December 22nd, 2023. My business network scheduled a "Christmas Party", there was going to be snacks, drinks and good times...cool I'm there! Couple of weird things about this, it was at one of those painting studios where a bunch of people paint on a square piece of canvas and everyone compares at the end to see how they did and probably take a photo for social media. On top of that it was after hours, and we were supposed to have a "Christmas party" here, weird. When I got there, all of my colleague were on one side of the room and a dance instructor with his assistant was on the other side of the room. "This ain't no Christmas party!!" I said in my head. I couldn't leave now that everyone saw me walk in. Now I had to painful process of getting through this 3 hour dance class as a single guy, in a room full of couples. I ended up dancing with one of our late colleagues and the instructor's assistant.
Well, turns out it was great! As a 29-year-old single guy working on his photography business all the time, I didn't get out much. Dancing was a nice break from the daily slog. I played a lot of sports growing up and was naturally coordinated, so I picked things up much quicker than my colleagues. When the instructor taught us the basic step and demonstrated the next move we were learning. I simply looked at what he did and copied him step for step, his experience assistant was impressed, and her face lit up! I can't deny this felt incredible, played it cool and ultimately, that is was got me hooked on dancing, we learned tango fyi.
Soon after, I signed up for tango lessons and started learning. But what I realized after that first "Christmas Party" class was how deprived I was of human touch. I once read that people need 4, 5 second hugs a day, almost like daily vitamins but for your hormones. I live alone and work on my business all the time, so I wasn't getting close to that. On top of that I also realized after that first class, a couple of days later I was still buzzing. I realized that clubs nowadays, where the only dancing going on these days is jumping while fist pumping, grinding and solo dancing. It might be fun for a night and have done it myself but seemed like the junk food of dancing, you do it to get a quick hit of dopamine and when you settle shortly after your dopamine goes below baseline. Whereas dancing tango with another person seems like a cold shower, no, not in the way you might think. Like a cold shower, your dopamine spikes and remains at high levels for hours after, and you don't crash below baseline, at least that's what it feels like. Similar to cold showers and exercise.
I've been dancing tango for 3 months and improved so much the instructor invited me to be on his performing team, I obliged :D But since I've started I've got really interested in pairs dancing of all kinds, not just tango and I started thinking. Pairs dancing specifically is great for basically all aspects of your life. It's great for your mental and physical health, like balance, Parkinsons, like Anna mentioned, a great mood booster. Great for sexual selection, we could sing and dance before we had language so, how do you think we communicated sexually before language. A woman who's danced with a room full of men knows who she can trust and knows who she has chemistry with, whether they're a good dancer or not. Dancing also civilizes men for that selection process, they can't be creeps or else they'll just be ostracized. Dancing is also the best icebreaker! Ask someone to dance and after dancing for a few songs both partners know if they want to continue with conversation, more dancing, etc. There's so much to like about dance, but we don't seem to do it anymore, and it's quite sad.
So that's my dance story, I've been doing a ton of research on the affects of dance on people, neurologically, psychologically, socially, etc.

I love this! I wonder if I can get your input on this: I really enjoy dancing and watching dance choreography in my spare time and sometimes if I watch them long enough, I will close my eyes and suddenly visualize people dancing. I'm not consciously coming up with routines and moves, the bodies don't belong to anyone in particular, it's just figures moving around in sync and doing very particular movements. Seems like there's something more than just your normal phosphenes?

I'm a suboxone patient, I've been on the medication for 5 years under the supervision of a doctor (obviously way too long), though I didn't seriously start tapering until a few months ago, which is coincidentally when I started dancing on and off for 8 hours a day almost every day, mainly since my mom passed away Jan 21 (life sucks right now as you can see lol) but I've continued to dance almost every day because it helps me so much with endorphin production. Like I felt like crap all the time before I started dancing throughout the day, and it's made tapering a much easier process. I'd been searching for years for different solutions or exercises to help with dopamine and feeling better so I could get off this medication, but nothing really worked well aside from Yoga, but that ended up not being my thing. But I love dance, it's like actually changed my life. I just found this video from wondering if it's all in my head, or if dance specifically works well for this, and you confirmed my suspicions so thank you lol
It's funny how life leads you down paths that end up being what you were looking for the whole time. I've always loved Michael Jackson and Prince, and all the musicians that most of us loved growing up, but I've always just been a stationary musician lol but after I started dancing every day I feel a thousand times more confident as a musician, like I've found it easier to define for myself what I want to go for, and I do think I know myself better aesthetically and spiritually through dance. I feel like it helps me to tap into some ancient primal instinct that we're all connected with through dance and music. But yeah I'm so hooked now, I'll never go back to just standing still with an instrument or microphone lol like I can't believe I ever considered not dancing live, it's crazy.

Keep strong. Dont forget that despite the struggles and madness in this world today, God is full of justice, mercy and love.
Justice said we broke His perfect law - causing the world's previous perfection to be destroyed - and therefore we deserve Hell (like a punishment in any legal system but this is eternal as His perfect law is eternal too). Don't think you fit in that category? Ever done one of these?: lying, stealing - regardless of how small the object EVER, hating others - which is murder in God's perfect law, lusting (plus God sees our entire thought life). Justice says "the soul that sins shall die" - if we break one in thought/word/deed it's as if we're guilty of all of them. Quite simply, living by the law (which is doing everything perfectly) is impossible for sinful humans
. The law shows us that 1. We will die in Hell if we fail to follow it and 2. We cannot save ourselves BUT, 3. God's perfect, immovable law points us to Christ, who followed and fulfilled the law in thought, word and deed perfectly in our place. He did what we couldn't and did it on our behalf. He was then sentenced to death on a cross, and took our personal punishment for our sin, paying our penalty (like paying our fine) completely FOR us, and has given us freedom.
If we turn from the sins we have committed and repent (pursue the opposite direction of love through Christ) He will, overtime, recreate us back into that previously perfect image through The Holy Spirit which Jesus sends to all who accept Him as their personal Lord and Savior of their life. He will help us through the struggle, the stress, and anything we experience in the world. It's about letting Christ in to guide and teach you and obeying Him through His power (not ourselves, we need Him to help us as it's impossible without depending on His power and instruction).
He is our substitute in His life, death and resurrection. He essentially rewrote history in our place so that, if you believe in Him, it will be as if you had never sinned if you accept Christ's death as our own in our place.
He is in Heaven right now preparing a place for us so that He can take His faithful, believing children home with Him when He returns. He will ressurrect us from death when He returns, giving mercy to those who accept His love, instruction and teachings in their life, and give justice to those who refuse it.
He doesn't want ANY of us to go to Hell and die for continuing in evil and rejecting His way to life, thats why He died FOR us. Hes giving EVERYONE a chance, He wants everyone to take the free gift of salvation from Hell. He wants us to be His and begin to follow His life of love and service through His power and abiding (staying) with Him. So long as we keep our hearts near to Christ through His strength, strive to follow His will of perfect love revealed in the Bible, and let Him lead in the midst of (very certain) pitfalls and struggles, we will, in time, win the ultimate victory over sin, pain and DEATH through Christ. Even if you are willing to be made willing, pray for Jesus to come in and He will do what we can't. Give us The Holy Spirit who will guide us in the right way.
Christ says in John 16:33: I have told you these things, so that in Me you may have [perfect] peace. In the world you have tribulation and distress and suffering, but be courageous [be confident, be undaunted, be filled with joy]; I have overcome the world.” [My conquest is accomplished, My victory abiding.]
    - (AMPLIFIED version)
NOTE: You are NEVER too sinful or messed up that God cannot turn your life around through Jesus. EVER. Regardless of what you've done or what you're going through you CAN make it through Jesus.

  • @theultimatereductionist7592

Unless you quantify any of these benefits and compare those benefits to the downside of whatever work one puts into dance (or whatever activity you are claiming benefits of), your conclusions don't mean anything. Sure, benefits exist. That's universally true about everything. How much and how much compared to the cost, cost in time, opportunity cost compared to doing something more useful, etc.
