This is Mike Mangini's legacy right here. Thank you for all the years of incredible drumming with the band.
A Man with integrity and an incredulous respectful effort to the Bands homage.Welcome back MP, And keep us posted Mr. Mangini
Every Mike Mangini's songs sound the same
@@timblasser3984 No, they don't. Put some respect on the man's name (I am a Portnoy simp btw)!
Grew to love the guy. He came with the bidnezz! They didn't skip a beat with him.
@@MrDick-kz8qcboth men are amazing drummers. I've always been into Mangini since the extreme days. Of course when Dream and Day Unite came out it was around the same time frame so I've always liked Portnoy too. My favorite DT albums are with Mangini though. Lost Not Forgotten should have won an award too lol.
2022 Grammy Winner for Best Metal Performance, Dream Theater with The Alien.
Congrats fellows. Well deserved.
I about screamed out FINALLY!! And well deserved!
It is about time. Been with them since Metropolis, it’s about damn time.
Been listening to these guys since "Awake" and honestly never thought I'd see the day. Very well deserved!
What does 'Best Metal Performance' actually mean for Grammys?
And when they die the academy won't acknowledge it at all just like Joey Jordison and Vinnie Paul
Thank you for everything you've done for this band Mike Mangini ❤
100%......Mangini has been an incredible long term replacement for Portnoy. As well as Mangini playing "the Portnoy parts".....I just wonder if Portnoy will be able to do the same
👑👑👑👑👑🐐
12 years as a "temporary" drummer is not too bad. Sounds like they are all on good terms about the departure although I'm sure it still stings a bit for Mike.
@@GLENLYNAS I've been wondering the same. But it will definitely be interesting to see whether this will be played "as is" or reinterpreted...
@@Benjbroc I wouldn't mind betting " the reinterpreted " option will be chosen. Some of Mangini's parts were a lot more complicated than people give credit for
Mike Mangini - I will miss you - especially after this incredible performance.
Thank you Mike Mangini for playing for Dream Theater, you blessed us greatly with your outstanding talent!
This is one of Mangini’s best drum compositions. The complexity and resultant precision of play are top tier.
i agree
It's insane. Dude is incredible. Made the band better.
@@bartondean4260 In some ways, yes. I feel Portnoy had more creative energy and influence, but Mangini is a better technical player.
@@elcidcampeador9629
Portnoy's pocket is stellar... his dynamics and complementary drumming are better. Not that Mangini doesn't have those things at an insanely high level, but not there with MP. MM is a faster and more technical drummer... his poly-rythms are, to me anyway less feel and more metronome (very precise)... but, what do I know. I am not on their level.
They are different... they are two of the best, ever. DT is the winner either way, IMO... peace
to me, this actually feels and sounds a lot more (historical) Portnoy than what (current) Portnoy sounds like now.
Great job winning a grammy guys! The Alien is a great representation of Dream Theater's music. It is about time the world recognized who the GOAT prog metal band is!

@The Night I personally think Amazonia should've won. That song is a masterpiece.
@The Night It's like DiCaprio getting an Oscar for the revenant. It was awarded as an acknowledgment of their life's work, unofficially
Fuck yeah
@Nicholas Popescu I agree 💯! Sadly they didn't win but hey, anyway they were nominated :) for me the whole fortitude album was a masterpiece and deserves a Grammy or at least nomination haha
Guys. In the early 90s when Images and Words came out i was just leaving middle school and I saw a Dream Theater show in my town at a small theater......my very first concert. All these years later , during this weird dark time....DT winning a Grammy is such a positive thing....it's like echo from the past connecting me to my roots and saying ...."there is still hope".
Dream Theater Awake Tour with I Mother Earth in Toronto was one of my first and favourite shows I've seen. Awesome for them to now be recognized.

I saw them too they put on a dope show. Like 10 people in my high school's theater. It was 1977. John was so quiet. Lol pic or it didn't happen my dood :)
Not hope...DT was strong even in the 90s, and this means they are still an epic band today, age not meaning anything to them...theyre capable of being Immortal.
Myung is such an unsung hero, everything on top of his lines is made better because of his genious choices
the foundation of the building
I love him... the way he makes that bass sing and support the melodies
He is the quiet monster of DT. Was recently listening to The Jelly Jam and how he brings the band alive, similar to what he does with DT.
That's honestly my favourite thing about him - he's not there to be a hero but to elevate and support the hero's around him. So modest. So noble. Despite his virtuosic potential
He's an amazing player but I've always hated the fact that he uses loads and loads of effects. I think that he would blow everyone away with just his bass and an amp
The Bass Note Selection Of John Myung is Absolutely Phenomenal, Undoubtedly Legendary Bassist 💝
JOHN is the most underated Bassist ever.
@Corby Jenkinsburger I can think of plenty of better Bass players than him it's the melodies that he creates on the instrument that make him great

manginis drumming in the solo section is honestly some of my favourite drumming in dts catalogue
Can you imagine being 15 and newly stumbling upon this band's entire discography?

Do I actually hear Myung playing loud and proud? Oh lord, my prayers have been heard!
so funny🤣🤣
Was praying the recording engineer learned where the assigned bass channel was on the mixing board. Prayers answered.
You can thank Jimmy T for that. Myung's bass tone on DoT was wonderful. Sounded like the mid growl if the tone had been moved further up the frequency range.
Finally, they turned up Myung's bass.
finally, they allow myung to play
Even in Japan, Dream Theater names and albums are regularly introduced on the web and in magazines. I've been living my life with the music of Dream Theater for 25 years. I was very happy and very surprised to receive this Grammy Award! Congratulations on winning the prize!
The Japanese know good music especially in the power metal and other "happy/energetic" sounding genres.
I've been listening to their music since 2008, when I was 15. The way for the first time I heard Six Degrees was just mind-boggling. Totally something fresh, different and unique. I have listened to bands like Nightwish, Evergrey, Ayreon and lots of other metal/rock bands, but DT is simply level or two beyond any band or composer I have heard :)
Was so happy to see them live after 8 years in January in Poland - the show was very very good and I don't care that much about LaBrie's current voice capabilities.
But DT is like an old wine - sometimes you have to stop listening to them for a while, because you might feel sick because of it.
"Even in Japan" bruh Japan cares more about metal than America, that's for sure....hell even Stratovarius in their mid 90s prime era were having issues in their own country but Japan ate it up
Given how awesome lots of JP video games soundtracks were from the 80s/90s, no wonder, sounds like they have good musical taste
You are very similar to me. I am a Korean and have been a die hard fan of D.T since 1994
No wonder japan choose Dream Theater because of the musical complexity and Japanese love complexity thing and different from others. Am I right?
Congratulations on the Grammy guys!!! Well deserved!!! 💯🎶❤️🔥

I have never been this addicted to a Dream Theater single. The quality of this song is so high that my anticipation for the rest of the album is higher than any album in the past. I'm so glad I decided to randomly buy the Octavarium album back in 2005 when I was working at Circuit City. I had no idea what the band sounded like. All I knew, being a guitar player, was that John Petrucci was in the band so it had to be good. The day I bought that album was the day my musical life changed forever. Dream Theater - "The Alien" lyrics
[Verse 1]
Look beyond the Earth, heading set for the stars
Interplanetary, some are near, some are far
Terraform a new world, survival for mankind
Options but a few, we are running out of time
Should you climb aboard
A voyage, the first of its kind
Ready to explore
All that you've known left behind
[Chorus 1]
Our Holy Grail
Now redefined!
Our purpose, a thread
Weaving through time!
Now with the means to expand
Life beyond here
Digital man
Alien, changed forever!
New found world in the stars!
[Verse 2]
Understand the meaning
Certain we'll extend the scale of consciousness
Woman, child and man!
Multi planet species out amongst the stars
Not stuck in and around
Who and what we are
Time to climb aboard!
Countdown to takeoff on time
Systems are online! (Five, four, three, two)
Farewell to all humankind (One)
[Chorus 2]
Our Holy Grail
Clearly defined!
Our purpose, a thread
Weaving through time!
Now with the means to expand
Life beyond here
Digital man
Alien, changed forever!
New found world, here we are!
[Instrumental Break]
[Chorus 3]
Our Holy Grail
Clearly defined!
Our purpose, a thread
Weaving through time!
Now with the means to expand
Our Holy Grail
Read between the lines!
One purpose, one thread
Weaving through time!
Now with the means to expand!
[Outro]
I am the alien
Out here in the stars
We'll search 'til we find!
No matter how far
A far better world
For all human race
And beyond!
I am FAR from any kind of songwriter, but listen to the last two lines in the song. I think the word "kind" would fit better than "race" in the context of being sung.

Although each member is at the top of their own game here, but Mangini's drum parts are absolutely phenomenal. They not only complement Petrucci & Rudess' solos greatly, but also adds distinctly to the flavor of the song. Eagerly waiting for the whole album.
I have been a fairly big critic of his but the drumming is working for me on this song. I have to think a big part of my issue with Mangini thus far has been the mix of drums.
Mangini talks a lot about “flavor” since he settled in with these guys and how he wants his parts to gel with the others and it really shows here.
Where is the flavor? All I hear is the same stuff all over again and Petrucci's melodies are copy/paste.
Yea, definitely agree with ya. Finally he is melting his flavor and does not over using it

James is sounding great. I'm loving the attention to the lower, more melody-driven register they chose for the vocal approach. I also feel like the production on this is the best sounding of the Mangini era so far. Really loving this tune the further down the track I get!
Honestly, and thats just my opinion, his voice is getting weaker timbre wise. When he goes to his higher register is sounding less and less crisp and Bright, and starting sound more tinier and it sort of hurts. It feels forced. I really prefer his lower range nowadays. I guess those are effects of his age
I like his voice too!! Hes great singing soft
Having in mind the James' issue with his higher notes, it is a wise decision for him to sing in his lower register. Besides doing it so well, melodies are better heard.
Regarding Mangini's performance, maybe it is still too soon to establish that, though this song was incredible. But I loved what he did in DoT and in DT12

Well, just flawless! It feels like Mangini has finally got his voice in the band (not that the other albums he wasn’t great, but this particular song he shines yet he’s part of the band). Great job guys!!!
I gotta agree. He's always been amazing. But I felt he just wasn't fitting in all the way yet... and then this happened, and it's there. He's completely locked in now.

As a space engineer I can say, this is the best combination of music and space visuals that could exist about the future of humanity!
James doesn't sound like he's straining vocally- I really like the new approach. Petrucci's solos are amazing, and the mix is better than a lot of recent DT albums. I wasn't all that impressed with Distance, but am really looking forward to this release. First day buyer!
Because it's not a live performance
@@biskutnation Even his most recent live performances are surprisingly not that bad. Maybe after 20 years he finally took vocal lessons lol.
The best thing that has happened is James not going crazy with falsettos and higher octave ranges. It's the best the band have sounded since...well Distance over Time hah!
He is learning from the masters
Yeah he sounds stellar on this track. It takes a lot to grow as a band and DT never disappoints!!
I love that LaBrie is staying within his current vocal range instead of trying to live up to the highs of his early career. It might not be the same sound but it’s the best direction for him to take the band vocally, and makes for a much stronger product at the end of the day. Loved his performance here
Of course! That's what I always thought, there's absolutely no problem in Labrie singing deeper... It sounds better with his current voice, and the chances of singing out of tune decrease
Labrie is a great singer, but I do miss the range he had back in the 80s.
I remember a story about how Ian Gillan started losing his range but kept trying to hit those high notes. Similar to an degree with Geoff Tate. The irony being that if they just shifted everything to a lower pitch and put in a good performance, it would be less noticeable than straining their cords around notes that they can't reliably reach anymore.
Isn't it Portnoy who wanted him to sing llike that high, actually? I could be wrong.
@@corentinsoulier5607 I believe up until recently, probably before Distance Over Time, Petrucci wrote LaBrie’s melodies for him. Either LaBrie is now writing for himself, or Petrucci is being more considerate. Portnoy was part of the vocal melody composition while he was in the band too, from what I’ve heard.
What else one can say? The song is amazing, but from 7:48 here on forward it gives goosebumps, holy crap.

Yeah man I can't stop hadbanging during this day. What a comeback from DoT album
I couldn't have said it any better myself 🤘
It is made by dream theater ! Do you know ? What it would be than pure DT is not pure Metallica
I don’t care what anyone says, I’ll always love Dream Theater no matter what. Congratulations on winning a Grammy last night guys!
Ok so this song just got the Grammy's, how awesome is that.. congrats to the band. Awese work. Keep it coming.
This gets better with every listen. And it's a great video to boot.

See you guys today here at Viña del Mar!! How cool is that your favorite bands play on your birthday, on saturday and at your home city, just 4 blocks from my house hell yeahh!!
Saw DREAM THEATER back in the day. I believe they opened up for RUSH here in Chicago. Love this band. RUSH , progressive rock, DREAM THEATER, progressive METAL ! Congrats on the Grammy, Well DESERVED!!!!!!
I'm so happy to discover that Dream Theater is still a thing, and sounds like this.
Plot twist, the astronauts who explored outer space and the planets, in hundreds of years they evolved into aliens. Then at that time, they used a time machine to travel to earth at this time
What a great lyric
Just saw them tonight in Akron, OH. They genuinely sounded better live than the studio version
This sounds very promising, sounds a bit like Systematic Chaos II.
I was instantly getting Systematic Chaos vibes as soon as it started playing too, with a smattering of Scenes From A Memory thrown in as well. They're really reaching back for that classic DT sound here. This is a damn cool track though, so that's not necessarily a bad thing.
I can totally feel that with this song!
The intro riffs have some parts almost identical to "In the Presence of Enemies". Whether this was intentional or not, who knows.
Promising? Systematic chaos is considered one of the worst DT's albums and i agree with it👺
But i liked this song more than whole SC album
I love Systematic Chaos and I agree 😁
congrats. .🤘🤘
Congratulations on the Grammy, this song definitely deserved it
Mangini sounds like classic Dream Theater , much more groove and swing in this song 🔥
While being new and different at the same time.
mike mangini is officially the alien
they finally gave his drum the right sound
Ok you hear it too so it wasn't just me
@@rudolfbecker4313 yes, to be fair they should gave him this sound right from the beginning (ADToE)
first time I hear it: It's a masterpiece
103 time I hear it: It's a masterpiece but now I understand it :)
Welcome aboard!
Congratulazioni per il Grammy, yeah!!!
Way to go Dream Theater!!!! Congrats on the Win!
Wow, Mangini and Petrucci really shines here, best drumming ive heard in a long time
It’s as if Systematic Chaos (in terms of the riffs and arrangements) and ADTOE (in terms of overall sound and feel) had a baby. Loving it!
I got those same vibes as well. Definitely enjoying what I heard and excited for the album
No se cómo llegué aquí pero no me arrepiento de nada
Well deserved win 🏆 for dream theater. Grammy wining ! Congratulations 🎊🎈🍾
Everyone is talking about the drums. But guys, the solos. So fricking good. I can't wait for the whole album
It's all great
@@kamikazekrush3758 YES. All Phenomenal
Its a normal thing, because Mangini evolving to fit in the band, as for the Petrucci solos he is and always create a great solos
People are talking more about drums since this is the first time we hear such a masterpiece from Mangini since his inclusion in DT. I don't know what had stopped him earlier to build his parts in that way but I think Mangini has sorted out the issues. We know John Petrucci, everything he composes turns to a 💎. I can't wait for the complete album too. Cheers 🍻 mate
I love it everything about the entire song, including the Mangini drumming. The only thing I'm not too fond of is his choice of snare and to some extent, entire kit. It's a bit flat. The entire band sound reinvigorated. They showed glimpses on the last album but I think Petrucci's solo album and the recent LT3 has given the band a new kick in the cods!
Easily the best song they have recorded in over a decade. Has a lot in common with DoT but it also has all of the best melodic elements of Black Clouds but mostly the first disc of six degrees. Fkn love it!
I feel like this is continue of music journey started by "Pale Blue Dot"!
Sounds amazing and can't wait for the album!
Absolutely
Agree!
First thing I thought of when hearing the guitar tone at 2:55…
It is, pale blue dot is about what's the future of humanity and this song is the long way of discover new planets to live
I was just thinking about this yesterday
I remember listening to dream theater in the summer of 1992
This is why we will miss Mike Mangini...❤
Damn that intro solo john has some nice phrasing idea and note interval choices
Ikr! Nice to see another indian Fella here tho!
the ending is also good
@Ayustria Salma "if the guitarist know how and he know" what it means?
Meet the newest brazilian prog metal, czcams.com/video/v2iNpXoRkPA/video.html
Wow, Jordan's solo on this track is one of his best! Tone, note choices, and the phrasing are all on point.
The precision of the sounds is indeed out of this world
Best intro I ever heard 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
