- Y'all know I don't like giving slop videos but you know this one was almost done so I had to finish it. Westside Gunn has been for the past 5 years one of my favorite rappers and I wasn't a huge fan of his most recent album, "AND THEN U PRAY FOR ME", I thought it was good, sure but it doesn't quite hold up to his most recent stuff and in this video I examine why that is as well as go into depth and explain how the cons of this album move into his newer snippet material, and why I'm worried for his next album.

Wsg in his prime rn
WSG's stated numerous times in previous interviews that he's only using rap as a gateway to put his fam on, and to expand as an entrepreneur/investor. I think he's reached a point where he doesn't really care as much, and that's ok in his eyes because he and Ben/Con are in a good space regardless how things go in the future. I always respect him for bringing the whole crew with him, and not wanting to be the centerpiece on collabs.

That's awesome for them. The point remains, though. Mediocre music is mediocre music. And he might not care about his legacy as a rapper, but the culture does, and furthermore, it can impact other areas of his life. As long as he's moving well though I'm sure he'll be alright.

Homie wants to pivot; especially outside of music. But in a musical sense, he explained that there were concepts and sounds he wanted to delve into that he didn’t before. He understands what the fans want, but he has wants of his own. You can honestly sense the contradictions on the album between him meeting the fans where they are, yet also doing wtf he wants. I’m not mad at people for disliking the juxtaposition. I personally rock with it from a multifaceted standpoint.

as is his every right. the album is great from a compilation perspective but i don't listen to westside gunn for compilations i listen for what cohesion he's capable of bringing to a whole project this one was very far from landing imo.
it's great that he tried something new and in my review i said that there are times where his weird experimentation pays off, on kostas, chloe and house of glory. i just think it didn't work for most of the album.

Nah bruh, my only complaint about the album was it felt like Westside never really found the pocket on those trap beats.
It hurt me because if he could've just mixed a lil Southern drawl & flow wit his unorthodox Gunn style those records would've hit!!!
And the project would suddenly "flow better". . . SMH

I said this before and I'll say it again. WSG was on a fire streak from 2016 to 2020. He had a string release of fire material back to back to get Griselda off the ground running and it worked; Flygod and Supreme Blientele are masterpiece classics. But after he became established enough he stopped caring and started doing what he wanted cause he could focus on his other ventures. I still love him and he's still well respected though
Bro it was an homage to the early, raw mixtape era. It's supposed to sound like that. He said that he was inspired by that at the time, so he went with it. I understand not liking the sound but calling it bad is crazy cause it was a great execution of what it was going for
but it wasn't a good execution of that, if i wanted to hear that sound i'd listen to jeezy, wayne or literally anyone else. it's not what wsg needs right now. wsg's going through an identity crisis. we don't listen to wsg to hear this sound we listen to westside gunn to hear what he's gonna curate for himself and artists and how he can push the envelope with the griselda sound and formula this is regressive and undoing all of that. regardless, i see what you mean but i can't agree. thanks for the comment!

I think the fact a lot of people hate the album but agree Kitchen Lights is one of his best songs ever just adds to WSG lore. That’s what art is about. To be so polarizing on the same project is cool to me, shows he’s actually taking chances.

benny was flowin very similar on both and it felt very forced on both songs, that's pretty much what i meant but i didn't get that across in the best possible way
I think its evident that Westside Gunn is just done rapping. And Im ok with that. Play the background, push your brothers’ albums (because theyre still dope!)…put out dope fashion…and new artists…stay paid.

I think a lot of WSG / Griselda fans don’t listen to or enjoy modern rap / trap rap so you don’t understand it. He definitely was going crazy on the project.
This is not even a good attempt at a modern trap sound. it sounds like he's trying to make the worst 2000s era crunk rap song possible and it's not good. that era died out for a reason.
@@adankpancakeCrunk's definitely not dead or outdated. Its been on a whole comeback for a few years now. With artists like Tyler, Sexxy Redd, Chief Keef, Duke Duece, and others being the major frontrunners. Some of the biggest rap songs within the past five years have production similiar to DunnHill and JD Wrist.

If you can't understand the sound listen to his old work. The album was great. What people consider off beat just means their ears arent trained for it. He combines elegance with the jungle on purpose. Its art.

Boldy actually had a bad project drop, the Conway record wasn't that good.
Rome Streets had the best release out of everyone with "wasn't built in a day'. I loved that jawn.
at least this year started out great with Conway's best release in a while.

Great video. Wsg fell off once he got too much praise. He literally complained when ever people didnt love his album or fashion choices. He believes his own bullshit so much that it changed what made his music good. Its not grimey anymore! All he does now is name drop lame ass euro brands, sing words long to make them rhyme and brag about tacky jewelry. His last great song was 2-3 albums ago.

she's not horrible the whole time but she's extremely hit or miss and her verse on this album was not it. that's fine and i love Lil B's music but that doesn't excuse it from being a bad song in it's entirety.

What a lot of people didn’t know is that his album was done in Europe….His sounds are more Euro than your typical boom Bap sound. I understand why he did it, and it’s more tapping into the Euro sounds. If you understand some of the music in various European countries, then you would understand this project. It's out there in the world just like any other original product. Artists are not free from criticism by labeling their work as art, when Maurizio Cattelan taped a banana to a wall and it sold in the minimum 6 figures that doesn't mean what he did is genius it means he found a way to make easy money off people who knew no better. at the end of the day it's music and i'm gonna put my opinion out there. You don't have to agree, you can simply not watch. Clearly though you didn't watch because in the video I describe which songs I liked from it and which ones I didn't. All of those projects laid the foundation that he stands on with everybody he puts on is a refreshment to that foundation as it cracks its just hope that they bring something to the house. Till they go off and build their own foundations.
