    What would you size is the most someone could go up when using this method?
    I recall someone say the most a ring could go Up is 4 full sizes, but wonder if it could go up more? And wonder if it's the same case when going Down.

    • @OnlineJewelryAcademy
      @OnlineJewelryAcademy  Před 2 lety

      It really depends on what the dimensions are of the materials you’re using to increase the size of the ring. Personally, I would only size a ring up to sizes. And, don’t forget, if there are stones in the ring you can only expand or decrease the size so far before the stones are affected. Thanks for watching! 😀

    • @OnlineJewelryAcademy
      @OnlineJewelryAcademy  Před 7 lety +1

      YES! You can add two metal spheres about 2.5mm in diameter, soldered approximately 4mm apart, to the interior of the shank of your ring. You'll still be able to get it over your knuckle and it will sit a little snugger.

    Synchronicity! I was just wondering what sizing stock was, and couldn't figure it out, even with Google - then decided to watch this video in my queue. So thanks!
    I have two questions.
    1) How is sizing stock different from sheet or wire metals? (Or is it just sold in smaller amounts?)
    2) Do you have tips and tricks (maybe a future video?) for capturing metal filings, for the purpose of trading in for refinement?
    Thanks!!

    • @OnlineJewelryAcademy
      @OnlineJewelryAcademy  Před 8 lety

      +jaykay415
      Hi JayKay, Sizing stock is different from other metal products in that it is milled to specific sizing requirements. You can buy it in 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, and full size increments. That way you save time trying to make a small piece that's the "goldilocks" or "cinderella" size that fits your client just right. As far as capturing metal filings or "lemel" goes, most jewelers rely on the "sweeps drawer" on their bench to catch this material. If you're not working at a jeweler's bench, you can attach a piece of leather or vinyl to the bottom of your work surface that extends out under your bench pin and onto your lap. Just remember to empty the contents of the hide/vinyl into a container every time you need to get up from the bench. When you have a big bucket full of sweeps, you can take them to your local refiner for processing.
      Thanks for watching! : )

    • @jaykay415
      @jaykay415 Před 8 lety

      +OnlineJewelryAcademy thanks for the great idea about the vinyl. My work bench is a big beautiful desk, and it's missing its middle drawer, which could work for a catch-space, I think. I can sit at two heights, so it works nicely for me.
      And the sizing stock, I get it now. Thanks!

  • @huskyfluffy
    @huskyfluffy Před 7 lety +1

    Hi! Are you sawing at such an almost 45 degree angle because of something in your way below the sawing area, like a catch tray, or drawer? Or is that how you like to saw? I thought we should try to be more vertical? Great resizing tips! Also, your rawhide mallet sounded so nice and soft. What's your favorite way to prep a new one for use? Thanks!

    • @OnlineJewelryAcademy
      @OnlineJewelryAcademy  Před 7 lety

      Hey Huskyfluffy, You're very observant. There was stuff in the way that prevented me from sawing in the correct position. Plus, there are wheels on the legs of the bench in the videos. So, I have to be careful not to push it away while we're filming. I never really prep rawhide mallets. They're already soft enough to work with when they're new. Of course, they will soften up the more you use them.
      Thanks for your support! : )

    Hi professor John, what type of solder and what type of Flux did you use? I had a thin gold ring with an amethyst stone that was professionally downsized too much, and now I need to up size it. Anyways, I might try to up size it some day. I only work with copper and silver, but I might make an exception, so I can fix this ring my mother gave me when I was 16. I think it's 18k. Does the small segment need to be the same karat type as the rest of the ring?

    • @OnlineJewelryAcademy
      @OnlineJewelryAcademy  Před 6 lety

      Hi Ingrid, The metal inserted into the ring shank to size the ring up should be of the same karat as the rest of the ring. You'll need solder of the same karat and color as well. Be sure to remove the stones before you begin working. Otherwise, you will break the stones. There are flux mixtures that are formulated for use with gold. But, they aren't that different from the flux that you normally work with to solder silver and copper.
      Thanks for your support! : )

    @dharleeminter2838 Před 8 lety +1

    So if this sizing stock adds one full size, does the thinner one add 1/2 or 1/4? Thanks for this. I bet the piece would be a lot smaller for precious metal!

      Hi Dharlee! We haven't heard from you in a while. Thanks for posting a comment.
      I hope that you are looking forward to a happy holiday season.
      The answer to your question is... Sizing stock comes in various size increments. And, it's only sold in precious metals like gold, silver and platinum. So, specific sizing stock wires to suit your needs are priced according to the metal they are composed of. You can look on-line at various metals suppliers websites and see what I mean more clearly.

      It depends on the ring. If it is just a simple band, the jeweler would anneal the ring and stretch it. If the ring carried a stone, the jeweler might employ this technique. 😀

    Please don't do it like this !!!..... its terrible! Online jewelry academy??? are you serious?
    You have do make a better joint - not only put a piece of metal in! Best ting is a double V Form ant the Ring and the negative ones at the peace that get in!
    So it stays there! heat the whole ring ( especially when its silver) for soldering, with a good torch!
    Afterwards DON'T remotve everything with the file .. takes 2 years... and you have filedust everywhere. Take at first the saw, and only for the fine work, take the file!
    If you don't want to see the joint afterwards, you have to use a very hard solder ( i make myself every Solder for these things! ).
    best regards ....
