Its interesting that you guys are going to places in Dhaka I have never been to. Its a country of 170 million and there so many different versions of Dhaka coexisting in the same city. I think most people who live in the newer parts of the city tend to stay confined in the newer parts of the city and its malls, restaurants and offices. Hope you can make time to travel to one of the tea garden resorts in Sylhet Division. Palace and Dusai are great and you make trips to the nearby tea gardens.

The place where you did your money exchange thingy was really not for international currency exchange.
This place is for exchanging BDT which are mutilated, defective or dirty. This is actually regulated by Bangladesh Bank. But, as BD Bank is very close to Gulistan (in Motijheel), these men made a business out of it to lessen some of the fuss for people who are interested to exchange their notes. Even though open money markets are illegal, these markets are still on the go. The sale of these shiny new notes usually increase remarkably around two Eid and puja. There's this tradition of giving 'Salami' or 'Pranami' to the younger ones in our country. And like you guys were tempted by those shiny notes, kids in our country also get very happy when they receive these. So, obviously you cannot expect professional and real "pound to BDT exchange rate" there, as they are not always up to date with the rate uk? And as you could tell by your surroundings that, they were poor illiterate businessmen trynna make a living out of it. So, yeah it wasn't fake money or anything(Bd is not that much corrupted yet that these many men can openly trade fake money sitting by pedestrian walkways. There is Police).
Get a tour guide or you won't be able to portray our country in the right way. (which must be the main goal of a travel vlogger I reckon. Unless it is just to gain some views through clickbait and saying literally the same lines like other vloggers in the title- "AVOID THESE MEN". It has literally become a cliché for you travel vloggers now)

The price was ok you could get a little less but honestly I wanted tell you that these people never get to see foreigners much that is why they get excited and ask for stupid prices and the guy carry money bag was not good he used a slang on you as fun but he must get punished by the law talking to a foreigner like that ... when you already know the exchange rate he tried to scam you big time. Better you always get some local by your side. and Gulistan used to be a lot pick pocketers, thieves etc still now though at night, always be careful mate in Bangladesh

Most of the people are friendly here. But few people think they're smarter than foreign tourists. Normally you don't understand Bengali. They take it as an advantage. So you can find a few scammer on the way. You should be aware of them.

May I recommend that if you have time, please do visit the Sundarbans? People will tell you it's the world's largest mangrove forest, but why does that even matter? People will tell you it's home to the majestic Royal Bengal Tiger, which are notorious man-eaters, but that only means you should be thankful if you don't run into one in the wild. So, why should you visit the Sundarbans? For two reasons. Number 1: you get away from the hustle and bustle of Dhaka into remote wilder lands, and if you go on a cruise ship, the food and accommodation on board the ship would be fantastic. Number 2: an island called Dubla. It's an island where 50,000 men (only men, no women) prop up temporary shanties for 5 months (October to March) and catch fish from the Bay of Bengal in their boats. Everything on the island is built just for these five months of the year, from the fishermen's homes to the bustling NEW MARKET to fishermen's fish drying racks. It's an amazing human story. So, if you have time, visit the Sundarbans. You can take the rocket steamer (the hundred year old steamer, if it's still operational) to Barisal or Khulna, and then take one of the guided cruises into the sundarbans (usually 2-3 nights in duration). Hope you will enjoy the rest of your stay in Bangladesh.
