mower that can fit in gates, or a weekly mower for a few non-challenging acres. Great machine thou.

      Hello, redvraven. 👍🙂👍
Sounds like you're liking and enjoying your Rambler. The Rambler was the only model Bad Boy made that would go through the doors on my storage building. And that's okay. The 42" does just fine and it is a great machine.

      Hello Rocky 👍🙂👍
I really wanted a larger size but the opening on our storage building is only 58". The Rambler is the only size Bad Boy mower that would comfortably go through unless I had the opening modified, and I didn't want to do that.

The mower I had before the Rambler was a 46" cut Deere STX46. I did have to raise and hold by hand the exit chute to get it in, but it did go in. I'm with you on both our sheds, the 42" is a great fit and I don't mind at all making a few more passes to get the lawn mowed.
      Take care.
