BMW Z4 E89 iDrive MMI Installation, Part 1 CarPlay Android Auto

  • EDIT** It's been brought to my attention that in some countries the passenger has a knee airbag. Having this will mean that you'll need to remove two 10mm nuts and a couple of extra screws to allow you to remove the glovebox. Be careful when removing the airbag, and I'd recommend removing the battery before unplugging the airbag and allow the system to discharge completely for 15 minutes. Do not have the car switched on while the airbag is disconnected.
    Hello and welcome to my latest video.
    Today I cover the installation of an MMI (Multi-Media Interface) box into my iDrive system on my E89. With this Plug-N-Play box you will have access to various apps from your phone. It’ll give you CarPlay for iPhones and Android Auto for Android phones. It will give you a wireless connection for your iPhone and wired for all Android phones and wireless for certain Android phones (I’m currently running a Samsung A70 and can use wireless, so not all of the lists of compatible phones are correct). It can also give you the ability to have a front and rear camera attached as well, but after running a rear camera on my E89 for over a year and half now a really don’t recommend them as they are too low down to be of use. If you do decide to fit a camera then I also have a video on that as well, here... • BMW E89 Z4 Parking Sen...
    In this Part 1 video I run through the components that come with the box kit and how to install them into your E89. In Part 2 I’ll run through the set-up process of connecting your phone wirelessly for both the iPhone and Android and then also show the various settings that are available in the box settings page along with the interaction with the iDrive controller and steering wheel controls.

    Thank you for watching and I hope you like it.
    On a personal note, thank you to everyone that has watched, liked and subscribed to my videos and channel, it is very much appreciated. I am not going to ask for likes and subscriptions like most do on CZcams, if you want to then that is great, if not then fair enough I hope you’ve got something out of it. I make these videos to help other owners out, I’m not an expert in any way at all I just do my research and give it a go.
    I mention in the video that previously, as you’ll note from some of my other videos, I had the Android touchscreen fitted and now in this video I have the BMW iDrive system, well hopefully that is also going to be a future How-To video as this summer I did a full retrofit. Don’t get me wrong, there was nothing wrong with the Android screen, it was working perfectly and I really liked it, in fact I still recommend them for anyone without the iDrive system, it’s just that I always wanted iDrive and this year I’ve found all of the components and the time to fit it, along with this MMI box to give me everything I wanted. There is one niggle at the moment and that is that I’ve still not got the Bluetooth working from the OE components (although I do have it through the MMI box) and that is why these videos are delayed and not in order. I will produce the iDrive video just as soon as I can rectify the Bluetooth issue, then I can show every aspect of the retrofit together.

      Good question. As I've had both I can say that although the Android screen is a sharper HD image, it would only really show if you was watching a movie and even then it's still a small screen.
      Saying that the original screen is perfectly OK for map guidance in both map and satellite mode (Google Maps).
      In fitting tge Android screen you would loose the up/down movement as they are fixed. Although they do give you more features, I've motioned mine since I removed it as I'm always on Android Auto anyway.

    • @BMWZ4Mods

      As this unit has the sound output via the AUX socket, then I'd check that the socket is working properly first. Plug something else into it and see how the sound is then. If it's the same then you've got an issue with the socket, the wire from it or the mulf/combox.
      If it runs fine then you've probably got an issue with the mmi box.

    Hello. I am following your instructions. And I am a little confused about the can bus cable. I understand we do not need the CarPlay cable as you stated. Does this mean that the original cable remains plugged into the idrive controller?
    So no extra cables to piggyback into the I drive controller in the centre console?
    I have tried this and removed the white loop wire you show and then plugged the 2 connectors together. When I do this the screen does not pop up and the radio is playing but the volume seems to not be stable, volume goes up and down.
    If I unplug these plugs and return the white loop wires, the screen pops up but the I drive controller does not function the radio plays
    What have I missed, what am I doing wrong. Something wrong on these connections I guess, but not sure what I have missed.
    Any advice would be most. Helpful. Thanks in advance
    Ps I have the cic system with maps and hard drive etc

    • @BMWZ4Mods
      @BMWZ4Mods  Před 2 lety

      I believe the problem here is that some of the MMI boxes may now have updated software which is altering how the canbus wire needs to be attached. I can only suggest trying different options with the connections you have until you find the correct one.
      Please note I filmed that over a year ago now and it was correct then, it may have changed depending on which supplier you got yours from. All I can say is that it was correct then and I've done a few since all of which were the same with the last one being about 6 weeks ago.

    • @BMWZ4Mods
      @BMWZ4Mods  Před 3 lety

      Hi there, alas I doubt you can get hold of this microphone cable separately. The cable is a 3.5mm jack to twin microphone male and female connectors (twin as in two different connectors dependent on OE microphone connector for specific BMW models). Unfortuneateley as I do recommend that it is used (otherwise you wont have use of the microphone for the MMI box) then I wouldn't think anyone would have a spare, you could try one of the many suppliers and see if they could help you. Please note though, I could not guarantee that this lead would work with the Android screen input though, it is the correct plug but it could be down toother factors.

    I really appreciate the time you put into these videos. I received the Andream unit also with no instructions. So this has been a big help. I have had one issue with my install which I hope you have some insight on. When I turn on the car, I have a red screen where iDrive should be. I have tried the CIC reboot, but that is not the issue. When I hold the menu to switch to MMI, that setup is working fine. CarPlay appears, audio, steering wheel controls, everything works. I am just missing iDrive when I change source. If I reverse the LVDS cables which some recommended in the forums, iDrive reappears, but I can no longer switch to the MMI source, by holding the Menu button. Any advice, have I missed a step along the way?

    • @BMWZ4Mods
      @BMWZ4Mods  Před 3 lety

      Definitely sounds like a LVDS cable issue to me though. The red screen appears when the screen unit doesn't receive a signal.
      So (not teaching granny to suck eggs (never did understand that phrase!))
      Headunit LVDS OUT to MMI box LVDS IN. MMI box LVDS OUT to original LVDS cable going to screen.
      Physically make sure they are run correctly.
      I'm assuming you haven't used the iDrive controller adaptor loom at all from the box loom to the controller? And you have linked B to L? As faulty canbus connection will mean it won't work correctly.
      Hope that helps.

    • @jsharvey
      @jsharvey Před 3 lety

      @@BMWZ4Mods Thanks for the prompt response. I also thought it may be an issue with the LVDS cable coming from the head unit, but as I mentioned if I switch the cables, and plug that into the LVDS OUT of the MMI rather than the IN, iDrive instantly appears, but I lose the MMI going to the Display. So my only theory is, do I have a faulty port on the MMI box for LVDS IN?
      I did make the mistake of using the IDrive Controller loom, as I started with no instructions, but I have completely removed that, and I linked B to L, as you directed. After contacting Andream, they sent over some usless Instructions. Both their instructions and the labeling on the loom, never a suggestion of connecting B to L anywhere, or the elimination of the iDrive Controller loom. I read some forum posts of people leaving the cars off for a while and it just starts working. So I disconnected the battery last night and let it sit, but still the same issue.

    • @BMWZ4Mods

      @@jsharvey so to explain how the box works....
      The video output signal from the headunit is interrupted by the box when tge MENU button is pressed for 3 seconds. It the outputs its own video stream to the screen.
      If it's not allowing the original video signal through then, as you say, it's either faulty within the box or one of the new cables is faulty in some way.
      Now I'm leaning towards the box being faulty, so I'd suggest contacting the supplier and see what they say.

    • @jsharvey
      @jsharvey Před 3 lety

      @@BMWZ4Mods Thanks for the help on this. I couldn't make the Andream unit work, and their support has been challenging to work with. I assume this issue is hardware-related. As I purchased the box from Bimmer-Tech and it's working. There was some confusion with Bimmer-Tech's own install instructions, as they also have a harness to both the iDrive controller and parking brake, which it states to install, but with that harness, none of the electronics in my Z4 35is worked. (The car was pitch black but the engine would fire up) Interestingly enough, if I kept the harness attached to the iDrive controller but disconnected it from the parking brake, everything works. I didn't test this configuration with the Andream as I was frankly fed up with it. The Bimmer-Tech solution which I know is similar hardware is 3x more expensive, but their support is top-notch.

      @@BMWZ4Mods Lol! I just watched part 2 and was wondering about the i-drive system (which I don't have, but interested in as well). BTW, your description/tutorial is the best bar none! I think in a previous video you had issues having the i-drive control working correctly? I see that in part two it seems to be working flawlessly. Great Job! Looking forward to seeing the i-drive retrofit.

      @@xr500t thanks for your kind comments, it's appreciated.
      Yes the problem with the iDrive controller was that a genuine one doesn't work fully with the Android screen unless you already have the iDrive headunit. And you also can't use an Android controller with an iDrive headunit.
      But as I've now gone fully iDrive (unit, screen and controller) I have no issues at all. I intend to document all of my findings and problems when I do the retrofit video for iDrive. 👍

      Great set of instructional videos, thank you. Can I ask if the screen in this clip is also upgraded? It looks like it’s slightly sharper than my 35i (2010) screen? 🙏

    I installed the module but via carplay I can't hang up the call. does it have to do with settings? everything else seems to work fine. thanks for your videos!!

      How do you answer the call? Via the steering wheel buttons? I doubt it'll be a setting. It may depend on which manufacturers box you have as well, but I'd imagine CarPlay works the same on all of them.

      @@BMWZ4Mods Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately my steering wheel controls are faulty, I will have to have them replaced. I use the joystick and select on the screen. Unfortunately it doesn't work to hang up the call. The box looks the same as the one in the video.

      @djmovemusic unfortunately as I'm on Android, I don't get to see the CarPlay phone screen, so is there the phone down (red) displayed on the screen while you're on a call? And if so, can you scroll to it?
      The other option is you're going to need your steering wheel buttons fixed.
