Blacked-back Puffback (Dryoscopus cubla) Bird Call Video - Different Puffback Calls
I have always been fascinated by the Black-backed Puffback (Dryoscopus cubla), previously known as the Puffback Shrike. I heard them many times in my youth while visiting the Kruger National Park, but yet only laid my eyes on these secret birds when I was in my adult years. The sounds that a Black-backed Puffback makes, just seems to make it an intriguing bird species. At the time of writing this, I am still yet to photograph the male of the Puffback species.
These small passerines are characterised by their distinct black plumage, accented by a contrasting white belly and, in males, a conspicuous black "backpack" of feathers on their upper back. Their name originates from the male's unique habit of puffing out these feathers during courtship displays. Black-backed Puffbacks are primarily insectivorous, preying on a variety of insects including beetles, caterpillars, and ants, which they glean from foliage using their sharp, curved bills. They are often found in wooded savannahs and dense thickets where they build cup-shaped nests from twigs and grass. With their striking appearance and melodious calls, these birds contribute to the rich biodiversity of Kruger National Park, making them a fascinating subject for birdwatchers and researchers alike.
In this video you will see a female Black-backed Puffback at Letaba Rest Camp, bouncing from branch to branch. You will also hear all the various bird calls the Black-backed Puffback makes. I was exstatic to finally get a Puffback on video!
