- The JMT isn’t just a trail; it’s a journey through history. Named after the naturalist John Muir, this 211-mile trail stretches from Yosemite Valley to Mount Whitney. Muir’s advocacy for wilderness preservation led to the creation of this breathtaking path, completed in 1938. Traversing diverse landscapes, from lush meadows to alpine peaks, the JMT offers an unparalleled adventure.
For my 2024 John Muir Trail thru-hike, I prioritized both comfort and practicality. My total pack weight, including food and water, came in just over 40 pounds (18 kg). While weight considerations were important, they didn’t dictate every choice I made. I hope this gear list offers you some useful ideas for your own hike.
