Why was the rubber intially treated with sulphur though? Thanks!

Maybe it was pure chance. Then again, most people don’t just have a pot of sulfur laying around…

To make it stronger, it was be chance. They were blending and treating it first. Then it was dropped /spilled on the stove. By chance this was the beginning of vulcanization of rubber. This vulcanization is where it was mixed then cooked to a point of hardness. It made it tougher and more durable. We could now use it for automobiles and industries. Thus why it’s done this way.

back in the 50's some guy made a tire that would last the life of the vehicle Goodyear gave him 1 million dollars for the patient. there are cars NOW that have this feature
