Michelle Kuo was a young Harvard graduate who accepted a Teach for America position at an alternative school in a blighted Mississippi Delta town. There, she befriended Patrick, a student whom she would reconnect with years later as he awaits trial on murder charges. In this moving talk, Michelle shares the story of education, failure, criminal justice, and redemption -- the lessons learned from her time spent reading with Patrick.
Michelle Kuo is the author of Reading with Patrick, a memoir of her literary friendship with a student in a small town in the Mississippi Delta. She is a graduate of Harvard Law School and had worked as an immigrants' rights lawyer in the Fruitvale District of Oakland, California. Michelle also clerked for a federal appeals court judge in the Ninth Circuit and has taught courses at San Quentin Prison. She currently teaches courses on race, law, and society at the American University of Paris.
在密西西比陪伴學生派屈克讀書的過程，當地學生間常起衝突，但派屈克不同，他討厭打架，卻也因此不愛上學。郭怡慧親自邀請他上課，帶他寫詩念書。但當郭怡慧離開密西西比、去哈佛念法學院的三年後，竟接獲派屈克因衝突殺人的消息。
探監派屈克，她才知道他輟學，還有了個女兒，更失去用文字正常表達想法的能力。「我們都知道學生可以短時間內進步，卻沒想過他們會退步這麼快。」郭怡慧選擇重新陪伴派屈克讀書，透過書籍帶他了解社會問題、認識自然、學會思考。
「我們是比較幸運的那一群，我們不能漠視自己的能力。要怎麼縮小我和他們之間的差距呢？閱讀是一個方法。」

郭怡慧是在美國出生長大的台灣移民第二代，她在哈佛大學主修社會科學和性別研究；畢業後參與「為美國而教」計畫，於阿肯色州赫勒拿的另類學校擔任兩年英文老師；隨後赴哈佛法學院就讀。法學院學成後，郭怡慧任職於加州非營利機構「拉沙法律諮詢中心」，為西語系國家移民提供法律扶助，處理租屋者與勞工權益相關事宜；也曾擔任美國監獄大學計畫志願教師、法官書記；現任教於巴黎美國大學，教授種族、法律、社會相關課程。
2017年，郭怡慧出版了《陪你讀下去》，該書記錄她與學生派屈克在監獄裡的共讀時光，引領讀者直視偏鄉教育、階級差距、種族歧視等議題，也展現了透過文學跨越社會界限與隔閡的可能。

I'm 15 years old, i relate to this Ted talk since reading has helped me understand a lot of things in life, and has made me think of the way things work myself. Now i understand that if i didn't start reading, my mind would of just stopped thinking about what's really important or what's really happening in my life. If people just started reading or finding what makes them feel connected with their mind the world would be a lot better.
