- Is it possible to hang from a head jam with no feet, we find out.
We're always getting questions of whether or not certain jams are possible, the head jam is one that comes up quite often. We put it to the test to see if a head jam is really possible and feasible it actually is in reality.
We try a head jam with no feet and a head jam with feet. Don't be as stupid as us, do not try this.

Any word on when the volumes/gloves will be back in stock?
@@nateshipman8031 volumes are available to order, the are manufactured on order. Gloves, spring
When people ask what rock climbing is im sending them this
haha yes do it please :)
Does I did a thing rock climb?!?!?! There's no way I trust the man that reused ass-less chaps to be safe.
It's a good point...do you climb? And if not how on earth did you come across this video 😅
@@WideBoyz Ahaha yeh i boulder!
@@Ididathing haha I just watched a whole bunch of videos from your channel. Deadpan comedy genius 😂
I think the logical procession here is:
“Can you dyno into a head jam”
"Local man decapitates himself in climbing gym"
I spat my drink out when i read this!
Front flip Dyno into head jam.
@@NotOneToFly Local Logical man*

There are relatively few rugby/climbing cross over skills; but taping up you ears like a front row forward might actually help here.
Or wearing a scrum cap.
Entire Global Medical Community: You cannot safely hang a body from the head.
Pete: So let’s try it. I’ll just take this hoody with a hood that could protect my ears and wear it like a turban.
I am still laughing so hard right now!
I lost it when he said "I know! Wide Boyz hoodies" my brain was like "Ah yes, you wear the hoodie!" and then he just starts wrapping
A dyno into a head jam is also known as a Hanging
There's a pretty famous head-jam at Hueco Tanks at an area called Bucket Roof. If I recall correctly the jam is with your chin and the back of your head. You stick your head up into a hueco and then turn to key it in. I think you could replicate it with those volumes on a roof set as a tapered crack.
that sounds absolutely mental, haha
I have done and seen photos of head/hand and head/fist stacks, but a head only moove sounds wild!
I need to see that
I've done something similar ! Like jamming the back of my head on the bottom of a chimney
Love this, but as someone who's been around a lot of machinery I'm deeply concerned about your hearing!
Ear pro is super important!
We need something to cover the ears. *Grabs a hoody* Good thinking, just put the hood on perfect ear protection *Ties hoody around head like a turban....*
For anyone that might be interested: 39 lbs is the max amount of force recommended to safely pull on someone’s head/neck. We do this in physical therapy to help with spinal cord and nerve issues more often than you would think, but like they said, definitely wouldn’t recommend this!
That's for an average person or a trained professional? I know hanging by the head (and even swinging around, not just statically hanging) is a regular circus act in multiple shows in Cirque de Soleil and around the world (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hair_hang ).
@@stevenjackson121 Definitely for the average person to get a potential therapeutic effect. I’m sure circus performers who do this train very intentionally to withstand these traction pressures on the neck and head. That being said, you’d probably be hard pressed to find anyone saying that what they’re doing is 100% safe (but really impressive!). Also worth considering the speed at which the head/neck is being loaded. A slow loading has less risk for injury compared to the same force being applied at a faster rate.
@@SBW23901 manipulating the neck has no therapeutic effect for anyone. Stop selling quack ideas.
@@Ninonator3 Manipulation is a different subject entirely that I won’t even begin to touch on. Mountains of research going in each direction. If you weren’t aware, i was referencing spinal traction, which has been shown to provide symptom relief in patients experiencing nerve root compression due to spinal stenosis.
@@SBW23901 spinal traction has no sufficient scientific evidence to show efficacy or potential harm. If there is entrapment of a nerve because of a herniated disk or a different space-occupying process then you need to see a neurosurgeon or a orthopedicsurgeon. Symptoms are treated either surgically or a wait-and-see policy. In addition pain coping strategies or pain relieving medication can be used. Spinal traction isn't and probably never will be an evidence based treatment for any of what you've described.
The very reason why women live longer than men 😂
You guys are amazing, can't stop laughing.
Use your hands on the side of your head. It makes the head essentially a spacer for a big crack.
The head sandwich stack...
Honestly was having the worst day and this had tears running down my face. Thank you Pete and Tom x
Tom was so confident when first bending his ears in 😂
You are like the old top gear but for climbing (this is a huge compliment).
That's exactly the kind of climbing shinanigans why I love this channel.
I have used my shoulder, back, and, to a much lesser extent, head to press into a no hands rest before, but using the head alone is madness 😂😂
When it all starts with "Just put it in, lets see what happens" you already know its going to be comedy gold XD
Aerial acrobats hang by their necks and spin quite commonly, and there's an old circus skill called Iron Jaw on wikipedia, where they hang on with their mouths. Pete, thanks to your rope soloing video and Q&A I dusted off my kit and finally did a route - thanks very much!
I cried with laughter the whole way through this, love the creativity 😂😂
Thanks. Glad you enjoyed 👍
The nose hook was the ticket!
My Grandad's party trick when we were kids was to lift us up by our heads. I think the issue here is your neck strength to weight ratio - you need to find a really light person (e.g a 6-year-old) to try the full head jam
This is so ridiculous and fantastic. Never thought I could have such mad respect for something like this
My favorite jam!!
PS: the jaw lock is the key
The year is 2047 and the 5th edition of Pete's crack climbing book is released. How to head jam and wrap your head are now essential sections for modern offwidths.
Im just uncontrollably laughing through the whole video. Some of these shots and stills are pure comedic art!!!
Hadn't cried of laughter in ages. Thanks
I don't know why, but this kind of stuff can only be found here.
Hilarious! I had a great time watching this 😁
I forwarded to a random time and saw Pete makin out with some hold......great vid boys
Finally some quality content!!!
That was hilarious 😂. I needed this lol 😂
I've done many a head smears, but never a head jam. Then again being a quadriplegic sounds scary
Shall we try it then? Brilliant Pete.
Thank you for the hilarious video, Tom and Pete! I just started bouldering but am already pretty hooked up and can't wait to one day try crack climbing (my local gym should get your volumes!)!
On a constructive note: I think there is a much safer and even useful way to do a head jam. If the volumes are placed wider than your head (ear to ear), you can insert your head looking at the wall. Once you are in, tilt it until cheek (strong muscle!) and top of your head both touch the volumes. So basically from | 0 | to |_0_| . With that tilt it should be (theoretically) possible to jam. Not enough to hang your whole body weight (too dangerous anyways), but strong enough to hold some weight in order to get both hands free. Key is having a strong and secure foothold for both feet, since slipping would be potentially disastrous (unless the volumes are so slippery that it's impossible to hold more than a specific low weight). As for usefulness... I am just a beginner, but I think it could be used in order to get both hands temporarily free. An example would be a three cracks problem: ||# | |# || => First crack needs both hands for jamming, as does the last one. But you need to transition to the last crack. You got a good foothold, but nothing to leg jam (1st crack starts too high and ends immediately), so you jam the first crack with both hands, do a head jam in the second crack - just so you don't lose balance while not having any hands on the wall - and then change both hands to the third/last crack. In my head it seems like a super cool problem I would want to try - but I don't know if it actually works.
Sorry for the lengthy description, I hope it is conprehensible and makes sense...
In case you actually read this, thank you for that as well :)!
Going back through older content this explains the length of toms neck
Both of your faces are absolutely hilarious.
Fully taped head? Mummy-style. But maybe add eye and breathing holes. Maybe.
as someone who once slipped through the board on the side of my bed and dangled about mid air stuck with my head when i was a kid i can confirm this is possible but probably the worst shit you'll ever feel
I can't remember the last time I laughed so hard at 8:06 and 8:31 - Great video!
We also have a route in Hungary involving a head jam (sort of) called Rhinoceros. It's more of a head cam really; surprisingly pleasant for a no hand rest.
"It makes me feel slightly panicked"
That's your brain telling you that you're in danger lol.
This was just the best.🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Couldn't stop laughing this whole vid.
You boys are so pleasant, but are absolutely savage
Awesome!
really think this needs a revisit. I think its fully possible with the sideways facing position, however the volume in front of the face could be more horizontal giving you almost a shelf for your jaw
Something about two full grown men, in all seriousness, discussing the technique of squishing ones face into solid rock in the hopes of scaling a wall that just really amuses me, but amazes me at the same time too…
I was laughing so hard, that I almost choked while eating
😂 Bejesus I love you guys.
Seems like quality content again😂
Hahahaha this reminds me of a competition I did at a gym years ago. Sport climbing past a roof section I used the left side of my head on the wall and a nice edge on the roof, almost exactly my arm length away. Was able to get such good compression I clipped and rested for a good 10-15 seconds on this before reaching past a nasty cruxy sloper. One of the few people who finished the climb 😂
This was hilarious
I remember watching some doc where I think PSP was talking about Bob Scarpelli using a head-hand stack somewhere in Vedauwoo...
Perfect nose hook application
If I ever find a decent place to do a head jam I am 100% doing it. 😂
I used a head jam out of desperation on the Salathe Wall many years ago. Not 100% was on my head/neck, but it got us past a wide section I'd rather have been aiding if we had the right gear for it.
Which pitch? The one to Lung Ledge?
That's it, I'm taking a gimp mask to my climbing gym
haha, exactly. please take a photo to prove when this actually happens. we believe in you
next try dynoing into an overhand head jam!
another great video featuring tom 'torpedo head' randall
Hand-head-hand stack works. Aswell as fist-head-fist. You also cover your ears by doing the stacks.
Definitely going to try that next time
This video is so dumb and I love it
That was so funny omg, almost died
New idea for partner climbing (Czech), use a tandem sky jumping harness to strap Pete to the front of Tom and you can climb with 4 arms and 4 legs!!!
😂😂 genius idea!
A wide chimney would be perfect for a back-to-back arrangement, too.
Havn't laughed like that in ages 🤣
man would have loved to see a fist forehead jam hahaha
The head sandwich stack, hand head hand.
Theres a route (only a 5.10d) near where i live called "its eating my head" which relies not on a head jam per say, but you have to use your head to get out around a roof.
What you need is a head - hand stack!!
Would Adam Ondra's neck provide an advantage here?
I reckon he could get his head much deeper into a crack
The head-fist-stack was right there...
I know. Can't believe we didn't try it 🤦♂️
07:47 "I'm actually starting to feel quite claustrophobic in there... It's quite strange actually!" He said removing his head from the small gap he had managed to squash it in rofl
A neckbreaking experience! XD
THE FACEJAM!!!
What about turning the jam by 90 degrees? Opening and closing the mouth/jaw might work to get in and out of a head jam. Then you're jamming between a surface over the top of the head and a surface under the chin.
That position is reminding me of those circus performers that hand from the back of their necks (I think).
now i know how adam ondra got made!
Pair of nuggets. Love it
There is a no hand rest in Montagu South Africa where you press your head up into a roof.
You guys should sell Christmas gag gifts that are like crack gloves for your head and ears
You are crazy 😂😂😂
Would using your hands either side of your head with your back to the wall work. i.e mitigate ear rub. You then lift the legs to a heel/toe hook to release the pressure and then hang from your feet?
Can you do a shoulder jam?
I have used my chin to take weight off my fingers; and my second year climbing I saw a climber stuck in a squeeze chimney by the helmet; it took hours to get him out.
It really made me question wearing a helmet on many rock climbs
6:36 otss not gonno wok 😂😂
This is what ensues when a climber is told to use their head.
Try dyno into head jam
A head hand stack could work bc then you could hold some weight on the arms but fit a wider crack
Is it possible to do a finger crack in a roof (like the underside of a concrete bridge)?
I dont want to imagine what they'll jam next
🍆👊
I did a head jam on my SPA assessment, it allowed me to use both hands to thread a rock at the back of a large crack.
This ones a real head scratcher.
Beavis and Butt-Head go climbing 😂🤣
I tried this and now I'm dead!
What about a head-hand stack?
Since this went surprisingly well, now all there is to do is to dyno into head jam....🤔
Earplugs would have been a good idea.🤣
Okay but can you dyno to a head jam?
I'm 5 minutes in BEGGING that at some point you figure out about taping your ears or use a tight neoprene balaclava.. No idea what jams are but blimey it's entertaining
Can't believe we didn't tape our ears 😅
Hanging by your head seems like squeezing your brain out. Pete sounded like a tortured squirrel. Or that’s at least what I imagine a tortured squirrel to sound like.
I've been doing head bars pretty often. :E
So many options here. What about biting onto a hold for a rest?
haha we'd have no teeth left!!
You should try it with a rugbyhelmet, but I think it might be aid?
