- Our correspondent Jelle travels in a traditional truck from Mumbai, former Bombay, to Delhi. A beautiful journey for everyone who loves trucks, and road-trips.
Jelle dives into the truck drivers world, and drives along with the truck drivers: a father and his son Singh. Indian lorries are driving artworks, and keep India running. During this four-day drive they pass a wedding, false toll gates and the driver's birthplace in the middle of the Rajasthan desert.
Part of a documentary series, called 'From Bihar to Bangalore'.
Episode 8: 'Truck drivers in India', July 2015.
Original title: 'De weg naar huis'.
Presented by: Jelle Brandt Corstius.
Jelle Brandt Corstius travels through India. Jelle previously tried to understand Russia, and now, he is now trying to capture the essence of India. This country is poorer than the poorest 26 African countries altogether: 426 million poor people are in India. The contrast between the different layers of society is striking: there is is also huge wealth in this country.
Brandt Corstius travels from Bihar, located in the poor east, to Bangalore, the technological giant in the rich southwest. A road trip full of adventures, thanks to Jelle’s peculiar humor and his keen eye on the world.

I must admit I did expect to see a much harder life portrayed in the documentary, however this was relatively laid back and yet realistic. Enjoyed watching!

Nice people, all.
Their innocence is recognisable.
Love from Bangladesh.
Factors responsible for downfall of indian trucking industry:-
1) Demonetisation ( most of small scale industry take the hit)
2) High diesel prices (doesn't complement with opportunities). Higher than USA.
3) RTO are under state jurisdiction which are home for corruption. Entries (bribery Rs1000-3000) for entering each state. Increase burden.
4) Highway robberies, diesel and battery theft and crimes against truck drivers.
5) New generation trucks need adblue which increased operation cost.
6) Increasing highway toll prices which jeopardise margins. Demoralised drivers.
7) No proper truck training institutes. Corrupt system 1st gives license then system blames drivers driving skills and their education.
8)Introduction of baseless and illogical traffic rules in india. Fines are super expensive. 10 times higher of salary they are getting. This is stupidty.
9) Lockdown (system do not consider truck drivers as corona warriors) Does they do not have families?
10) Truck driving is considered Taboo not a profession. They even do not have rights as common citizen have as they gets exploited in every way which they can.
11) Closure of attari border (atleast 400 trucks gets employment from here) Another policy failure.
12) Poor condition of highways. ie J&K, Maharastra, AP, North East complete.
13) States are allowing trucks more than 15 years old to ply within the state illegally. Which is also a great example of corruption.

How is he able to speak Hindi? That's amazing. Lol. It's not like Hindi is hard to learn but his accent is of a person who has learn few phrases and repeated it, yet he is asking quite an advanced questions for conversation.

Excellent video! India is such a fascinating place. I have been curious about truckers there. BTW, those Tata have a very familiar sound, the classic Mercedes 6 inline diesel.
