  • Is it possible to hang from a head jam with no feet, we find out.
    We're always getting questions of whether or not certain jams are possible, the head jam is one that comes up quite often. We put it to the test to see if a head jam is really possible and feasible it actually is in reality.
    We try a head jam with no feet and a head jam with feet. Don't be as stupid as us, do not try this.

      That's for an average person or a trained professional? I know hanging by the head (and even swinging around, not just statically hanging) is a regular circus act in multiple shows in Cirque de Soleil and around the world (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hair_hang ).

    • @SBW23901

      @@stevenjackson121 Definitely for the average person to get a potential therapeutic effect. I’m sure circus performers who do this train very intentionally to withstand these traction pressures on the neck and head. That being said, you’d probably be hard pressed to find anyone saying that what they’re doing is 100% safe (but really impressive!). Also worth considering the speed at which the head/neck is being loaded. A slow loading has less risk for injury compared to the same force being applied at a faster rate.

      @Ninonator3 Před rokem

      @@SBW23901 spinal traction has no sufficient scientific evidence to show efficacy or potential harm. If there is entrapment of a nerve because of a herniated disk or a different space-occupying process then you need to see a neurosurgeon or a orthopedicsurgeon. Symptoms are treated either surgically or a wait-and-see policy. In addition pain coping strategies or pain relieving medication can be used. Spinal traction isn't and probably never will be an evidence based treatment for any of what you've described.

    Thank you for the hilarious video, Tom and Pete! I just started bouldering but am already pretty hooked up and can't wait to one day try crack climbing (my local gym should get your volumes!)!
    On a constructive note: I think there is a much safer and even useful way to do a head jam. If the volumes are placed wider than your head (ear to ear), you can insert your head looking at the wall. Once you are in, tilt it until cheek (strong muscle!) and top of your head both touch the volumes. So basically from | 0 | to |_0_| . With that tilt it should be (theoretically) possible to jam. Not enough to hang your whole body weight (too dangerous anyways), but strong enough to hold some weight in order to get both hands free. Key is having a strong and secure foothold for both feet, since slipping would be potentially disastrous (unless the volumes are so slippery that it's impossible to hold more than a specific low weight). As for usefulness... I am just a beginner, but I think it could be used in order to get both hands temporarily free. An example would be a three cracks problem: ||# | |# || => First crack needs both hands for jamming, as does the last one. But you need to transition to the last crack. You got a good foothold, but nothing to leg jam (1st crack starts too high and ends immediately), so you jam the first crack with both hands, do a head jam in the second crack - just so you don't lose balance while not having any hands on the wall - and then change both hands to the third/last crack. In my head it seems like a super cool problem I would want to try - but I don't know if it actually works.
    Sorry for the lengthy description, I hope it is conprehensible and makes sense...
    In case you actually read this, thank you for that as well :)!
