      I've watched P Bride countless times since 1987, Rob Reiner is a genius. After watching several of these "Reaction" watches of P Bride, I learned why most people do not list this movie *first* as a "comedy".
      Yes, it is Many, Many things, but for those who pay attention with great detail to Every word spoken and all the nuances, the Rare comedic genius comes to light. MOST people simply do not catch the subtle humor. For P Bride fans, make sure you pay attention to every line and angle and appreciate the brilliance of this amazing Comedy.
      Most folks even miss some Obvious bits of humor; like when the smug (but skilled tracker) Humperdinck sniffs the *odorless* Iocane and exclaims, "Iocane! I'd bet my life on it!" 🤣❤🙏🏽

    My college roommate was a big fan of the book, so when the film was released, we took three buses to go across Milwaukee to get to the one theater that had it in preview the night before the official opening. The four of us were one of only two groups in the entire theater, but we had a fantastic time nonetheless! When it came out on tape, I showed it to my family, but no one else really loved it, sadly. I can quote the entire thing.

      Cary Elwes also (in recent years) wrote a book about his experiences fighting to get the part, and filming The Princess Bride, and it's really funny and sweet, especially when he talks about Andre the Giant and how it was working with him. It's a fun read.

  • @sherrysink3177
    @sherrysink3177 Před 3 lety +26

    "Let me 'splain. (pause) No. There is too much. Let me sum up." I cannot count how many times I've quoted that whenever I needed to explain something to someone. (Lol)
    The entire movie is so quotable and funny. I love the humor, the sweetness, the drama, the structure of the story, all of it. I think it's so clever and fun, and it's something I watched with my parents and siblings when I saw it for the first time, so it's a great memory for me, all of us sucked up into the story and laughing so much and just really enjoying it.
    And while I love every part of the story, I think Inigo Montoya finally getting to say those iconic words to the man who killed his father is so huge and such a great reward after he told that story to the man in black in the beginning of the movie. Just the way he says it, and then keeps saying it, building in intensity, it's so powerful, it brings me to tears. And like you said, for a moment there, it seems like he's not going to complete his quest after all these years, because of that stab wound. Like you, when I saw it for the first time, I was like, "Noooooo! No, it can't go down like that." So I think it's one of the best parts, when he finally gets to say, "I want my father back, you son of a bitch." YES. :)

    This is one of my favorite movies form childhood! During all the press for the 25th anniversary the actor that plays Inigo opened up about what inspired him during filming. A few years before filming he lost his father to cancer, so while making the movie he started viewing the six fingered man as cancer. He said that when he got to kill the man, for a moment, it felt like he had his father back.

  • @dbaxter604
    @dbaxter604 Před 3 lety +9

    My favorite scene in this film, is when Inigo is fighting the six fingered man and continues to repeat his catch phrases over and over again. What's extra amazing about this is that the emotion you see in the actor, is real. Shortly before, his father died from a disease, I believe it was cancer, and during the scene he was imagining that he was confronting the physical embodiment of the cancer that killed him and worked through the loss of his father in the moments that we see on screen.

    • @robinwiggins5848
      @robinwiggins5848 Před rokem

      It really fits perfectly, because the original author of the book purposely made the six finger man that way to also represent cancer since that is how his dad also died. He says so in his author's note in one of the re-released of the original book.

    There is something about the perfect delivery that places; "I want my Father back you son of a bitch!", right up there with greatest lines from the most dramatic, or intense action, flick's lines.
    Perfect movie. (I pray it NEVER gets rebooted nor remade!)

    Love this film. The cast was (is!) perfection. I see someone already pointed out that Billy Crystal was Miracle Max, but basically everyone in the movie is someone great. Fred Savage was already big from _The Wonder Years_ when he was cast as the boy in this, and they got _Columbo_ as the Grandpa. There's Cary Elwes (from _Robin Hood: Men in Tights_ and _Saw_ and such), there's Mandy Patinkin (from _Homeland_ and _Criminal Minds_ and Broadway fame) and André the Giant (who's just ... André the Giant). Robin Wright was so young here, it's almost hard to believe she was also Claire in _House of Cards_ and General Antiope in _Wonder Woman_ and Jenny in _Forrest Gump._ And everyone from Vizzini to Humperdinck to the Impressive Clergyman was a perfect choice.
    Glad you enjoyed this.

    I was a big prowrestling fan growing up, so when I found out that Andre The Giant had starred in a movie I had to watch it. To this day The Princess Bride is the only romantic comedy that not only I enjoy watching, but can stand to watch. Andre was the only reason I watched it as a kid, but as I got older it just got better and better as I started understanding the jokes more and more. Billy Crystal was so taken with Andre that he actually wrote the movie My Giant for Andre and himself to star in. Unfortunately, Andre passed only 6 years after this movie came out, so he and Billy didn't get the chance to work together again.

    Mandy Patinkin's father actually died of cancer right before he was hired for this role, and he said he harbored a lot of anger because of it. So when he says the line "I want my father back, you son of a bitch", he said he imagined the cancer as a person so he could actually confront the thing that killed his father. And you can tell there's real emotion in that line.

    Not long ago I was in a sandwich shop and the guy taking my order, who was around 18, was bopping to the song that was playing over the speakers. It was Money for Nothing by Dire Straits. He asked his buddies, "Hey, what's the name of this song?" I told him the name of the song and said, "It's an oldie by Dire Straits, whose lead was Mark Knopfler. Did you know that he also composed the music to The Princess Bride?" He looked at me blankly and said, 'What's The Princess Bride?" At that point, his coworkers started in on him: "Dude! Haven't you ever seen The Princess Bride?! It's a great movie! You'd better watch it!"
    Asking around since then, it seems a lot of young people today have never seen the movie, and some have never heard of it. What I like about the movie the most, I think, is that, despite the old game system the young boy (Fred Savage) was playing when his grandfather arrived (Peter Falk), the movie is timeless and can be enjoyed for years to come.
    If you're interested, there are some great videos here on CZcams of the actors talking about the movie. I just watched one where Rob Reiner, the director, had a fun discussion with Cary Elwes (Westley) and Robin Wright (Buttercup). One of the people they talked about is André the Giant, who played Fezzik, and what a sweetheart he was. He weighed about 520 lbs, was a professional wrestler, and sadly died when he was only 46. André suffered from acromegaly, in which the body doesn't stop secreting growth hormone and his heart finally gave out. He died after attending his own father's funeral in Paris. Those who suffer from acromegaly are not expected to live beyond 40, so he beat the odds by a few years.
    If you have had a chance to watch the new comedy based on the life of Dwayne Johnson (The Rock), it jumps around in time to different parts of his life. When he was young, though, his father was a wrestler and André the Giant was a frequent guest at their home. The actor who plays André does a good job mimicking his speech pattern.
    Finally, one other tidbit I learned recently. Mandy Patinkin, who played Inigo Montoya, had lost his own father to cancer a few months before filming the movie, which may have made his line to the six-fingered man, "I want my father back, you son of a bitch!" all the more poignant.

    This was in the middle of one of the greatest run of movies from any director
    This is Spinal Tap
    The Sure Thing
    Stand By Me
    The Princess Bride
    When Harry met Sally
    Misery
    A Few Good Men
    We have horror, mockumentory, the best romantic comedy of all time, a military law drama, the coming of age film and The Princess Bride.
    Only The Sure Thing wouldn’t be considered a classic in its genre

    All of these actors continued to have big careers pretty much, The grandfather, Peter Faulk was already famous. Wallace Shaun, who played Vizzini is currently on the show Young Sheldon. Unfortunately Andre the Giant, who played Fezzik passed away not long after the movie but he was already famous as a wrestler.

    Numerical ratings of movies is a mug's game. One direction or the other, you're going to end up being boxed in eventually. It just seems to stress reactors unnecessarily where most viewers would be just as happy with like or not like and an explanation. Best. Leo.

      @nickflix8657  Před 3 lety +1

      You’re not wrong. To be honest the rating system is kind of for me too as even before CZcams would still come up with a number in my head about how I feel about it. But realized I don’t need to give every movie a rating just as long as I talked about the movie and how I felt.

    I've been around for over half of a century (dear God, how is that possible???). I've seen a lot of movies, and although this isn't my favorite of all time, it really is the perfect movie. I didn't fall in love with it until many years after its release, but I know every line. This movie made Robin Wright, Cary Elwes and Mandy Patinkin, and inspired countless others to learn about the gentle giant that was Andre. I personally don't know a man or woman that doesn't watch this without the dream in their heart rising to the surface.
    The more you watch this one, the better it gets. Thank you for reacting and connecting with this old guy by connecting at the right points to this movie.
