For those wondering why yoritomo didn’t became shogun until 1192, it was because retired emperor go shirakawa was a powerful political and he refused to give yoritomo the title of shogun.
Hopefully, the tense relationship between go shirakawa and yoritomo and the conflicts between yoritomo and his brothers will be covered in future videos

so on TV last night there was some show which talked about some little hamlet in Tokushima that was apparently founded by fleeing Heike folk, so I commented to my husband, “oh, the Taira, from when they lost to the Minamoto?” and he said “how do you know this, you’ve never studied Japanese history” to which I was like 😎

For anyone thats interested theres a fantastic old Japanese film called 'Kwaidan' which incorporates this battle into one of its ghost stories.
The film is broken into 3 separate stories.
Everything you learn in this video is re-enacted in the film in an epic and also slightly horrifying way, really creeped me out. The film ultimately led me here!

This battle was actually mentioned in the first episode of the original “Cosmos “ series as an example of artificial selection of the crabs by the local fishermen over centuries.

I love Sagan, but I don't think that claim of artificial selection for the crabs has much evidence behind it 🤷♂️

I think Heike-gani are not for human consumption, so the fishermen have no reason to catch them.

The final Battle of Dan-No-Ura. Last stand of the Taira Clan and the tragic demise of the infant Emperor Antoku. One of my favorite story from Japanese History. When i was younger i always saw the Taira as the villains in this story, but as i got older, i see them more akin to that of tragic heroes and came to like them more than the Minamoto. Maybe this is what the japanese meant by the beauty of impermanence.
The battle was featured in the Japanese ghost story Hoichi the earless. Awesome video by the way!!

One thing to put out there: Yoshitsune is always hailed as a genius military commander - but IF (at least part of) his mission was to secure the imperial regalia - and Antoku, who after all, was of imperial blood - didn't he actually screw up big time here?
Gonna give him a pass here though. It's hard to stop someone throwing stuff into the water :P

As a man that at the moment are on my third beer, i totaly saw the samurai faces!
How to exterminate a clan? Use a junsatsushi to bribe a clan's only settlement to join your cause. That's what Total War: Shogun 2 (Rise of the Samurai Expansion) taught me.
But you have to lure the daiymo and his army out with your 1 unit of levy naginata. Then the Junsatsushi can recruit the settlement.
