What Happened to UDisc Live?

  • Last week we learned that the Disc Golf Pro Tour would not be using UDisc Live as its digital scores and statistics provider for the upcoming 2024 season and will instead develop their own platform, in collaboration with the PDGA, hosted on DGPT.com. We discussed the implications of this move and the motivating factors for both the DGPT and UDisc that may have influenced their decision.

The idea of udisc emerging as a competitor is intriguing. Watch for them to make a grass roots move to support smaller events, particularly with the new membership required rules for B and C tier pdga events.

I feel like Udisc is more for local players and fun/practice round score keeping. It’s a great app. The detailed directions to thousands of courses. Smart layouts, etc. $30/year is super cheap. That’s less than one fast food sandwich every month. It’s funny what people will blow their money on while they complain about $2.50/month.

Unfortunately $30 a year is way to costly seeing how when the app first came out it cost $4.99 for the year that $25 increase is why I can keep my own score in my head not to mention more times then not the layouts on UDisc aren’t even up to date or showing the correct layout

Really disappointed with the huge U-Disc pro subscription increase, considering dropping that. As with most pro sports I am developing a somewhat ambivalent attitude toward the pro tour, I find myself less interested. I am mainly focused in my local club play and how I can improve my game (bought my first Innova disc in 1985).

From starting in 2018 to now, ive ised udisc primarily just for finding new courses and or layout. I take a score one time to "check in" to a course and add it to my list. Now that they finally changed the 10 scorecard being too much, i dont see a need to renew to udisc pro. The pdga switch is a no brainer and was bound to happen eventually.

Personally, I always thought UDisc should move in the social media direction of Disc Golf. Nothing crazy, but if UDisc had a section where you could have friends (which is already basically incorporated into the app through playing with them) and see their recent scores and/or any pictures or videos they may have taken on the course I think it would be really cool. It would also be a cool way to get more pictures for courses.

Udisc is still work the $30 for me as much as I use it (200+ rounds a year). The only way i could see myself moving to a PDGA style app is if they provided the same score keeping, stat tracking, and features as udisc. Also a way to import your rounds/stats from udisc to the new app. I dont use udisc to track the pro tour or tournaments so that change does not affect me.

I find one of the biggest benefits to UDisc is their course maps and location maps and will pay the fee just to support their efforts, however, I do hope they can develop their event hosting process to be a competitor to the PDGA and DGS as that has been a bit antiquated from a TD point of view.

The sport is young enough there need to be competing leagues. I do not like trusting the future of the sport to the whims of a few individuals trying to make money.
DGPT/PDGA need competition from smaller organizations, or they have no reason to give us an improved product.
GO UDISC! I might sign up for a tournament if it didn't come with the added pressure of joining the PDGA.

Very thought proviking. Thank you! A few thoughts:
1 - UDisc's main value to me and many users is course maps and on-course navigation. I don't use any of the stats or score casual rounds with friends that way. If PDGA had this feature I'd ditch UDisc in a secont.
2 - Many folks are unhappy with the PDGA for reasons I won't go into here. I know some events that use UDisc entirely because of that. If the PDGA wants to maintain its near-monopoly standing it needs to keep members happy. Preventing non-members from playing in many sanctioned events is more stick than carrot.
3 - The football imagery and analytics discussion is apt, but the reality is that disc golf is still a tiny sport compared to many others. The primary goal of the PDGA, UDisc and others should be to grow the sport, and thus grow the pie, rather than fighting over the size of slices of the small market.

I don't believe from the comments I've seen that Udisc initiated this, it certainly seems they knew of it much sooner than they revealed, which I have the same criticism either way but it would be an even stronger criticism if it was revealed that they were the initiators, and that is the fact that they chose to withhold any information about the removal of a core feature until after a huge number of the subscriber base had renewed subscriptions at double the previous rate.

I think the “pro” PDGA and “the rest of us” are so far removed. The revolving door of players that don’t stick with tournament play or the sport in general is why these two entities exist in the first place. One category for normal players, and the other for professional players/aspiring pros.

That's all disc golf is to the pro tour and pdga. They have done an amazing job over the last several years in marketing that. Or should I say, having US market it as 'Grow the sport'. Truth be told, I doubt they could give a rats rear about the kids they market to in the school programs and such. It's all about selling the merch when they grow old enough and making rich men richer. And we have all taken it hook line and sinker.

An informational video, as always - but also just like always, journalistically incomplete (I do understand you're not a journalist and don't claim to be one). The omission of such a perspective hurts the game, in my opinion. Check out the recent 60 Minutes production on sports gambling - not much good it does for society, and it can wreck people's lives. Is this good for the game? I doubt it, but it's gonna happen anyway.
As a newer player (began in December 2020), I was kinda hoping the PDGA scoring app and uDisc would merge - it would make sense in a lot of ways if that would happen. But I'm glad for StatMando (if this is what they want).

It has NOTHING to do with fan interaction or experience.
It has to do with $$$$$$ !!!!
They could care less about the fans, I wanna see how much the DGPT has made in the last few years….. where’s that money going? Or who’s pockets are getting stuffed. They’ve made millions and the product is still bad except for the players who don’t get any of the monies. And they are the ones who bring viewers and buy discs.

I am so glad I have never given DGPT a single cent of my money. Their coverage is lower quality than CZcams in 2012 - and it's little more than ultra-lossy 360p20 sold as 1080p60. In my view it's immoral to organise your business to take advantage of gambling - which is a curse on our society, and a major problem to be solved, not something to openly embrace.
