I believe The Earthsea Cycle is one of the most beautiful stories I've ever read, and I re-read/listen to the whole series once every couple years. PLEASE don't give up on it, you won't regret sticking with it. Tombs of Atuan is less a standalone story than other books in the series, and more of a hinge/necessary bit to introduce an important character.

I read the entire Earthsea Cycle a couple of years ago and sadly, the bits I like the most were the Afterwords and Forewords that came with my bindup edition (the beautifully illustrated one by Charles Vess). I'm litterally keeping them just because that edition is gorgeous. Fantasy has come a long way since then...

I had a very similar experience with the OUABH series... I got the first one because I liked the B&N's edition and it was like "... this is like a popcorn read. I just turned my brain off and read and got out of a reading slump by completing one book" and then I read all of them and they never got better, though the last one is particularly bad in my opinion. But they are pretty haha

It's funny you say that The Inheritance Games could've been a duology because... it was! I was waiting for book 2 reviews to come out to see if I should pick it up, only to discover that they had turned it into a trilogy after book 1 came out -_-
I can't remember if I DNF'd book 2 or 3, but man did I not care about those books enough to even google and figure out the mystery.

Chaotic and strange is a great way to describe Diana Wynne Jones books. I have her Dark Lord of Derkholm on my tbr. It's a parody of the chosen one trope and capitalism. Someone from our world is transported into a fantasy world, and proceeds to muck it up.

They are among my daughters very favorites 😍.. I have tried to read those and a few others that she likes very much... I'm an old school Tolkien fan and it's hard to read anything remotely close without wanting to spend the time on either Tolkien again, or more Tolkien I haven't quite got to yet....

When I was in college I got into a fight with my artist roommate. A chair throwing punching fight.... Because his paintings used very thick paint.... I told him if he was more decisive he wouldn't have such money problems having to pay for the paint. How thick a painting had to be before it was considered sculpture? For some reason that triggered him.
Now I'm wondering how bad a book has to be, before it's just a piece of cover art?

As a self-declared H.G. Parry fan and Peter Pan connoisseur, will you be reading H.G. Parry’s new Peter Pan novella?👀
I think I had a better time with Rouge than you did, but I broadly agree that Bunny is more tightly written and better executed, even if Rouge deals with more sophisticated topics and themes. Will you be reading All’s Well though, Awad’s Macbeth-All’s Well That Ends Well mashup? 👀

that's a random comment and i hope it doesn't bother you, but i love that you speak with a normal voice and don't make it thinner to sound more agreeable. i'm socially transitioning to appear more masculine but the damn voice has such a grip on me it's annoying, but i started loving seeing women just speak naturally

I have never heard anyone hate on Station Eleven. (I haven't read it). Points for originality. I do think Earthsea is an odd sell now. I really enjoyed The left hand of darkness and would like to read more in the Hainish cycle. I feel like the style of those were very different, but its been awhile since Earthsea.

For decades i couldn't explain why I could never get into Dragonbone chair even waaay back when it first came out. I think it came out when there was this glut of Fantasy that was trying SO hard to be Tolkien-esque ... but different .... There's another series that straight up tries to copy the Tolkien formula by having these hobbit type folks who write a diary about their adventures and then following generations follow the guidance of the diary .. I dunno something like that. Even as a young one who basically read anything sword and sorcery I just couldn't get into it .. much like the Dragonbone chair. But the I couldn't articulate what it was that just couldn't draw me in ... thanks for taking that off my shoulder :P Also ... I cant remember but were you going to read Heroes Die - Stover ... can't remember.

I also read the Once Upon a Broken Heart books because of the covers...I thought they were okay (the last book was a mess though). The world was fun and I liked the main character enough, but the romance, plot, and basically everything else was a bit meh. I fully expected to hate Fourth Wing but found it entertaining if not objectively great. 😆
