I was in Ashdod at a friend's place on vacation October 7th. Waking up at 6:30am to that siren was just surreal, first time I experienced getting bombed.

The Iron dome doesn't deflect the rockets, it uses missiles to intercept them mid flight using radar to map the trajectory

in effect it's actually not very good because it hits the back or the middle the warhead still flies at the ground on fire
there are multiple parts to the system, the first is interference with the guidance system, then the interception system
It's so crazy how something so little like a mortar round or a tiny rocket projectile can lock on to another projectile in a massive blue sky like that's so incredible precision right there and I still fail to realize how they do it

That is a new air defense system. It is called different, not iron dome. It is iron beam, search it. How it works: it points a laser on a rocket and redirects it in random direction. So instead of hitting in center (point A) it goes to (point B) somewhere around not far from point A. Cost of Iron dome is 50kUSD, this one is 2K$ per every rocket. Iron dome shoots down launched rockets using own rocket. Thats why it is so expensive.
Edit: they combine 2 systems. First Iron beam redirects, then get caught by iron dome. It gives more timeframe to catch them in sky.

Yeah, imagine if Israel didn't have that technology. Hamas would consistently bomb Isreal (as they have, and the Iron Dome has effectively stopped 90% of Palestinian rockets). And the result would be Isreal having to defend itself in the face of destruction. And Hamas would claim all the casualties as civilians, as they have told everyone to do so

All carnage aside, it's pretty amazing from an engineering perspective. I dislike that such cool inventions exist for such evil things. That's the world we live in, always has been. Although I'm not claiming to have a gloomy perspective of the world. There's still a lot of light in it :)

The missiles he sees streaking ARE the iron dome. They're hitting rockets that are on a ballistic arc after they've already expended their fuel, so they don't have visible exhaust.

In the Marine Corps I worked on the anti aircraft missile system that was made by the same company that helped make the Iron Dome for israel, and I understand what is going on in the video. The Rockets no longer have any burning propellant once they are launched and they are just falling toward Israel at the time the missiles take them out.
@@bibsbeezASMR the Rockets don't have any exhaust at the point where they are taken out by the iron dome. They only have exhaust when they're being launched, and then they are falling with no propellant in the back section of the rocket before they hit their target.

I have been studying military history and weaponry most of my life, and I have to admit this is the most amazing piece of weaponry I've ever witnessed. The precision that system has couldn't be any more on point in those interceptions.
This defense System is worthless against Russian Hyper rockets. If something goes fast than just build something that is faster and cant catch you. Simple but effective

There are three parts to the system.
1) The radar system detects incoming rockets.
2) Control system that’s operated by a human and estimates where the rocket is projected to land and decides whether it’s worth to spend $100k per interceptor depending if the rocket lands on a heavily populated area or a missed target.
3) The launcher missile system fires and will destroy the incoming rocket.
My father lives in odessa Ukraine, he said those missile sirens stay on for a long time 😂😭. Either way people dying all over the place is super sad, but definitely cool how it turned off instantly, I didn’t even notice that till I read your comment, thank you!

The iron dome does not, in fact, just turn rockets around in case anyone is confused. Radar tracks incoming threats, computer calculates trajectory and Tamir interceptor are launched to neutralize
And they can adjust their course to complete that interception.
In some cases it looks like the defense missile went to far, and had to turn back to hit the target. Which tells me they move faster than enemy rockets. Which would be important for intercepting incoming rockets.z
Well I think it’s more easy to launch them in a general direction. And as soon as it’s close enough it calculates the last few sec before impact. That way it should be more accurate than trying to hit it from ground directly.

Those sharp angled turns are more reminiscent of American AA technology. Though I don't think any US missile tracking technology is actually involved in Israel's domestic anti-air systems.
