The full SD card in a budget laptop which is not very powerful to do much serious work (like video editing), can be used as a very cheap storage expansion, especially if you already have one such card.
That Lenovo configuration would make Apple salivate.
Looking at these laptops makes my 2014 Lenovo Y50-70 feel like top of the line for 2024.
You mentioned a price or two which feel very high for the quality, but then again I don't know the exchange rate of Australian dollars and Euros so...yeah.
Looking forward to more videos on them.

You forgot to mention that this HP chassis from the beginning of the video will *definitely* crack after around a year, as they use some very bad brittle plastic. Expect the DC barrel jack to start flailing around and other issues. Oh, and the throttling VRMs... HP's speciality, you will have only 70% of the processor's performance at all times compared to other laptops with U-series processors, because they seem to be hard-locked to 17W and start throttling further later on.
    Never buy anything from HP.

HP have downgraded their product to way too low. now to get a decent build quality laptop you need to buy from the HP premium range.
I have a Hp laptop and it’s still working since 2008, it’s really build like a tank. The build quality it top notch. You can even toss it around nothing would happen. (also I don’t suggest tossing a laptop to test its build quality)

Lel like the quite the presentation that you give. Sheesh these "Hinge plague" is raging hard for the last couple of years, I heard many stories on people that have hinge break from their laptop just because companies are cutting corners by gluing metal hinges into plastic chassis of laptops these days, I can relate by this after buying several modern laptops over the years like 2018-2021 (latest one i have) few i noticed that the hinge is getting stiffer the more as the device get older, the noticable one is my IdeaPad which i bought in 2021, it was 14 inch laptop slimmed down to 13 inch due to maybe the thin bezels. when the laptop is slightly tilted, the lid wouln't want to close which is a bummer since its only like 3 years!!? I also heard that this hinge problem gets worse the larger the diameter of your device was which made my device less effected? Another issue that I have to say u nailed down on is soldered ram, I know some people argue that it is faster if soldered which I cannot deny but there are some people like me who are willing to sacrifice faster speed for upgrability, especially for those who are on tight budget who maybe have a spare cash to buy some ram and not replacing the laptop entirely which is why after all of my experience so far with newer laptops and goes down the rabbit hole of buying old used laptop and I did not regret it :) (Writing this on my Thinkpad X200s from like 2008) Anyway maybe in the future I have plan to save up to grab Lenovo LOQ laptop because they are cheap enough for me and I heard their hinges are good compared to other in its class or maybe some framework laptop if I was desperate enough someday. cheers!! you got urself a sub bud, I can't wait for you to found some decent affortable new laptop for the massess :)

I love your tech reviews. Honest, entertaining and actually in depth and useful. Benchmarks don’t even matter unless the laptop isn’t just a hunk of e-waste out of the box and too many reviewers are lazy and skip that.
Your experience with the XPS 15 mirror mine. I was having so many issues with poor battery life and random throttling as well as the fans being obnoxiously loud. Yet all other reviews only were praising the build quality and screen touting it as a Macbook competitor. Makes me wonder if they are really being honest with their user experience. Paying that much for a Windows laptop really should yield a better designed laptop with effort put into the software to make sure the user experience marches the price. I have yet to find a premium windows laptop worth it however.
Surface is shit also. The closest to decent I have found are high end thinkpads and latitudes.
Do you have any recommendations for well put together lower end laptops (any category) and/or actual premium windows laptops?

I have a version of that HP that has an 11th-gen i5 and 16 GB of RAM. Definitely a weird combination, but it was what I needed for my college class that required running some VMs, and it was a decent price. It also has an IPS panel, so getting a more expensive model can help quite a bit. The frame is a bit fragile, now missing a chunk around the HDMI port, but fortunately the hinge doesn't seem to be affected.

Imagine the people that want to buy their kid a laptop for school or something, and go buy one of these. Happy how cheaply they got a real laptop, and how happy their kids will be 😁 Well you have to start somewhere and these cheap scrap heaps teach you how to use the most, out of nothing. Like hacking tools to make the N4100 CPU 7W to run at 15W and double the performance. Or how to manage the virtual memory so it isn´t all stuttery with that big 4GB of ram running Windows 10.

    • @one_step_sideways
      @one_step_sideways Před 4 měsíci +1

But what if you just buy a ThinkPad T480 that sells for $200-250 used? Linux could always use more RAM, and it doesn't need 8 cores. It needs fast and powerful cores, like 4 of them, with 8 threads. And the T480 can be upgraded to 64GB RAM, and you can install an IGZO low-power panel (like I did on mine, for $60, which made things way better) and a 72Wh battery.
If you're going to run some Docker or especially Minikube, you've got to have more than 16GB RAM. Only then you can think about having more than 4 cores and 8 threads. That's why you should buy something like Beelink EQ12 mini-PC with the Intel N100, which has the same cores, 4 of them instead of 8, but can also be upgraded to 32GB RAM with a single DDR5 stick, which will be drastically better for this processor compared to DDR4, which works badly in single-channel. KDE belongs in the trash, by the way.

best build quality budget gaming laptop should be Asus TUF series. In 2023 I touched a lot and Asus software works good.
Dell has mostly garbage touchpads, buggy laggy software. Lenovo sponsors onlyfans models. MSI terrible build quality, they put some trash foam under touchpad for it to mimic smooth presses. Acer also sponsors onlyfans models. Clevo modifying manufacturers probably have worse build quality and suck at portability.
