    I imagine that this was a terribly lonely existence for these Courtesans, even while being surrounded by all of these clients who claimed to love or even just care for the Courtesans.
    Sometimes offering a caricature of affection can be a very cruel thing to do to somebody.
    It makes me wonder what the rate of suicide was among Courtesans in the Edo period.

      @@nonamepasserbya6658 That's nice, but life for most hookers, back then and now, is not the same thing as "Pretty Woman."
      And especially in a culture like Japan's that has traditionally placed so much value on honor and saving face, it wouldn't exactly go over well if word got around that a man abandoned his family/wife and/or rescued some whore from a brothel.

    I find these videos fascinating. I can't help but think of how for seemingly all of human history, men have been obsessed with women and our sexuality, and that obsession leads to systems that encourage objectification, sex trafficking, early deaths, etc. Fascinating and very sad. Grateful to live during a period where women have more choices (in general) and less of us have to consider selling ourselves in such a manner to survive. I hope the day comes where this is never needed for women, and only those that are truly interested in living in such a manner do so.

      As far as biology is concerned, literally nothing matters aside from reproducing. Living, dying, accomplishments, morality, ethics, all irrelevant compared to just making children. After all, the only people who's genes continue are those who have children. That's the kind of personality that evolution creates. When you account for that, and the fact that men and women have two completely different reproductive goals, it becomes pretty clear *why* society has developed as it has. For men, having as many children as possible with as many women as possible with as little investment as possible would result in more children surviving and continuing on. Comparatively, for women, having as many children as possible with a single man who is heavily invested in only her and her children makes much more sense, as women are extremely vulnerable when carrying children, and feeding and raising them requires significant energy and time expenditures.
      All of this being said, I don't think I need to tell you which strategy is more ethical and appropriate, especially in the modern day. But unfortunately, the difference in male and female psychology when it comes to sexuality is just built into our biology. History reflects this very clearly. The good news is that, as we become more advanced as a society and we, hopefully, acknowledge these differences and their motivations, we can work to overcome what our biology tells us to do and start to choose what our minds know is correct and moral.

    • @DragonNya69hehe
      @DragonNya69hehe Před 8 měsíci +8

      @@KeterMalkuthyour comment has good points but there are some big issues with your reasoning, particularly on the men's side. Human males absolutely do benefit from spending resources on their own children. Unless a species has lots of offspring that develop quickly or very competent lone mothers, the strategy you mentioned doesn't work. Usually, only one human is born at a time and it takes YEARS for it to do anything useful. We survived by being social and cooperative bc that's what works for our children. In this situation, the man that spend the least time taking care of other people's offspring and instead focus on his own is the one that succeeds. That's one of the main reasons why so many patriarchal societies treated women as property of their husband: it was a way to almost guarantee the offspring is theirs. It's also why female cheating was often punishable by death while male cheating was considered normal. Males still get tons of variety in their gene pool by cheating, but females don't. So yeah, the idea this model benefits women is bullshit. It's made by men, for men. No wonder some of the most violently misogynistic people nowadays hate divorce so much lol

    • @KeterMalkuth
      @KeterMalkuth Před 8 měsíci +3

      @@DragonNya69hehe That's true, I spoke perhaps too broadly for the sake of making my point regarding the biological drivers clear. Rather than encouraging a complete lack of investment on the part of men, it encourages men to be more liberal with their investment in several women, whereas women have incentive to be more invested in a single partner.
      The primary facet I wanted to illustrate is that the behaviors that biology encourage are, to some degree, directly contrary between men and women. What behaviors benefit women and what behaviors benefit men, from the perspective of solely continuing their genes, while similar, are noticeably different.
      Obviously, being loyal to your partner and treating them right and investing yourself in one person is the correct choice in the modern day. Our mortality rates are significantly reduced so there's very little imbalance between our gender ratios, we all implicitly understand the emotional betrayal associated with cheating, and we all know children deserve to have two dedicated parents. However, biologically, we're not all 100% wired to adhere to that goal. By acknowledging that, we can find solutions and work around what hormones and instincts tell us to do.

    Its amazing how the second I get super into looking at the history behind oiran and tayuu, Linfamy uploads a ton of videos on the subject. I do have one question though:
    I understand that tayuu and oiran are different, tayuu being pre 1750 and oiran being post (at least in yoshiwara). But how were they simular, and how were they different? Based on my research, their appearances differed in a few different ways, and oiran were, while still trained in the arts, much less trained than tayuu. Not to mention all the different types of rank within the oiran umbrella and ranks beneath the tayuu. It gets very confusing very quick.

    When I was a teenager, I was in love with Japan. It was a magical place, I thought. I was enamored with ninja and shinto, and pretty much everything. Naturally, I wanted to learn more about this wonderful place. That was my mistake. The more I learned, the less magical Japan became. It was a country like every other country in the world, complete with problems, unfortunate history, ordinary people, and no magical anime fantasy.
    Oh, to have that ignorant bliss of youth again. Reality bites.
    I still love Japan, for what it is, not what imagine.
    This video-all your videos-remind me of that. I feel for the human beings of Japan's historical pleasure districts. What a hard life! That life would genuinely suck ass. (No pun intended here.)
    Whenever my life starts to suck and things look down, I can always say to myself, "I could've been a tayu." (How I'd pull that off, being a man and not a particularly good-looking one, I don't know.)
    Your video taught me that, Linfamy. Domo arigato gozaimasu!

    Even for the best of the best, the oldest profession has never been an easy one.
    Save for the pimps and madames calling the shots.

    I could swear top courtesans were called oiran, not tayū. Tayū were actually noble imperial performers, but they’re commonly mistaken as courtesans because the high ranking courtesans purposely copied tayū because of their beauty and noble status. The word tayū literally means great one, after all, and that alone should say something about just how respected they were

      Tayū were actually courtesans of the highest rank. The term oiran came into use after the tayū disappeared (women stopped attaining that rank). Oiran means high ranking courtesans in general.
      Modern tayū are not courtesans, they're basically an homage to the historical tayū.

      @@Linfamy No, tayū we’re never courtesans. They were always distinguished imperial artisans treasured by even the emperor. They only existed in the Shimabara District in Kyoto, though, since that’s where the emperor and his court were chillin’ for the longest time. Tayū were originally the ones to perform dochū, wear the extravagant hair ornaments, and loads of other stuff, but they never provided sexual services. They also never wore the “cutting board” obi that oiran are usually seen with, instead tying their sashes in a special knot that turns the creases into the kanji for “heart.” They also stained their teeth black and only painted their bottom lips, two things oiran didn’t do. There were of course many more oiran than tayū at any present time, and since they only existed in one city and were depicted so similarly, they came to be known as courtesans even though they weren’t. And there are actually modern tayū in the Shimabara district today. Like Aōi Tada, who trained from just two years and eight months old to be an artisan.

      @@Solar_Axis there are records listing tayu at brothel houses in Yoshiwara. It's pretty well documented they provided sexual services. I recommend checking out Cecilia Seigle's book on Yoshiwara 👍
      I do agree that modern tayu are not courtesans.

      @@Linfamy Quite a few oiran called themselves tayū, which only added to the confusion between the two. Aōi Tada, an actual tayū, explained this personally in an interview she did with Let’s Ask Shogo. A lot of well-respected historians also get it wrong just because they’ve been so muddled together over the centuries

      Yep, I know about that interview 🙂, other viewers have linked it to me before. Respectfully, Aoi Tayu is not a historian. She's great at what she does, but I don't expect her to be familiar with all of the history.
      From what I've seen, tayu were courtesans. But I appreciate you bringing up the subject. Have a good holidays 😁🎉
