LIQUID TENSION EXPERIMENT, the legendary supergroup comprised of Mike Portnoy (Transatlantic, Sons of Apollo), John Petrucci (Dream Theater), Jordan Rudess (Dream Theater), and Tony Levin (King Crimson, Peter Gabriel) recently announced their return with a new album titled ‘LTE3’, due to be released April 16th, 2021 via InsideOutMusic, twenty-two years after the bands’ last studio album.
"’The Passage of Time’ was the very first song we composed together when we reunited this past summer. It was so exciting to be back in a room creating together again after so long (22 years for all 4 of us and over 10 years for the 3 of us since being together in DT).
This serves as a great first taste for the listeners as it combines so many of the musical elements that makes LTE unique"
-Mike Portnoy
“This was the first song we worked on and when it was done, we all knew once again how amazing it was to be working together. We knew we were on to something and that this was going to be a really amazing album. Nothing about the passage of over two decades could’ve done anything to change that. To me this song truly reflects the collaborative songwriting efforts of all four of us.”
-John Petrucci
There is an undeniable chemistry that happens when the four of us are together. Entering the studio and starting work on ‘The Passage of Time’ after 22 years literally gave me a whole new perspective on these important musical (and personal) relationships and the way time is so relative. We just jumped right in, it was like no time had passed at all, and we created a song that has so many of the elements that make LTE unique. Not a day has gone by since our last release when I wasn’t asked, “When is LTE getting back together again?” Now we can finally deliver, and I can’t wait for everybody to hear our creation.”
-Jordan Rudess
“From the murky depths of the lockdown, LTE has re-emerged, galvanized, dripping with ideas, and taking no prisoners. ‘The Passage of Time’ is just the beginning.”
-Tony Levin
Available in these following formats:
•Limited deluxe hot pink 3LP+2CD+Blu-ray Box Set (incl. a poster and 4 artcards, Blu-ray incl. a 5.1 surround mix with visuals, and full band interview from the studio)
•Limited 2CD+Blu-ray Artbook
•Limited 2CD Digipak

Levin is 74. Imagine arriving for your family lunch and your grandpa shows you his new record...
Happens every week to Lee Sklar’s family 🎅🏻
Oh my god...this destroyed me.
Lol
Yeesss!!! 😂🤣
Awesome, I wan't to be like him!
John’s arpeggios are so clean they kill 99.9% of bacteria
110% at least
🤣🤣🤣
You could eat off his guitar.
He could kill Covid with those arpeggios
You can either sanitize your bath, or you might play this song on a bluetooth speaker instead!
Folks, Tony Levin is still playing at this level at 74 years old. Yes, one of the current best bassists on the planet is 74. Nuts!
Finally a comment on this, THANKS!!!! Tony Levin is a god. Period. Yep, everyone is the best at his role, but dude, Tony Levin!!!!! and the Chapman stick never gets old!!
yeah that is awesome, but for drums cant do that .....
It's as much his skill as the passion he obviously still has for playing. Icon.
Fripp ain’t dumb
Let me if you will explain. Old doesn’t mean what it used to. I’m a industrial edm synthesist, metal guitarist . I had heart surgery. I’m saying this to make a point. I’m 70 and in three bands ! One online , two live. When and if you are lucky to get our age., keep doing it. Keep. The GAS going👍🏿🕺🏾
Petrucci and Portnoy are still friends.
this makes me happy
Rudess too, JP and Rudess are the only from Dream theater that have contact with portnoy
@@caioalves1449 That’s actually not true.
Portnoy said that he spend new years eve 2019/20 with John Myung and his family.
They never really stopped being friends. Their families do cookouts together, etc. I'm sure that things were a little tense for a bit right after the initial split between MP and DT, but both he and JP have said that they never stopped being friends even when they were no longer part of the same band.
The only ones who don't get along are Portnoy and LaBrie.
@@Gonboo THIS is why he quits DT 10 years ago
Us: Tony's in his 70s and you're making him play such technical stuff!
Tony : I composed it

Just happy to see Mike, John and Jordan playing together again in one band.
Me too . A lot of new good stuff out. You should check out Jason Rullo’s new band 3 Rules. 3rulesband.com. Jason drummer from symphony x with a totally new band. All instrumental .. excellent.
@@jgdrum3416 Thank you!

This drummer is so good, i think he should join Dream Theater

James LaBrie‘s vocal-sound is perfect on this one.
Lol ! Funny ... you should also check out 3 Rules .. Jason Rullo , drummer from Symphony X new band .. 3rulesband.com. Your music teacher will approve ... power trio all instrumental.
nooo
jajajajaja yesss
Savage. But I agree. I have always thought LaBries vocals were the weak point in DT even going back to I&W. I just honestly don’t think he’s that great a vocalist period. Took effort and forcing myself to listen to Awake and I&W to overcome my initial disdain for his voice.
Hahahahahah
I can safely say The Liquid Tension Experiment is the most successful experiment ever.
After Sean Malone's "Gordian Knot", which Myung was part of
Try King Gizzard
What exactly was the Liquid Tension Hypothesis?
@@EricSartor haha you got a bit literal.
_"Both Mike and John confirmed on the 5 Years in a Livetime DVD commentary, that Rudess was asked to join Dream Theater largely because of the success of Liquid Tension Experiment, and the chemistry of the three working together."_
There's your answer from the Wikipedia page.
This made me think of another liquid experiment. Not sure about tension but WD40 would be the runner up to this experiment.
The magic and chemistry are still there. Portnoy and Petrucci were born to write music together.
Levin wrote a lot of this too ....your talking one of the greatest composers of all time !!! ...in his mid 70z !!!.....wow!..
They should form a another band with this keyboard player.
Mmmmm.., on the spot there man👍🏼😍
Jordan rudess... 🧙♂️🙆♂️💁♂️🤷♂️🧙♂️
Pretty sure LaBrie is the reason Portnoy isn't in Dream Theater. It's sad. The music is so much more alive when he's a part of it.
The Neil Peart Shirt Mr. Portnoy touches my heart and touches ALL of our hearts............

No kidding. More than year after he passed and I have finally gotten to the point where I can listen to Rush without breaking down in tears immediately.

He really is - such a versatile player. If I can play half as well as he can at his age I'll be very happy!
Seen him with Peter Gabriel. Great band, great show. Also check out Leland Sklar (Phil Collins, Toto, Billy Cobham, David Bowie, zillions of other bands) who is another monster bass player about the same age.

This young group of musicians seem very hip. I hope they make it big!
It's shame the drummer did not audition for DT MP left, I think he could have nailed the part.
Young musicians? 🤣

This is everything i miss about dream theater
Petrucci without Portnoy is just a bad cover band with a decaying singer.
It just goes back to a time when Dream Theater were good, even before Mike left. Except with old Tony on the bass - he's bloody incredible.
I think this is even better than LTE from back in the day as well.
what?

Tony Levin is 74 years old & he’s playing this? Wow.
Puts us 40 somethings to shame
Wizards get even more dangerous as they age. Same for Ruddess.
Well he did have 33 years more to practice right.... :P
Pretty sure it puts most gents with a LIFETIME to shame. At least that’s how I feel about Portnoy. I’m 31, been playing drums 28 of those years, playing along with DT 21 of those 28 years, and still am like what the heck is he doing lol
we don't know if John Myung could reach the number..74 amazing..
Tony Levin is an absolute inspiration for sure. Doing this, and also playing with projects from Peter Gabriel to King Crimson... one of the most important bassists alive I'd wager. I love his playing, and it is so good to hear him back with Portnoy, Petrucci, and Rudess!
This is exactly the sound that dream theater has been missing. I don't hear LTE in this. I hear Dream Theater. How I have missed you, old friend.
Same here sir
This sound will return to DT now :)
Like the last album of Petrucci,
And Mike is now officially back in Dream Theater! I wonder if this was the spark that kicked things off.
he said in his drumeo interview that this reunion for LTE is the musical part of how they got back together
@@djevon4853 yeah, that was a good one!
Feels similar to how Jordan joined the band doesn't it?
Everyone's gangsta until Tony brings the stick.
Then they are ultimate level gangsta.
Wish it was mixed a little louder, seems like the Stingray was perfect for the song and the Stick wasn't cutting so much
Man, Portnoy is an absolute monster.
I missed these 4 together.
Me too. This is unbelievable
Great, but the Top of the World album is so amazing.
Portnoy is really perfect for Petrucci and Rudess.
Lol no disrespect to Mangini, but he was never a natural fit. Portnoy is the man.
@@flapjackson6077 Why are you comparing them? This isn't Dream Theater. It's LTC. Different music. Coming from a different place. No lyrics for a start. Nothing to do with MM. Bands change personnel. Get over it. The Eagles, ACDC, Rolling Stones, Yes, Genesis, Fleetwood Mac, Camel, Evanescence. The Who changed their drummer when Keith Moon died. NOBODY said it wasn't the Who any more. Need I go on?
@@Vincegpz500
Whoa, Vinny! May I call you you Vinny? Lol
But seriously, I’m actually not even a fan of Dream Theater, either with Portnoy or Mangini. I discovered LTE by youtube algorithm and it went from there. The algorithm was very accurate, because since I first heard Acid Rain some 5-6 years ago, I’ve been hooked. Not only that, I’ve since gotten an appreciation for DT.
I knew who John Petrucci is from his G3 days. I knew of Tony from King Crimson. I’d heard of Mike Portnoy, but not Jordan. But being a drummer when I was a younger, Mike Portnoy struck me as phenomenal, many similarities to Neil.
I later checked out DT, with both Mikes.
Mike Mangini is a killer drummer. I’ll concede that he gets a bad rap. Maybe I’m wrong, but I feel like DT should’ve followed Portnoy’s lead, and gotten away from vocals. Instrumentals are their niche. John Myung would be fine on bass, and Mangini would be fine on drums, but LTE is who they are.
I understand your annoyance. But we’re on the same side ultimately. We just have a difference of opinion.
And I get it with personnel changes. When Kenny first joined The Who, I declared they should be called:
“The What The Fuck Was That!”
Lmao! Nah, jis kiddin! Point taken. 🤙
This sounds more Dream Theater than Dream Theater...Love it
Just what I felt.
Came here to say this. This is Dream Theater at its core wtf
You can say that again, buddy
Nothing against Mangini, but his drums never sounded right to me. In their first album the whole mix was terrible, not just the drums, but in their newer stuff it sounds like he has always sounded, from when he was touring with steve vai through james labrie’s first solo album. He has reverted to his preferred sound, snd i much prefer the way Portnoy tunes his kit.
@@HNedel Yes, his pre production decisions combined with post production decisions made for a horrible overly compressed sound. His drums are tuned so low that they all sound the same. Even the octobans don't sound right. It's a mess and it's a shame because he's an amazing player and an even better guy to hang out with. The last album (D.O.T.) showed some hope but they're still not right which tells me they're making them sound that way on purpose.
man, I missed this sound so much...
Same! This style of writing has such a particular atmosphere and sound to it, I love it.

Yap, same thoughts here.
My Brain and spirit just went on a glorious ride like it did back int the 70's when i was listening to Yes, ELP, and King Crimsom.
Yes! That’s exactly what I thought.
A friend of mine, old LTE fan told me: "they sound as if they have asked the engineers 20 years ago not to touch a dial on the console, since they'd be back next day to record the 3rd"
I fell exactly the same!!!
totally agree!
very interesting!
The recording, mix and master is way better now, but the feeling and composition is the same. They made an awesome job.
@Marcelo Soto-Quitoga
Nah i disagree i think they sort of kind of have the Sound of 2004 Train of Thought Dream Theater but also a bit LTE 2.
Off we begin 2021 with the quintessential Portnoy hi-hat and splash fills
I love that fucking fills, I don't how that fills always complete the song or the parts beautifully.
The fucking hi hat / splash fills is what I miss the most in modern DT. MP is a genius.
That's the thing about him, no development or evolution. Same fills.
@@taunokekkonen5733 That's his signature fills though
If you mean for evolution billion bits Xsecnd like a jackhammer I know this is not the sound you like 👍🏼.
This sounds more like Dream Theater than Dream Theater :'D
AHAHAHAAH! Exactly!
Just seeing that purple logo on Mike's drums brings back the kid in me. ☺
And just like that, I'm 16 again. I swear to god JP just writes differently when he's with MP. Watch the Internet break apart at the tons of cover videos coming up over the next few weeks
I'm 17 now, my elder brother hadn't even been conceived by the release of the last LTE album.
Yes, Portnoy seems to make everyone better in all his projects. Generally speaking he beefs up the more subdued (Neal Morse) and settles down the more flamboyant (Pertrucci)
Also, is humble enough to learn from a seasoned and experienced veteran like Tony Levin!
You are damn right about that. This is better than SOA and the last 3 DT albums.
I always considered MP the Heart of DT, but now I think he was the Soul.
Get rid of JLB and bring MP back to DT and the force will once again have balance. No offense to Mike Mangini. Super nice guy and great drummer. This LTE3 just made me happy and sad at the same time.
Much more melody-focused I think. It's really nice, this in particular reminded me of BC:SL at 6:16, or even Six Degrees.

If this is where they're starting off LTE3, then they're going to have to put a warning label on that album.
"Caution: This album will kick your ass and you're going to enjoy every second of it."
Seriously, they should put that sticker on the album! Hell, I would buy a rap album if it had that sticker on it and I don't care for rap music.
that caution sounds like something that would appear on a death grips record xP
They had a similar warning on LTE1 written on the backside of the album - only in a slightly different wording 😉
LTE album is gonna be like the biker from Peewee's Big Adventure:
"First we scalp Them! Then we tattoo them! Then we hang them! Then we kill them!"
@@ericgelders Yep! For the jam/song Three Minute Warning! It reads, “Caution: Three Minute Warning is not for the musically faint-hearted, impatient, or critics of extreme self-indulgence. If you fall into any of the above categories, please hit the stop button on your CD player after track 8.” :)
2:50 - "These Walls" - i love it
More than 20 Years of waiting, and they sound better than ever 👏

Sounds like old Dream Theater to me. I'm crying.
It's so funny that you say that. Listen to really old DT, WDaDU, IaW, Awake, ACoS, FII, all of which were pre-LTE... then listen to SFaM, and everything after that which was all post-LTE. There's a clear difference and, yes, Jordan joining the band was a huge factor. But there was also the fact that the band just stopped caring about pleasing the studios and just did whatever the hell they wanted. DT was reborn after LTE... and became more popular as a result.

I had just stepped my first foot into college when I listened to LTE 1. Now after 22 years with couple of diplomas, a career, a marriage, children and after having completely losing touch with my younger more adventurous self, you guys have brought back the dormant metalhead genes that were hiding somewhere deep. Thanks for letting me become the 18 year old fool who had no plans other than becoming a metal musician. Thanks for doing it for me. Love you guys.

John Petrucci's tone = perfection
He’s pretty much always had a really great heavy tone. 👍
That happens when you don't filter the album like they do with Mangini's drums
Ernie Ball & Mesa Boogie: best combo for tone
As guitarists say, guitar tone is mostly in the fingers
Saw him live on a G3 tour with Uli John Roth and Satriani a few years back. Roth had a terrible tone, or the sound engineer was deaf, or both. Petrucci then crushed it, sounded so much better. I thought no way Satriani could top that... bit he did! That was the meatiest live guitar sound i ever heard. I have difficulty listening to a whole satch album from start to finish, but his performance was nothing short of amazing. Hope to see them both on another G3 tour someday. And of course LTE, the new stuff sounds great 👍

Insanely good. Equally insane to see Tony Levin shred like that at 74 years old. What a beast.
LOVE THESE GUYS!!!!! YAY!.
Petrucci steals my heart with those soaring solos everytime!
For 7 minutes I was 20 years old again, feels like been lost an arm and it grows again.

I've heard them for the first time on 16.03.2000 , and my world turned upside down! I remember that feeling, as if it was Just yesterday

Mike Portnoy wearing a Neil Peart Jersey... best man.
Loyalty!!!
Thank God!!!!! So good to have you guys back together making magic
Impresionante como en los viejos tiempos, como se nota que con Mike se sienten más armónico !
Portnoy's chops are still killer like those of his younger self 🔥
Also loved his Neil Peart jersey
Agreed!!!!🙌😍😍😍😍🔥🔥🔥
Mike stays busy with LTE, Neal Morse Band, Sons of Apollo, and Transatlantic, (and hopefully new Flying Colors and Winery Dogs). Keeps his chops in very good shape.
I agree on the Neil Peart tribute
Mike and John just belong together. So, so grateful they're making it happen...
Heisenberg kickin ass on bass !!
Just noticed Neil Peart written on the front of Portnoy's jersey!! Beautiful Mike! 👍👍 RIP Neil. Peart and Portnoy the two best prog rock/ prog metal drummers ever!
