    This is a couple car review of the Mercedes-Benz AMG A35 hatch hatchback. There are few true hot hatchbacks sold in North America, in fact this AMG A35 hatchback isn't sold in the United States, only Canada. With 302hp and 295lb.-ft of torque, this AMG A35 hatch is closest to the current VW Golf R in power and attitude. However, this compact luxury hatchback has a stiffer suspension, is lower to the ground and has an upscale interior that look much more polished and upscale compared to the VW Golf R. The other hot hatch sold in North America is the Honda Civic Type R but that is only FWD. This AMG A35 is enhanced by AMG to provide a very sporty ride, quick shifts from the 7-speed dual clutch transmission and a very willing engine. The interior of this compact luxury hatchback is a standout thanks to the Mercedes-Benz MBUX interface. This AMG A35 comes standard with the upgraded screen sized, both are 10.25 for the instrument cluster and infotainments screen. The back seat and cargo area are not big but this car is most likely going to be purchased by a single person or couple. The Mercedes AMG A35 hatchback is capable of a run to 100km/h in 4.7 second but we were able to get it done in 5.4 with winter tires and cold temperatures. The AMG A35 hatch comes standard with Heated front seats, AMG performance steering wheel in Nappa leather, Power driver seat with memory, 64-colour LED ambient lighting , Panoramic Sunroof, LED headlamps, tail lamps & a high performance inside , lighting system and 18-inch wheels. Unfortunately the AMG A35 hatchback is not available with a heated steering wheel.

    Thank you Zack for explaining to people why some like buying luxury products. And before the trolls all gang up on us, you have your own luxuries too. I don't go to the movie theatre, I don't order alcohol at a restaurant, I don't buy massive unnecessary toys for my house like a hot tub, swing set, massive grill, a motorhome, 1 ton pickup that hardly gets used properly, DVDs, too much food to stuff the fridge and my stomach, too many shoes, too much clothes, coffee that's brewed for me, lunches made for me (yeah even fast food counts), go on vacations every year, or worse of all, buy the lottery or go to the casino. So not all of those who like to buy luxury products are "rich" or spend indescriminantly. They just make it work by sacrificing somewhere else that you would not.

      Yes I agree...as someone who’s owned a luxury vehicle for 7yrs in the past, not only are you paying for the badge, build quality, materials and engineering that come with it but as well as the “exclusivity” that Zack & Andrea mentioned. Also true that most non-luxury buyers will say luxury cars are a waste of money but of course luxury owners disagree. There’s a reason luxury cars sell...I am however in the middle camp. It all depends on your priorities! After spending over $100K after 10yrs on 2 vehicles I realized and became practical and now just own mainstream brands. Heck my latest brand new car I only paid $28K CAD (cash all-in price)!

    • @IKhanNot
      @IKhanNot Před 3 lety +1

      @@Brian-jv8iy Not true. MB is making a killing on their basic A, CLA, GLA and C Class models and move tons of them yearly regardless of market. They won't stop their cash cow cars as not everyone can afford or care to pay $100k for a car that will be worth $35k in 5 years. They referred to this car as a luxury car because of it's features and it is more upmarket compared to a standard A220. The term luxury isn't just meant for Rolls Royce, it can be used in many more situations.

I've always been enamored with lateral g handling figures. I wish you could post lateral g's figures especially for the sportier cars. Somehow the most important part of my comment is missing: 1. My friends experience with his new 2019 Mercedes GLA250 ( A 3 day old car & 7 weeks in the dealership because of a defective steering sensor which took Mercedes a long time to troubleshoot.) 2. My modified 2018 BMW X1 which is the best new vehicle I've ever purchased. Not a single trip back to the dealership in the first 2 years. I think it makes a great hot hatch. I'm 65 years old and have been driving cars since I was 18. I've owned such a long list of cars that it would be too long to list here and that doesn't include all the short and medium term rentals, especially in the last 20 years! Hi Zack and Andrea! I like that this review was a bit longer with more information. 👍
    I think MB and BMW are smart to expand (ok dilute) their performance brands because they leverage the name to increase sales. In the past I might’ve accused them of selling out, but the general performance of full-on AMG and M cars isn’t accessible on public roads. The only reason to buy them is for prestige - not that there’s anything wrong with that. 👌

To illustrate ; alternative number 3 , Civic R I understand on paper , but worlds apart in terms of market niche and potential clients. The First and fourth alternative yes, but Golf R and Civic ....nope No manual transmission is a show stopper for enthusiasts and Mercedes knows this but doesn't care because its not marketed for people like me. Hi Mike, Andrea. I test drove this for a day, was considering it (in Ottawa, Canada) along with many other in this price range. Your $58,500 spec is exactly what mine was, and with high lease rates, over 400 biweekly is ridiculous for this. Although it's a fun, planted, true hot hatch the interior quality "looks good" but seat adjustments and other parts are cheap plastic and obviously not on the same level as their other AMGs. Also, over every bump you could hear the spoiler shake, and other squeaks. This car was new!!! It will drive anyone like my nuts hearing those sounds every drive. End of the day, for a lease, the upcoming Golf R is going to be faster, just as fun to drive, and $10k less.
    I'm actually going with the 3.3T Genesis G70 at the exact same price as this car spec, but just as fun, if not more, a much better value, lease rate, and no BS packaging sales crap to get what you want. Mercedes forces you to upgrade to things in such a frustrating way.

      Motormouth I thought of that, especially a new car in that "burn in period" of the first 1000k, but I have been testing a lot of cars - TLX, new IS, Genesis G70, Golf R and that A35 was the only one that was noticeably "stinky" standing over a few feet away. All that to say, someone before me could have pushed it too much . I've seen radiator hoses leak on Nissans when pushed to hard when new. Glad you reviewed that car as I was also quite pleased with it, overall. My gut just told me to avoid committing 4 years to it, especially having a Lexus currently, and the possible issues these overpriced German brands have.

    I like the new Mercedes AMG hot hatch however I prefer the VW Golf R and believe it's also more reliable. However you guys forgot another hot hatch. The BMW X2M and that one is ok too except that you either like the design or don't. I had a VW GTI when I was younger, 1985 and it was Motor Trend car of the year. Oddly enough my first choice was a Honda however they were back ordered and arrogant about it. I never regretted my decision and modified the body with a body kit and a Momo steering wheel. It was red and cool.

What is going on, a new year and a new attitude? 😅 In any case, this is a nice little hatch that would be sweet on US roads, but my fellow folks here have a serious aversion to 'station wagons' so I guess I'll have to wait till I travel outside the country to experience it. Hi guys! I want to make a point, hoping it makes sense to you, and must of your viewers.
    Why, if there is in the case o MB an A35 sedan and with VW a 4 doors version of the golf, these two companies, for the sake of the true spirit of a "hot hatches", didn't came out with a 2 DOORS A35 HATCH and 2 DOORS GOLF R (three dors to be correct)?
    For true enthusiasts this is a big deal, because having 4 doors gives them more of a people hauler purpose, instead of the " individualist personality", favoring practicality over form even in the Civic type R.
    I think that the only car manufacturer who can get away with it is Mazda, with the 3 turbo, even though is not a Mazdaspeed.
    What do you think?
    Excellent review as always.
