Absolute savagery up and down the block blended with a truly original creative vision equals something truly wonderous. And I haven’t even heard all of it yet! Crazy!

This is actually all one song that was one side of the album. Progressive Rock is like classical music in having different movements and tempo changes. The first part overture has aspects of classical 1812 overture and this album came out in 1976. The other side of the album had a number of shorter songs.
This opus was a finger to their record company who didn't like their previous album because it was too Progressive and experimental.
The label wanted shorter more radio friendly cookie cutter songs. This was their answer, Rush kept their integrity and created what they wanted to create. 2112
was a huge success with the fans and the record label never bothered them again. Rush assumed control over their creative output.
I think Cygnus Book1 and Cygnus Book 2 (Hemispheres) would be cool to do next.
They are two different songs but they go together to tell the full story. Lyric video for sure.

Everyone at a RUSH concert were friends. All 20-70 thousand of us. Never met a RUSH fan I didn't like. I was a fan before RUSH was cool and proud of it.

Brisk. I’ve always been torn about the graphic novel. I spent 25 years listening to this music, before the graphics came out. I had my own perception of the visual based on the music. I think is was done amazingly well, but I also find my own imaginings something I hold dear. The music is so good.
I can see what your saying. You had your own idea of it for years then bam theirs a comic of it with a whole different imagination behind it. That’s awesome you still dig it though! What a track. What a JOURNEY lol
I totally get this. This was the first Rush album that I bought. I was 12. To this day I can vividly remember going to the mall, buying the album and studying the inside sleeve on the bus ride home. Then, smoking a spliff (yes I was smoking weed at 12) and hiding in my room for hours listening to this masterpiece and imagining what was going on, painting my own image of the story. I would finally get to see them live on September 2, 1979 at Varsity Stadium in Toronto. My first concert ever. It was the Permanent Waves warmup tour. Not only did they perform this whole song, they also introduced us to several songs off of Permanent Waves that came out a few months later. My friends were super envious of me. lol
Rush hit it out of the park with this one. It started a streak of five albums that were each not only brilliant, but different and innovative from each other. This piece has become a rock/prog classic. It flows at a brisk pace and it doesn't seem 20 minutes long. All the components complement each other, it follows classical music conventions, and (most importantly) it is filled with passion from beginning to end.
You can feel the passion and urgency just pulsating through the entire song. It’s almost palpable. I was totally engrossed start to finish. These guys are awesome 👏
Alex's solo during Soliloquy is one of my favorite solos of all time. The tone, the phrasing, all of it. Makes the hair on the back of neck stand up.
His phrasing is reflective of his sense of humour. Totally unique. Very very fast picking hand.
Check out Joe Bonamassa and Beth Hart I'd rather go blind. In Amsterdam I believe. Her voice is better than Janis.. more mature
Just think 2112 was made in 1977 I love Geddys voice on this album, all the different range points ! Yes there are more songs on 2112.

Epic masterpiece. 1, 7 part song, side 1 of the record. Side 2 contained 5 songs. A Passage to Bangkok, The Twilight Zone, Lessons, Tears, and Something For Nothing.
You pronounced Geddy correctly. His given name is Gary Lee Weinreb. The way his Polish grandmother with a thick accent said his name , sounded like Geddy. The name stuck. Btw , if you didn't know, both of Geddy's parents are WW II Auschwitz concentration camp survivors.
That’s crazy about his family… terrible. I’m glad he was able to channel whatever tragedy and pain he felt from that into this amazing band. And this song…. Just wow. I will definitely check out side b for the rest. I want more 🥲🤘

The story of this album is incredible. I will "briskly" note it. The label said no more concept albums after they released Caress of Steel that underperformed. They left and said if we go down, lets go down for us and created 2112 with one side bing this rock opera while the other side was more traditional (if rush can ever be called traditional). The studio was furious but released it and it was a huge success. After this the band was free to do whatever they wanted which is why you see them shift their style to fit what they were into at the time over the years. This is my favorite song by the most talented band in history.

In later concerts they would play parts of 2112, but seeing the whole thing performed, well like i said, still my favorite concert experience. That's some 400+ concerts later.
L33, yeah, 2112-suite is on side one of the album and there are 5 more songs on side two, all great! You may know the story with 2112 by now, how they got a "last chance" by their Record Company to put out a more radio-friendly album (they were told to sound like Bad Company or Bachman Turner Overdrive) or they would lose their contract. The guys from Rush said fuck that and they put out an album, 2112, that is a most potent MIDDLE FINGER to the "Priest"/Record Executives! Rush was ready to lose their career in music if it meant having to compromise their goals/values/muse. And the rest is history; 2112 took off in album sales, earning Gold record status (500,000 units sold) by November 1977, and their popularity blew up (they were still a "Cult" band, but their was a great buzz about the band. Musicians around the world took notice!). It basically earned Rush their freedom from interfering executives, trying to control their music. Keep going on the rest of the album if you want! There's so much more to discover, good brother! By the way, I'm a drummer too. Neil was my first big influence, after Ringo Starr.

This was my first concert ever. It was 1976 and I was 8. My brother intended to take his girlfriend but my parents informed him, that day, that he had to watch me for the night. They went out of town and I went to my first concert. It is my earliest vivid memory. I remember the songs, the smells and the robes that Rush was wearing. I was hooked on Rush ever since.

There's a run of four Rush albums I listen to over and over - this is the start of that run, and I move briskly on to A Farewell to Kings, Hemispheres, and Permanent Waves. This is not to diss their other albums (which I put on now and then), but it is the core of my Rush fandom. I love that this is such a huge f* you to the record execs, and that after this did so well commercially they could really say "we have assumed control"...
Watch some interviews with them. Nicest guys you could meet. Totally humble.
I can tell from there music and performances alone that they are good lads. I will definitely check out some interviews thank you 🙏

I still remember the place, the friend, and the day I first Heard This in 76' Instantly became my favorite Band. Then a couple years later another friend went to California on Vacation and came back with Van Halen 1 before they broke Nationally
I love this song so much! Instrumental bliss, discovery is a well written love song to the guitar, Geddy's vocals are amazing.
After the disappointing sales of Caress of Steel, the record label demanded short, radio friendly songs from Rush. They gave them an ultimatum. Rush responded with a 21 minute masterpiece in 7 parts. They decided if they were gonna go out, they were gonna do it their way by playing music they were proud of. The fans loved it and sales skyrocketed (despite no radio play), and Rush won their creative freedom for the rest of their career.
That is an inspirational story if I have ever heard one… wow. They said guess what? Here’s your radio. 😂
And in retrospect Caress of Steel really is a great album, without Fountains of Lamneth and The Necromancer there is no 2112. 😊

Here's the basic story behind 2112. Their management wanted them to do radio friendly songs. This was a protest. They said we're not doing this for you.
We're doing it for us. So they made the first half of the record all one song (kinda) and gave them the finger and created this MASTERPIECE😎 This is the story of that battle.
Neil Peart wrote all of the lyrics to Rush music. We lost our GOAT. He's playing for GOD now.😇 That was the last time I cried (Sorry Christine. When Stevie goes I'm going to lose it) 😭
I'm jealous because you have the cool earphones like I had with my old turntable in the day. Now all I have is my little computer speaker. This version is cool with graphics telling the story, in 1976s we were hit with both barrels with this, and only our imagination.

Rush was the ultimate band for nerdy people. People who like larping and dungeons and dragons love Rush. Back in the 1980s, it was their musicianship that caught my ear. Their concerts were intense sausage parties unlike Motley Crue, Def Leppard, etc.. where women in fishnet stockings were vying for backstage passes. Back then, I was lucky, my girlfriend and future wife loved Rush. Years later, we divorced and now she's a country fan, go figure.
That was Side A of 2112. (In album terms) Side B is quite good too. All individual songs. Explore. They do the same thing in the album “Hemispheres” It’s a little harder to follow because you need to hear the end of previous album to bridge to it. It’s a space voyage turned Greek mythology called Cygnus X1 (Book 1 and 2)

I grew up with Rush but never gave them much mind. They are astounding. Thanks for your reviews. You might consider giving "Porcupine Tree" a look. "Blackest Eyes" is an excellent song. Oh, and "Brisk." (-:
This just came across my feet but I think I will subscribe in case you do more of this kind of thing. But that was a highly enjoyable reaction. What is hilarious is at first I thought there's no way this kid is going to have the attention span to get through this there's just no way. But you found ways to cope and then suddenly you find yourself lost in that world just like we all did at some point. I'm going to assume you are at drummer based on some of the comments he said but I'm a guitar player multi-instrumental it's almost everything although not everything plus recording and composing and riding and stuff like that.
And so therefore it's so fun when you have somebody reacting that definitely has a handle on at least some of the musical aspect of it and I really love the age difference. It's something about not wanting to really pay attention to it but then if you do, like really paying attention to it a whole lot. And I do believe that heavy emergent things is the way to really understand it.
But yeah man, check out the other side of the album! Unlike the first side which is the Concept side, these are all Stand Alone songs and they are all incredible in their own way. There's a lot of variety there but boy will they show you how to rock. And my favorite I have to say is the one that closed out the whole end of the album with, something for nothing. What a way to close in album. But if you can afford to, work your way through side B because they did put those songs in there in an order.

Rush's 2112 is a Rock Opera on par with the likes of Pink Floyd's The Wall, The Who's Tommy and Styx's Kilroy Was Here among countless others. The Progressive Rock and Fusion movement of the '60s & '70s (and beyond) may have a niche following, but its greatness led the way for Progressive / Symphonic Metal and bands like Tool & Nightwish. This graphic-novel styled video really contributes nicely to realizing the narrative of the lyrics.
Dude it’s so good! I was completely engrossed by the second song. What a beautiful display of musicianship and creativity. The talent was oozing from the screen, you could almost taste it! It seems to me that almost every modern rock or metal band should thank these guys for doing it first and doin it RIGHT!🙏🤘

No, it was arguably an allegory that describes their fight with industry execs to follow their creative vision rather than succumbing to the tremendous pressure that was placed upon them at the time from their label to write more radio friendly tunes. That’s certainly also an overlay of ideas from the sort of fiction Peart was reading at the time - which placed the rights and interests of individuals in stark (and preferable) contrast to the interests of an indifferent state commanded by unsympathetic elites, primarily for their own benefit (which they would convince themselves as being aligned with the best interests of the society over which they governed with an iron fist).

Brisk!! The sad part of the tale is, the protagonist, who found the guitar, actually does give up hope, in Soliloquy, paraphrasing the last lines, My life blood spills over… so he doesn’t get to see the destruction of the old ways… Also the Temples of Syrinx, there is a mention of the Red Star, I wonder if that was an allusion to the Soviet Communist state… ✌️brother…

Think of it like a classical piece with different movements. It’s a single work in multiple parts. They did this a few times. Cygnus X-1 Books 1 and 2 are a great example, and something you should definitely check out
