What are Liquid funds? Fixed deposits vs liquid funds in Hindi

  • In this video we will discuss what are liquid funds, how much return they provide, are they safe ? Should you prefer them over fixed deposits etc .
In the realm of investments, there are various kinds of funds available for investment. One such fund is liquid funds. There are quite mixed reviews about them. Some claim that they're quite safe to invest in, while others want to stay away from them.
But, what are liquid funds exactly? In this Video, we'll be discussing just that, along with some terminologies and examples associated with them.
Liquid funds are a category of debt funds. They invest your money in short-term financial instruments with a maturity of around 90 days.
As an investor in a liquid fund investment, you can sell your units anytime you want, i.e., there's no prescribed lock-in period in liquid funds. Furthermore, you can easily ask for repayment of your investment before maturity (also known as redemption), and the money transfer is done to your account. Hence, liquid funds don't have any extra load (an amount you pay when you leave a fund scheme), nor do they have any entry load associated with them.

Liquid funds do have risks associated with them, like mutual funds. However, this does not mean you shouldn't even consider investing in them. Consider investing in AAA-rated liquid funds, they may be low rated; but they are safe as compared to other liquid funds. Always remember, there are pros and cons to everything. All you need to do is find a way to extract more pros out of them, rather than the cons.

Have a query about balanced fund: I see most of the balanced funds charges expense ratio more 1.5% or 2% (direct or regular plan), also came to know most of the PMS charges not more than 2% per annul. Can you share some details on this analogy for customer to decide on which one should for lump-sum investment for long term?
    Fund name Expense ratio
ICICI Prudential Balanced Advantage Fund 1.72
DSP Dynamic Asset Allocation Fund - Regular Plan 2.28
IDFC Dynamic Equity Fund - Regular Plan 2.34
    L&T Balanced Advantage Fund 2.43
    HDFC Balanced Advantage Fund 1.62
This comparison is odd but considering safety with balanced fund vs PMS which can give very good returns over long term(minimizes risk) 10-15 years - and charges looks similar - so which one should be beneficial?

    1. Has the today's situation, in any form, affected the nature and the features of the Liquid Funds?
    2. Does it matter if I invest in this fund myself or with the help of an investment company? If yes, how?

I was having a look at the performance of the Top Gilt Mutual Funds & am amazed to see that they have done better than many of the Equity Mutual Funds and as they invest in Govt. Hi Pranjal thanks for the video. It was so well explained. However after watching this video I was comparing FD rates vs Rate of return of liquid funds. 1 year fd return is around 5 to 5.5% in most banks , but 1 year return of a good liquid fund is around 3.3%. So in this scenario FD clearly is a better choice as it has higher return and more safe. Could you please explain this difference.
