We started off calling large stars giants. Then they discovered larger stars and called the super giants. Then they discovered larger stars and called them hyper giants. Right on cue, they discovered larger stars and called them meta giants. So what's next? Super duper extra large mega huge star?

I think this is great but due to the constant motion of the planets and starts going off screen (IE when the shrink) it distorts the sizes and makes things look more different in size then they actually are. Otherwise it was very soothing and fun! :)

+Skorpion gAmer There is an upper limit for how big a star can be, if there was no limit we would see stars as big as galaxies, but because of how the universe works such stars can't form, clumps of matter would rather form clusters than one gigantic star.

    • @jasontoddman7265
      @jasontoddman7265 Před 8 lety +2

+Skorpion gAmer Wrong. A star much larger than the most massive ones we have star are unstable and *immediately* blow themselves apart. Even at 100 solar masses the star will periodically flare up and blow off one or two solar masses until it finally settles down. Even then it will become a hypernova in a mere few million years. A star can be millions of times larger than the sun in volume, but a stable star won't exceed the sun by much more than 100 times in its mass. Stars like Betelguese are in fact so tenuous (that is, lacking density) in most of their visible volume that they are essentially red-hot vacuums.

+Cosmicom Cosmicom They mean the same thing, it's to simplify. 1000 meters is a kilometer, 1,000,000 meters is a megameter, 1,000,000,000 meters is a gigameter, 1 trillion meters is a terameter (I simplified it to AU, astronomical units since a terameter is over five times Earth’s distance from the Sun), 1 quadrillion meters is a petameter (our solar system is about 12 petameters in diameter), 1 quintillion meters is an exameter, 1 sextillion meters is a zettameter (our galaxy is about a tenth of a zettameter in diameter), 1 septillion meters is a yottameter, and 1 octillion meters is a brontometer (the size of the observable universe is about two brontometers).

    Mistakes and corrections:
*Sirius A is white, not blue.
*Red giants, like Arcturus, Antares, Betelgeuse, and Mu Cephei are like gigantic red dwarfs.
*Deneb and Pistol Star’s colors are swapped.
*Pistol Star should be a hypergiant.
    *Betelgeuse is red in color.
*Shadron Soul and VY Masses Majoris don’t exist.
*VV Cephei A uses the picture of the Sun, while VY Canis Majoris uses the picture of Aldebaran.
*UY Scuti is missing before 2013.
*The correct unit for planetary size is megameters (Mm), not milligigameters (mGm)

That is where i paused this video to read the comments. They had the Earth much bigger than Venus. I let that slid. Uranus much bigger than Neptune and Jupiter looks way to big compared to the son. Anyway whatevers because how do we know?! Did we use a tap measure? This reminds me of the text on your car mirror. Objects seen in the mirror may be closer than they appear. We look at this stuff throw reflections in a giant mirror. That tells us NOTHING about how big they actually are!

The largest confirmed star is NML Cygni with a radius of 2,295,000,000 kilometers (1,426,046,881 miles) UY Scuti is larger, but the size hasnt been accurately measured, estimates put its radius at 2,375,828,000 kilometers (1,476,271,071 miles) though it could be as much as 175,000,000 kilometers smaller. The old record holder VY Canis Majoris is 1,975,000,000 kilometers or 1,227,208,100 miles. There is no such thing as a purple hyper-giant and there is not a star named Shadron Soul or VY Masses Majoris!

I know this is going to surprise all of you but UY Scuti broke VY Masses Majoris' record. 62.5 AU is equivalent to 9,375,000,000 km. UY Scuti in one video(which is deleted)had 7250 solar radii which is equal to 67.3 AU. 7250 times 1392684=10,096,000,000 km then divided by 150 million equals 67.3
VY Canis Majoris in another video got 3600 solar radii which broke the record of Shadron Soul.

Not even close! NY Canis Majoris is probably a red giant star with a radius of around 120 times that of the sun (calculated based on the J-H band for the temperature, the K-band magnitude and Gaia DR3 parallax to calculate the bolometric magnitudes).
Unless you mean VY Canis Majoris.

This video is so bad in so many ways. First off, what is MGM? If MGM means megameter (would be Mm which is still a very dumb prefix to use instead of km), then most numbers are incorrect. Ceres' radius is about 475 km. Earth's radius is about 6 370 km. And so on..
Second, if this video is about visualizing size differences then you shouldn't have the objects moving in the z-direction (depth), which in this case is away from the viewer. It messes up the whole idea of the video.
