  • This is a little off brand for me, but even I need to spin up a VM in my home lab everyone once and a while. In this video, we install Windows Server 2022 and Hyper-V on a physical computer. We start by preparing a bootable USB with the Windows Server installation media, then we install Windows Server. Next, we prepare the OS with Updates, change the computer name, create a striped disk and enable Remote Desktop. Then we install Hyper-V on the physical server.
    00:00 - Start
    02:54 - Prepare USB Drive
    04:33 - Install Windows
    08:09 - Change Computer Name
    08:50 - Update the OS
09:19 - Configure Striped Data Disk
    12:02 - Change Time Zone
    12:56 - Enable Remote Desktop
    13:45 - Install Hyper-V

Does 2022 have a free tier of Hyper-V? Without GUI?

It looks like it will install on Server Core. It has to be installed by the command line, more details here learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/virtualization/hyper-v/get-started/install-the-hyper-v-role-on-windows-server

The root part of question was 'is there a 'free HyperV 2022', I think...@@Ciraltos

Pretty sure that you can install hyper v on bare metal. Not what he has done here even though the title says it is. This is Hyper V as a type 2 since it's installed over the OS of Windows Server. You can get hyper v in iso and install on bare metal. I don't believe their is a license needed for this at least in older versions you didn't need it. Now if you wanted to spin up a Windows VM you would need a license for that if you are looking to use in production. For lab use you can get evals.

for the bootable pendrive i would rather use Diskpart.

It still baffles me how this is considered a type 1 HV...

Why would you consider it anything else? The fact that you use the os to install hyper-v has no bearing that it not a type 1 HV. once installed then you have to re boot and the HV now loads and boots before the os which is now running on top of the HV.
Why would it matter how you install that HV matter? What only matters is once installed then the os is running on top of that HV, and that makes hyper-v a type 1 or so called bare metal HV, unlike say VirtualBox which is a type 2 and runs on top of the os. Once hyper-v is installed, then it runs and loads before the os does, including the host os.

This ain’t bare metal my guy
I suggest proper research is done

Why not? The fact of using os to install hv has no bearing on if it's a type 1 or not. Once installed and you reboot then hv loads first and then windows loads on top. Given that hv loads first then yes this means hyper-v is a bare metal hv.

@@Albertkallal I thought the same until I realized the Root Partition runs the hypervisor underneath the Server OS. It totally looks identical to running type 2. It was obvious in Hyper-V 2019. I guess we’ll just have to take Microsoft’s word for it.
